Chen Li and Shen Qingyue were thrown to the ground by the guards, as casually as if they were two bags of trash. Chen Li rubbed his sore backside, cursing inwardly, Those arrogant fools, just wait until I grow up; I'll make sure each one of you regrets it!
A sharp voice interrupted Chen Li's thoughts. "Oh, isn't this the young master and Young Miss? How pitiful to be thrown on the ground like this."
Chen Li and Shen Qingyue looked up to see a middle-aged man in a brown robe, thin and wiry, approaching them with a broad smile plastered across his face. This man was Zhou Fu, the chief steward of the Wuding Marquisate, who loved to flatter those above him while oppressing those below, taking advantage of the Marquis's power.
"Steward Zhou, what brings you here?" Chen Li forced a smile and nodded at Zhou Fu.
Zhou Fu shot Chen Li a sidelong glance and said in a mocking tone, "This old servant has been ordered to take you two young ones to your accommodations. Are you two dissatisfied with this old servant?"
Shen Qingyue could no longer tolerate Zhou Fu's smug demeanor and was about to retort when Chen Li discreetly tugged at her sleeve.
"Of course not," Chen Li replied with a smile. "Steward Zhou, please lead the way."
Only then did Zhou Fu nod in satisfaction and say, "Follow me. The Marquis has personally assigned you your living quarters; I will take you there now."
As they followed Zhou Fu through several corridors, Chen Li noticed a glint of sinister delight flicker across Zhou Fu's face. He paid it no mind and continued on with Shen Qingyue until they arrived at a secluded courtyard.
Before they even stepped inside, a nauseating stench assaulted their senses, mixed with the sounds of various animals howling, making them feel sick.
Shen Qingyue couldn't help but wrinkle her nose and asked while covering her face, "What is this place? Why does it smell so bad?"
Zhou Fu sneered and pointed at a sign at the entrance of the courtyard. "Take a good look; this is Monster Den. From now on, this will be where you two lowly creatures reside!"
Shen Qingyue focused her gaze on the dilapidated sign that read "Monster Den" in crooked letters, the handwriting messy and exuding an eerie atmosphere.
"What? You want us to live here?" Shen Qingyue asked incredulously. "Isn't this a place for imprisoning beasts? How can we be made to stay in such a place?"
Monster Den was where the Wuding Marquisate kept fierce beasts captive, filled year-round with all sorts of ferocious creatures. Although these beasts were restrained by formations set by Cultivators, there were times when lapses occurred.
There had been several instances where beasts escaped; those low-ranking Cultivators living near Monster Den had often been torn apart by the escaped beasts, leaving no trace behind. Thus, throughout the entire Qian Sheng Empire, Monster Den was considered one of the most terrifying places—no one dared to approach it, let alone live there.
Zhou Fu laughed coldly. "What? Are you two lowly creatures still being picky? The Marquis allowing you to stay here is already an immense favor; don't be ungrateful! At least there's a roof over your heads here; it's better than sleeping on the streets!"
Zhou Fu pushed open the courtyard gate, and a stronger stench of blood and decay rushed out, nearly making Chen Li and Shen Qingyue gag.
Shen Qingyue, suppressing her nausea, glared at Zhou Fu and shouted, "Zhou Fu, you're nothing but a dog! What right do you have to flaunt your power here?"
"What did you say?!" Zhou Fu's expression changed, a flicker of malice flashing in his eyes.
"Shen Qingyue, enough." Chen Li pulled Shen Qingyue back, knowing it wasn't the right time to confront Zhou Fu.
"Let him stay here if he wants," Chen Li said coolly, his tone laced with an icy edge.
Zhou Fu snorted dismissively and turned to leave Monster Den. Watching his retreating figure, a glint of coldness flashed in Chen Li's eyes. He would remember this grudge.
As they stepped into Monster Den, Chen Li and Shen Qingyue found it even worse than they had imagined. The entire yard was overgrown with weeds and in disarray, littered with animal droppings and leftover scraps of food that emitted a foul odor.
Several dilapidated wooden shacks stood crookedly in one corner of the yard, their walls riddled with cracks and the thatched roofs rotting away, threatening to collapse at any moment.
Shen Qingyue covered her nose, fighting the urge to vomit as she looked at Chen Li and asked, "Are we really going to live here?"
Chen Li surveyed the surroundings, his brow furrowed.
"It seems our dear father has gone to great lengths," he scoffed coldly, his voice dripping with sarcasm. He knew that Chen Yuantu had arranged for them to stay at Monster Den not out of kindness. The environment was harsh and fraught with danger.
Their Scumbag Dad clearly intended to let them fend for themselves! Even if they failed, no one could blame him.
"Don't be afraid," Chen Li said softly as he squeezed Shen Qingyue's hand reassuringly. "With me around, no one can hurt you."
Shen Qingyue looked into Chen Li's determined eyes; despite rolling her own eyes dramatically, she felt somewhat reassured inside.
"Okay."
Chen Li led Shen Qingyue into one of the wooden shacks and discovered it was completely empty except for a tattered straw mat on the floor, covered in dust and grime.
Shen Qingyue looked at the shabby house, momentarily at a loss for words.
"Come on, Shen Qingyue," Chen Li said, patting her shoulder. "Once I become successful in my training, I promise to build you the most beautiful house in the world!"
Shen Qingyue couldn't help but chuckle. "You just love to brag."
Chen Li laughed along with her.
As night fell, the Monster Den grew even more terrifying. The roars of various beasts echoed one after another, sounding particularly piercing in the stillness of the night.
Chen Li and Shen Qingyue lay on the cold grass mat, unable to fall asleep no matter how hard they tried.
Chen Li began to circulate the Dragon Tiger Jade Liquid Scripture, greedily absorbing the Spiritual Energy from the surroundings. He could feel that the concentration of Spiritual Energy here was several times stronger than that of the Shen Family.
With each breath he took, the surrounding Spiritual Energy seemed to be drawn in, forming a visible vortex that surged wildly into his body.
Chen Li couldn't help but marvel inwardly; it seemed that the Spiritual Vein beneath the Wuding Marquisate was indeed extraordinary.
Meanwhile, Shen Qingyue also activated the Nine Heavens Divine Phoenix Scripture. A faint golden light enveloped her, and a shadowy Golden Phoenix could be seen soaring behind her, majestic and divine.
The two were immersed in their cultivation, completely oblivious to the passage of time.
Just then, a rustling sound came from outside the house, followed by a shadow silently appearing in the dilapidated courtyard.
Cold eyes glinted in the darkness of night. The figure glanced at the house where the two were staying and said smugly, "The Marquis said as long as I leave you two breathing, it’s fine. Two little beasts? I don’t believe I can’t tame you!"
