"Misha, let's go. We're taking Xiao Tao Rui home."
Sang Qingxiao pulled out the leftover peach and slowly began to eat it, beckoning Misha to come along. Misha hurried to catch up but consciously lagged a step behind this time.
Hearing a grunting sound behind her, Sang Qingxiao turned around and saw the wild boar she had forgotten about. Its beady little eyes were filled with both eagerness and fear.
"Forgot about you, didn't I?" Sang Qingxiao chuckled as she bent down and lightly flicked its forehead, causing the wild boar to vanish from sight.
Upon returning to the Small Tavern, Old Vine's branches unusually burst into the establishment, snatching away Xiao Tao Rui's remains.
Sang Qingxiao sighed and instructed Misha to hang out the closed sign before facing Old Vine alone.
This residence originally belonged to Prince Jing's estate. After the incident with Prince Jing, many properties were put up for sale. However, due to the serious crimes committed by the Sang Family and their extensive implications, initially, no one dared to buy. The prices kept dropping until Zhong Kui managed to snag a great deal.
A grand five-entry mansion! It even came with a large Zheng Garden!
But when Old Vine first entered, it still felt small. After all, it used to roam freely in vast spaces, and now it was confined within a house in Jingjing City; compared to the outside world, this place indeed felt cramped.
Under Old Vine's strong insistence, the five-entry mansion underwent significant renovations.
The first entry was designated for receiving guests; although it was unlikely there would be any visitors, customs dictated that it must remain intact even if empty.
The second entry became Sang Qingxiao's living quarters.
The third and fourth entries saw all buildings demolished, including the large Zheng Garden, which was entirely given to Old Vine.
The fifth entry was where a new Small Tavern was built along with Misha's residence.
Passing through the row of houses where Misha lived led directly into Old Vine's territory.
Old Vine had tidied up the area beautifully; usually, the garden was bustling with activity as various Little Demons clamored for territory. Minor skirmishes were common, and Old Vine often joined in, stirring up excitement everywhere.
However, today the garden was eerily quiet, devoid of any Little Demon presence.
When Sang Qingxiao found Old Vine, it was busy burying a dry peach branch in the ground next to a withered willow branch.
Is there still hope?
A thick vine suddenly lashed out; Sang Qingxiao did not flinch or retreat. The vine ultimately veered off course and struck hard against her feet.
"Where is the hope? It's your failure to protect them!"
Faced with Old Vine's accusations, Sang Qingxiao fell silent for a moment. Once Old Vine's anger had subsided somewhat, she spoke, "Even at the height of the Demon Clan Town Guardian's power, it was impossible to protect every demon. Old Vine, you need to calm down."
"How can I calm down? Xiao Tao Rui was so young! Just the day before, she was still lively, and now, just one night later, how could she be lying there?!"
"Old Vine, you're not the only one hurting. Even if Xiao Tao Rui and Grandma Liu didn't meet the Spirit Familiar standards, I left them similar runes. The moment I sensed something was wrong, I rushed over."
"I am only one person; I can't protect every demon. I've done my best. In this matter, I have no regrets. I avenged her."
"That’s not revenge!" Old Vine interrupted her. "You’re using Xiao Tao Rui’s incident to establish your authority! Look at you, with your Blood Peach Tree and Mountain Moving Talisman; even that broken stone tablet was dragged in to make a show. Now you've gotten what you wanted; everyone in Jingjing City remembers you!"
