"Are they all here?" Sang Qingxiao asked Misha.
"Yes, they arrived in the afternoon and even made a point to greet me. They mentioned they would continue delivering dinner and asked for more," Misha replied.
"Then let's send over some freshly made Fish Offal, and prepare a pot of meat as well. It's all spicy dishes to help dispel the dampness from their bodies. It's hot today, so we should also send a cart of watermelons. Do we still have lamb and radish soup? After their long journey, they need to replenish their strength. Remind them to drink soup before eating the spicy food; it’s good for their stomachs."
After arranging the dinner with a flurry of instructions, Sang Qingxiao asked again, "How did they arrive so quickly? Have they finished their tasks?"
"I know this!" Li Cu answered. "It was thanks to the sacrifice of the Black Fish Spirit that they succeeded. Once the runes entered Ze Province, the river's water receded much faster. After burying the ashes, the Wei River's flood also calmed down. Not only Ze Province benefited from this; it seems that its sacrifice has blessed the surrounding areas as well."
Misha nodded in agreement, and Qilang added, "The rain in the south has lessened, and we can even see the sun occasionally during the day."
"Is that considered dying for a cause?" Sang Qingxiao thought but couldn't bring herself to voice her concern for the people of Ze Province who had suffered.
After dinner, the group kept busy.
They searched for fish with thick flesh and few bones, carefully scraping out the fish paste, mixing it with seasonings, eggs, and starch until it was well combined. A portion was squeezed into balls and dropped into boiling water, resulting in a batch of plump and crispy fish balls.
Another portion was steamed, cut into pieces, and placed in an iron pot where it was slowly fried in vegetable oil until all sides turned golden brown. Once done, it tasted delicious right away. Sang Qingxiao preferred it in hot pot or paired with stewed vegetables.
Misha set up another pot of oil to fry smoked fish.
The fish was cut into finger-width pieces and had been marinated since morning. Taking advantage of the strong sunlight, it had been sun-dried for several hours.
When making smoked fish, it didn't matter how many bones there were; once it hit the hot oil, it became golden brown and crispy. The bones would fry up so well that one couldn't distinguish between the fish meat and bones unless tasted carefully.
Once the fish was fried to perfection and still bubbling with oil on its surface, it was quickly immersed in a slightly chilled sauce. The heat caused it to absorb the sauce rapidly; once it changed color and took on flavor, it became a delicious dish perfect for drinking or snacking.
Sang Qingxiao prepared three types of sauces: savory and fragrant, spicy, and sweet-and-sour which the children loved most.
However, as she scanned around, she noticed two little faces eagerly waiting for food were missing.
Usually, whenever something delicious was being prepared, those two little ones would be right there in the backyard waiting for freshly cooked treats.
"What happened today? They just had dinner but are nowhere to be seen," she wondered aloud.
"They're probably with the children," Old Vine answered Sang Qingxiao's question.
"What children?"
As soon as the front door of the house opened, it led directly to Academy Street, and diagonally across was the Royal Kindergarten established by the royal family. Yesterday, the two little ones peeked through the crack of the door and saw a group of children about their age, so they kept pressing their faces against the door to watch.
I had already told them that the other children had gone home, but they still occasionally wanted to take a look. The Royal Kindergarten of the Great Jing Dynasty was originally located within the palace. At first, it only catered to a few princes. To demonstrate his benevolence, Emperor Qin Zhang allowed some children of meritorious officials to enroll as well.
As more and more children joined, the palace could no longer accommodate the noise, so they decided to establish the Royal Kindergarten within the Imperial Academy on Academy Street. Most of the teachers at the Royal Kindergarten were from the Imperial Academy and Qing Teacher, ensuring a strong faculty.
