Li Cu sighed, knowing it was of no use. Sang Qingxiao smiled, glancing in the direction of Chastity Tower, casually sipping her tea.
Li Cu then asked, "What about Qi Xiaomian? He hasn't been around this morning. It's like he's as busy as Huzhou."
"He went to help me with something," Sang Qingxiao replied.
"Huh? Oh, you told him yesterday to take care of that matter, right?"
Sang Qingxiao nodded.
"He's quick to act. It's just that you have a lot of influence," Li Cu said, leaning closer to Sang Qingxiao. "Xiaoxiao, don’t be fooled by his polite demeanor; he can be quite ruthless behind the scenes."
"You followed him and saw something?"
Li Cu shivered at the thought. "I once went to the Supervisory Office to watch him interrogate a prisoner out of curiosity, and I ended up scaring myself."
"The person he was then was completely different from the one in front of you. In that sea of blood in the prison, he was like a Demon King."
"Those days, he must have sensed my presence but said nothing, letting me observe."
Li Cu huffed, "I suspect he did it on purpose to scare me!"
"Well, if he did scare you, it's your own fault. That kind of place has too many secrets; ordinary people shouldn’t get too close. If it were anyone else, they would have been dead by now. Li Cu, he has the ability to kill you; he just needs to take some risks."
Li Cu pouted. "Xiaoxiao, you're defending him."
"Just speaking the truth. Although Old Vine enjoys prying into people's privacy, he also knows how to keep his distance. You shouldn't just learn from him how to spy; you should also grasp the essence of his methods."
"In places like The Office of Censors, he would never approach recklessly."
"Hmph! I guess I brought this upon myself."
Sang Qingxiao pinched her little nose playfully. "Why are you so temperamental? Look at you getting all worked up over something that happened a while ago."
"I'm just worried about you. His mood swings are hard to read. Lately, it seems like your relationship has grown closer; I'm concerned he might take advantage of you."
Sang Qingxiao laughed. "Am I really that easy to manipulate?"
"Who knows? There are plenty of stories in plays where women throw caution to the wind for love."
"Why are we even talking about love?" Sang Qingxiao said with a mix of amusement and exasperation. "It's not like that; we’re just helping each other out. I have my own mission and burdens to bear; I must remain vigilant at all times."
"Besides," she added, "I have you all reminding me. In my heart, you matter much more than he does. I will take your words seriously."
After handling the matters with those men, Qi Xiaomian returned, bringing along Xiao Ye, whom Sang Qingxiao had specifically instructed him to take care of.
Xiao Ye hung its head low, looking utterly dejected. It didn't even bother to perform the wiggling dance that Riri loved so much. Its mood had shifted from happy to sad—very sad! What happened to you? You look so pitiful.
The people had already been sent away. Qi Xiaomian first explained the situation before adding, "I didn’t provoke it; it’s just been weaned off and is feeling heartbroken."
Its nurses, Yiyi among them, reluctantly bid farewell one by one, their farewells lengthy. "I could have come back sooner; all the time wasted was spent on goodbyes."
Sang Qingxiao gently stroked its little petals, and it remained still, resigned to its fate.
Can it talk? It resembled a child just learning to speak, able to utter only a few words. When the women in the building communicated with it, they mostly observed its swaying patterns. The more they interacted, the better they could guess what it meant.
Qi Xiaomian remarked again, somewhat exasperated, "They even taught me how to read Xiao Ye's swaying frequency and praised me for picking it up quickly."
