The sound of knocking echoed as Yang Yin stood at the door for quite some time before it finally creaked open.
Lu Xiaoran stood half inside, his eyes warily fixed on the two people before him. When his gaze landed on Tang Mo, he couldn't help but pause for a moment, thinking to himself: Isn't that the actress Zhang Mi? What is she doing in this shelter?
Just as Lu Xiaoran was lost in thought, Yang Yin stepped forward and addressed him, "You must be Lu Xiaoran. I'm Yang Yin, your new partner. This person here, you should already know, so there's no need for me to introduce her."
Zhang Mi, a popular film and television star, was well-known throughout Dragon Kingdom. Tang Mo had now disguised herself as Zhang Mi, allowing her to seamlessly adopt this false identity in front of Lu Xiaoran.
"I'm Zhang Mi, an actress. It's a pleasure to meet you," Tang Mo said with a smile, nodding at Lu Xiaoran.
"Alright. Now that everyone is acquainted, let’s discuss tomorrow's mission," Yang Yin began, but just as he was about to continue, Lu Xiaoran suddenly interrupted with a furrowed brow. "Wait a minute, Yang Yin. You just said you're my partner. What about my previous partner, Ma Zhibiao? Is he not continuing with me?"
Lu Xiaoran was no fool; he had already sensed the trap hidden in Yang Yin's words. After all, no one had come to inform him about Ma Zhibiao's death yet. He had told Zhang Kaiwen that he and Ma Zhibiao had parted ways at the foot of the mountain. Logically, he shouldn't know anything about Ma Zhibiao's whereabouts afterward.
If he were to accept Yang Yin as his partner without hesitation, it would be like admitting that he knew Ma Zhibiao was dead.
"Your former partner, Ma Zhibiao, was killed on the way back to the shelter," Yang Yin said, looking into Lu Xiaoran's eyes. At that moment, Lu Xiaoran's face was filled with surprise, appearing completely unaware of Ma Zhibiao's fate.
Yang Yin sighed inwardly; it seemed this kid might genuinely have nothing to do with Little Ma's death. During his private conversation with Zhang Kaiwen, he had learned this tactic: propose teaming up with Lu Xiaoran to gauge his reaction.
If Lu Xiaoran said nothing and simply agreed, it indicated that he likely already knew about Ma Zhibiao's death. However, if he raised a question like this, it suggested that he might genuinely be unaware of the situation.
Seeing that Yang Yin had already revealed the news of Ma Zhibiao's death, Lu Xiaoran continued to feign surprise as he said, "Oh... is that so? The former leader mentioned on the broadcast that a companion was harmed outside the shelter. Could it be...?"
Yang Yin nodded at him and explained how they discovered Ma Zhibiao's body.
After listening, Lu Xiaoran put on a sorrowful expression, lowered his head, and spoke softly, "Although I only spent a few days with Ma Zhibiao, I felt we got along quite well. I can't believe he was killed so suddenly, and I have no idea who could have done such a thing."
Seeing Lu Xiaoran's demeanor, Yang Yin's suspicions about him lessened a bit.
The identity of Ma Zhibiao's killer was still unclear. "Tomorrow morning, the three of us should go to the scene and see if we can find any clues," Yang Yin suggested.
Lu Xiaoran nodded seriously and replied, "Then let's go there together tomorrow."
