With the appearance of Ouyang Jun, the laughter in the fire changed. It spoke human words, repeatedly uttering the name Ouyang Jun, each time in a different voice.
Sang Qingxiao listened carefully and had already heard over thirty distinct voices. A certain suspicion began to surface in her mind; though it was merely a guess, her mood started to grow heavier.
The Great Fire had surged to the city gate but was kept at bay by her runes, frozen in place and too afraid to approach. After bouncing back and forth several times, the voices repeating the name faded away, replaced by a low murmur of discussion.
Seeing that Sang Qingxiao's runes were so effective and knowing that others would not let him go, Ouyang Jun decided to pull Liang Shangshan along with him as they charged towards the area protected by the runes.
Li Cu lightly lifted a foot and kicked him back, then casually supported Liang Shangshan. Liang Shangshan was not worried that the Qi Family would let Ouyang Jun escape; instead, he took the opportunity to stand in the cool shade at the front row to watch more clearly.
"Hand him over, and we won't burn you."
The many voices of the Great Fire quickly reached an agreement, one word at a time, making their promises known.
"Why do you want to kill him?" Sang Qingxiao asked.
"He’s bad! A bad person!"
"You almost wiped out the entire Ouyang Family. Were they all bad people too?"
"Bad! Bad! Especially bad!"
"What about those families that were friendly with the Ouyang Family? Are they bad people as well?"
"Bad! All bad! Anyone who helps them is bad!"
"And what about the common people in this city? Have you ever harmed them by mistake?"
"Not sure. Let them escape; many got away."
At this point, Sang Qingxiao sighed. "Were you all once human?"
"They all say I’m a good child."
"My father always hits me and says I'm naughty."
"My friends think I'm very smart."
"My mother says I'm silly."
"My mother loves me."
The children eagerly answered, their responses innocent, amusing, and lively. Sang Qingxiao seemed to see them as they once were, playing and laughing with family and friends.
Misha had unknowingly begun to tear up, softly chanting the Sutra. The Great Fire, hearing the Sutra, gradually quieted down.
"How many little friends are there?"
"I don't know, so many! Some just disappeared while playing."
Sang Qingxiao held out a handful of candy, spreading it in her palm. "Delicious candy! Do you want some? Line up one by one, and I'll share it with you."
She wanted to count their numbers while also catching a glimpse of their memories.
"Candy! Candy! It's been so long since we've had candy!"
The Great Fire jumped joyfully a few times, sending little flames darting toward Sang Qingxiao.
But a voice stopped them.
"Are you silly? She's a Demon Catcher! The candy is just bait to lure you in."
