Qi Xiaomian led Sang Qingxiao as they stood atop a tall building, surveying every corner of Jingjing City. It seemed he could chat about every street and courtyard they looked upon. Sang Qingxiao marveled at his familiarity with the city, to which Qi Xiaomian chuckled, claiming he had merely read through every record from The Office of Censors and had observed each detail of Jingjing City through those accounts.
"Hmph! You little brat, you weren't this talkative when you were with me," Xuande Emperor thought, feeling a twinge of jealousy as he watched them.
Typically, an emperor wouldn't linger outside the palace for too long. Considering the time, and prompted by Cai Zhuo, Xuande Emperor prepared to return. The empress stepped into the elevator first, but halfway down, the elevator suddenly jolted and came to a halt, leaving Chu Yan terrified and screaming.
Xuande Emperor was startled as well but maintained his composure, glaring at the empress in annoyance at her demeanor. Meanwhile, the officials waiting in line for the elevator realized something was wrong. Their reactions grew exaggerated; they shouted their loyalty to the emperor while frantically searching for the stairwell, rushing down one after another and nearly tripping over each other.
Qi Xiaomian jumped down from the elevator entrance and entered the lift to carry Xuande Emperor out. Two Dragon Guards appeared to assist Cai and the empress as they exited. Just as they left the elevator, it suddenly plummeted three floors before coming to a steady stop again.
At that moment, Xuande Emperor's mood mirrored the erratic descent of the elevator; he could barely contain his anger. His face darkened as he ordered, "Investigate thoroughly!"
With no time to summon help from elsewhere, Xuande Emperor assigned part of the Dragon Guards to Qi Xiaomian. Qi Xiaomian infiltrated the underground mechanisms of Sky Tower. In just a short while, one of the Dragon Guards returned with news that was meant to be whispered privately to the emperor.
However, Xuande Emperor waved his hand and commanded loudly, "Speak up! Say it out loud!"
"Your Majesty," came the response, "the mechanism of the elevator was jammed."
"How could it be jammed?!"
Several corpses had surfaced in the water, drifting along the Moat.
"So you mean to say that those corpses are what jammed the mechanism?" Xuande Emperor fumed. "How could there be bodies in the Moat? No one noticed them floating by?"
"Your Majesty," came the reply, "the bodies were not floating on the surface. The Yongxin Marquis sent people to dive into the water and discovered them at the bottom. Based on their state of decay, they have been there for some time, each weighted down with heavy stones. The strong current carried them here slowly; traces of movement from the current were also found at the riverbed."
"Hmph! What a coincidence! Just as I stepped into that elevator, it got jammed by those corpses?" Xuande Emperor refused to believe it was mere chance!
Reflecting on it now still sent chills down his spine.
"Hmph! There will always be schemers trying to harm me!"
"Your Majesty," came another voice, "there are deeper implications that require further investigation. The Yongxin Marquis has already taken Dragon Guards to search along the Moat."
The Xuande Emperor understood that this matter could not be rushed. Considering it was his nephew's affair, he did not impose a deadline for solving the case. Moreover, even without pressure, Qi Xiaomian would do his utmost.
He simply instructed to report any progress at any time before waving his sleeve and returning to the palace.
