After putting on his outer garment, Qi Xiaomian asked, "How did you all end up here?"
Yong Huai replied, "I couldn't get in touch with Qiu Zizai, so I came to help out."
"Qiu Zizai has indeed left traces; I was looking for him too," Qi Xiaomian continued to smile at her. "You brought the whole family along, and it doesn't look like you're here on official business. It seems more like a leisurely trip."
"Did you really bring the Two Little Treasures with you? Aren't they supposed to be in school?"
"Reading thousands of books is not as good as traveling thousands of miles. Besides, Xiao Wen, the Headmaster, agreed to it. He said he could take care of the little ones, but our little treasure is different from other kids; it's still more reassuring to have them close by."
"But what about you? Didn't you go to the border? Why are you back in Yezhou now?" She reminded him, "Just a heads-up: your current popularity has led to some unpleasant gossip in Jingjing City. You might want to delegate some of your work."
Qi Xiaomian shot Sang Qingxiao a glance, thinking to himself that it was all because of her. The Riverbed Corpse Case had her fingerprints all over it, and fearing others would uncover the truth, he had to participate fully and even made a special trip to the border.
Hiding his true thoughts, Qi Xiaomian said, "I was responsible for the Sunken Corpses case from the beginning and should see it through to the end. As for Yezhou, I just happened to pass by; I couldn't ignore it. So I submitted a memorial to the Court, and His Majesty's decree allowed me to investigate while I was at it. Once this matter is settled, I do plan to take a break."
"As long as you're aware of that," Sang Qingxiao smiled and asked again, "Is that prescription really from Consort Lin?"
Qi Xiaomian raised an eyebrow in surprise at her question but noted that her expression didn't seem like she was fishing for information; she genuinely appeared unaware.
"I thought you knew everything."
Sang Qingxiao shook her head. "You have to tell me!"
"The matter concerning the Sun Family differs from what the Court has publicly stated. Sun Chuan Sheng was poisoned by Consort Lin. Evidence of treason was found in his residence, which infuriated His Majesty since he had already died; thus, it was posthumously condemned, leading to the public statement we have."
"After poisoning Sun Chuan Sheng, Consort Lin also took poison herself. Our people managed to save her, but her throat was damaged; she couldn't write or respond during questioning. While she still had breath left, she was subjected to Lingchi on the street."
"So we still don't know who wrote that malicious prescription."
"When I was at the Sun residence, I focused on investigating this matter but found no leads whatsoever. Although there are many oddities surrounding this case, we can only set it aside for now."
Behind the screen, Qi Xiaomian changed into a set of casual clothes and asked, "Are you coming with me for a stroll?"
"Shouldn't you be resting? Qilang and Qi Shuo will blame me."
"They wouldn't dare."
As soon as Qi Xiaomian opened the door, Qi Shuo blocked his way. "Sir, your injuries haven't healed yet; you should—"
"The injuries may look severe, but it's all due to Evil Spirits. Old Vine is an expert in this area; after removing the demonic energy, my condition has improved significantly. You don't need to be so cautious. If you're still worried, just come along."
After confirming with Sang Qingxiao, Qi Shuo finally stepped aside and let him pass.
The streets of Yuntie County were not desolate or filled with fear despite the nearby Yezhou Great Fire. Instead, news of the event drew many people to the area, and nearly all the inns in the county town were fully booked. The sudden influx of visitors also prompted vendors throughout the town to come out in droves.
The term "bustling" hardly captured the state of the streets in Yuntie County. People were packed tightly together, and Qi Xiaomian stayed close to Sang Qingxiao, who even found time to buy her a few unique snacks from the south.
