Behind the kitchen, there was a curtain. When it was lifted, the first thing that caught the eye was a large courtyard. In the open space of the yard, several oddly shaped ovens were set up, and a group of peculiar spirits were busy preparing various ingredients. 0

These were Mountain Spirits. The expansion of the human race and the chaos of war had destroyed their habitats. They had low bloodlines and had spent many years just to be able to speak. However, it would take them many more years to transform into human forms. 0

Even if I intervened, I could only maintain a human form for a short time, and my appearance would still differ from that of ordinary people. It was difficult for them to survive in this world. Thus, they willingly followed me, and I happened to need helpers. 0

So, these are your Spirit Familiars? 0

Sort of. My contract with them is different from yours; theirs is easier to dissolve. Sang Qingxiao pointed to a room on the other side of the courtyard. You will live there from now on. Go wash up; hot water and clothes have been prepared for you. 0

Misha not only washed up but also gave himself a buzz cut and put on the coarse gray clothes that had been prepared for him. He felt the fabric carefully; it was plain in appearance but extremely comfortable. He didn’t know what material it was made of. Once he was all tidied up and stepped out, the courtyard was still bustling with activity. 0

Sang Qingxiao was sitting on a small stool, munching on a watermelon. Beside her sat a little one who stopped eating when he saw Misha. With hands dripping with watermelon juice, he tugged at Sang Qingxiao's clothing corner, his eyes filled with fear. 0

Seeing the watermelon juice on her clothes, Sang Qingxiao merely smiled and introduced them. This is Buddha Treasure; he is Misha, our chef at the Small Tavern from now on. You should greet him. 0

The little guy hesitated for a long time before finally squeaking out a "hello." 0

He’s saying hello to you, Sang Qingxiao explained to Misha with a smile. He arrived just a day earlier than you; he’ll get used to you in no time. 0

He’s also a spirit? Misha found a stool to sit down on. 0

Yes, he was imprisoned by that Fox Demon from Fragrant Pavilion; he’s just a Little Fox Demon. 0

Sang Qingxiao teased the little fox for a bit, and it relaxed before starting to munch on the watermelon again. 0

Meanwhile, over here, a Mountain Spirit made of stacked stones handed Misha a large bowl filled with food. 0

Misha took the bowl, and the Mountain Spirit pointed at its own chest. 0

Misha leaned in closer to take a look; its clothing was embroidered with intricate patterns that contained characters within them. 0

Xiao Lei? Is that your name? 0

The Mountain Spirit nodded. 0

Misha quickly thanked it, which made it happy as it turned around to continue working. 0

The large bowl was filled with rice covered by various dishes. 0

Shrimp with scrambled eggs featured tender eggs and fresh shrimp that had a delightful bounce. The flavor was light yet satisfying. 0

Fish-flavored shredded pork had a taste profile that combined salty, sweet, sour, spicy, and savory notes without any actual fish meat present; yet it subtly carried the fragrance of fish. The shredded pork was tender while the ingredients added a crisp texture—just like steamed tender fish meat paired with crispy fried fish bones. This dish was perfect for mixing with rice. 0

Dongpo Pork came in two hefty pieces tied with straw crosses. The rich aroma of meat mingled with hints of straw fragrance. Taking a bite released juices all over; although the pieces were large, every strand of meat was infused with flavor—neither greasy nor dry. 0

Even the most unassuming stir-fried vegetables were crisper and greener than before they hit the pan, yet not a hint of bitterness remained, only a fresh sweetness that delighted the palate. Misha praised it without reservation, saying, "I don't have your skills. My one-pot dish can't compare to your Dongpo Pork." 0

"It's just that the ingredients are fresher and the seasoning is a bit more varied. Teach you a few times, and you'll get the hang of it," Sang Qingxiao replied, noticing that Misha had finished eating. He handed Misha a slice of watermelon. "From now on, you can take charge of the kitchen. Just stir-fry some dishes and do a bit of shopping. The Mountain Spirits will help with tasks like washing vegetables, chopping meat, and cleaning up." 0

"I'll occasionally take on some demon-catching jobs, and as my Spirit Familiar, you'll need to assist me. So, your monthly pay will be divided into two parts; it won't be lower than what you earn at Fragrant Pavilion." 0
