Before nightfall, the Steward of the Ming Residence arrived with several large boxes as an apology. Master Xiang reprimanded Mama Chen, and although Old Madam tried to intervene, she was unable to stop it. After this beating, Mama Chen was unable to get out of bed for months.
Sang Qingxiao nodded in acknowledgment and, considering the weight of the gifts, returned a generous amount of food to the Steward. He mentioned that he feared Old Madam might cause further trouble, so the banquet was ultimately canceled.
After the Steward and others left, Sang Qingxiao opened the large boxes. The gifts were quite substantial; it seemed that this biological father of hers truly understood right from wrong. She had previously investigated her biological father and found him to be a capable and responsible man. If it hadn't been for unforeseen circumstances during his travels, he might have chosen to protect Sang Yu Ning just like in the Chi family.
Upon learning of the troubles within the Sang Family, he disregarded his official duties and rushed back to the capital, but he was still a step too late. Over a decade had passed, yet he continued searching for traces of Sang Yu Ning.
In fact, during Sang Yu Ning's pregnancy, he nearly found her but was thwarted once again by Old Madam's interference. The two were separated by life and death, ultimately missing each other.
As a result of this incident, Mingze's relationship with Old Madam had significantly deteriorated. However, out of filial piety, they maintained a facade of harmony. It wasn't until ten years after Sang Yu Ning's departure that Mingze remarried, deliberately choosing someone Old Madam despised. Thus, nearing forty, he finally had a pair of children.
It was said that he doted on them greatly.
Thinking about those two children made Sang Qingxiao feel a bit unsettled. She sat alone in Zheng Garden for quite some time until Old Vine approached her.
"Should I arrange for people from Shanxia Village to come to the capital quickly?"
Sang Qingxiao smiled and replied, "Are you trying to help me vent my anger? We may bicker and argue between ourselves, but when someone bullies us, we must stand united. I can't stand seeing that old servant acting so high and mighty in front of you when clearly you are her superior."
"You've already prepared for dealing with Old Madam's pawns at Ming Residence, haven't you? You've been laying the groundwork for some time now; when will you start taking action?"
"You're right; it's time to take action. Let's arrange for people from Shanxia Village to come to the capital as soon as possible."
Li Cu returned a few days later than expected. Feeling guilty, he asked, "I stayed an extra two days in Ze Province and also checked out Luzhou. I brought you some local specialties; will you be angry that I returned late?"
"Not at all; as long as you're safe," she reassured him.
Relieved, Li Cu leaned against the stove and watched Sang Qingxiao simmer a pot of richly flavored tofu stew with fish offal. Perhaps because he often took on the role of a cat lately, he had developed a particular fondness for fish during this time—even fish offal that Riri usually looked down upon made his mouth water.
There was an abundance of fish stored in Small Tavern, so Sang Qingxiao planned to use some up.
A pot of Fish Offal stew with tofu was simmering, made entirely from large fish's offal. The Fish Roe, larger than a palm, filled the entire belly of the fish, while the Fish Intestines, as thick as a pinky finger, added a rich flavor enhanced by a generous amount of chili peppers. After cooking, a layer of Minced Garlic and mild chili powder was sprinkled on top, followed by a drizzle of Hot Oil that filled the entire kitchen with an enticing aroma. I decided against adding Ying Pepper Powder; the children were becoming more accustomed to spicy food but still couldn't handle the numbing pain of the prickly pepper.
