Facing the ghosts, Sang Qingxiao found that her talismans were not as effective as Misha's Buddhist spells. The moment Misha made her move, the ghosts showed both respect and fear. Some bolder ones, unable to resist their curiosity, approached Misha, drawn to the aura of virtue emanating from her prayer beads. They leaned in, eagerly touching and absorbing the energy, their faces blissfully intoxicated, likely fantasizing about being reborn into a better life.
However, there were too many wandering souls in the world for the Underworld to attend to them all.
Want to be reincarnated? Not only was there a long queue of spirits in the Underworld, but as they continued to drift aimlessly, it was uncertain whether they would ever be remembered by it.
With the ghosts entrusted to Misha, the fog was no longer an obstacle. The group walked through the mist toward the large mansion.
As they approached, they could hear clear voices reading aloud. Getting closer, they discerned not just the reading but also unmasked sobs and resentment woven into the words.
There are three obediences for a wife: before marriage, she obeys her father; after marriage, she obeys her husband; if her husband dies, she obeys her son. If a wife is not virtuous, she cannot manage her husband; if a husband is not virtuous, he cannot manage his wife. Therefore, self-cultivation is best achieved through respect, and avoiding conflict is best achieved through compliance. Thus it is said: the path of respect and compliance is the greatest courtesy of a husband.
There are four qualities of a husband: first is virtue; second is speech; third is appearance; fourth is conduct. A wife should not expect her husband's virtue to be extraordinary; his speech need not be eloquent; his appearance need not be handsome; and his conduct need not surpass others.
Sang Qingxiao shook her head and laughed. "Is it those women who disappeared from the building? They seem to know how to have fun."
Old Vine replied, "Reading is secondary; take a look further inside."
Sang Qingxiao continued walking while asking, "How did those women get here?"
"They were brought over by that wildflower," Old Vine said.
"Quite fast indeed," she remarked.
"Of course! Unlike you slowpokes," Old Vine retorted.
Sang Qingxiao scoffed back, "Look at them compared to you! That wildflower has better talent than you do. In just over ten years as a husband, it managed to bring so many women here in such a short time."
Having grown accustomed to their banter, Old Vine wasn't offended. He smugly replied, "I focus on living long. I've outlasted many who were stronger than me over these years. Sang Qingxiao, once I outlive you, my life will still stretch on endlessly!"
Tsk! How lonely it must be without anyone to bicker with.
"Hmph! As if I care!"
Upon entering the mansion, Sang Qingxiao chose to conceal herself and observe from the shadows.
The women still appeared disheveled and emaciated but wore bright smiles as they managed the men in the courtyard.
Sang Qingxiao matched the men's appearances with those identified by the Shadow Guard and confirmed one by one that they were indeed all scoundrels.
The reason the men could not resist was due to the suppression of Wildflower and Demonic Nature. Each of them was dressed as a woman, their clothes seemingly stripped from corpses, ill-fitting and particularly uncomfortable, especially the shoes. With their large feet, they had to squeeze into shoes that were tightly wrapped to fit, forcing them to walk gracefully like women, with their skirts remaining still and their postures upright. It was truly a hardship for them.
After the recitation ended, the men were taken away in batches. Some learned to sit properly, others practiced spinning and weaving, some were taught how to dress like women, while others learned embroidery and cooking. Any slight mistake was met with merciless punishment from the women wielding whips, rulers, and rods. The men bore various wounds on their bodies, left untreated and allowed to fester and rot.
Having observed enough, Sang Qingxiao revealed herself alone. The people in the courtyard did not panic at her sudden appearance. The men perhaps thought she was one of the women in the courtyard; Wildflower likely felt emboldened by her naivety, unaware of what fear truly meant.
