The officials nodded in agreement; this method was good. Not only did they manage themselves, but they also didn't require the government to spend money, which everyone found acceptable.
The woman continued, "We have one more request, my lord. Most of us here have children, and many of us do not know how they are faring. We would appreciate it if you could help us investigate their well-being. If they are doing well, we will send our blessings and not interfere. However, if they are being mistreated, we ask that you take charge and allow us to raise them."
This posed a bit of a challenge. The woman went on, "We understand that this matter is difficult. However, as their relatives, we feel a sense of guilt for not caring for them. Although we have learned a little about their situation from the brief words in family letters, we still have doubts about what our family members said when they heartlessly sent us to the Chastity Tower."
"Therefore, we ask you to help investigate; the truth is the most reliable. If the children are doing well, we will naturally be happy for them. If they are not, it pains a mother's heart. Since they are not being treated well, we will take them in and care for them. What objection could those in our husbands' families possibly have?"
"The officials will do their best to assist, and the deities are always watching over you. They see your every action and know that you are good people; they will continue to bless you."
Her words expressed her suffering while subtly hinting at divine attention. Though her tone was soft, the underlying threat was evident; she clearly had backing.
Thunder rumbled through the city all night long. Regardless of whether the officials believed it or not, as long as the majority of the common people did, it would be difficult to evade responsibility under such scrutiny.
Moreover, their request was reasonable; although it was somewhat troublesome, it wasn't impossible to handle under authority.
After some thought, the Prefect reluctantly agreed. He arranged for temporary housing for the women and dispersed the crowd that had gathered to watch. He also instructed his subordinates to collect money from the women's husbands' families and investigate matters further.
Finally, he ordered that the ruins of the Chastity Tower be cleared away. Once everything was settled, he planned to build a Goddess Temple on the site so that daily offerings could be made there. It would present a proper image; whether or not heaven noticed was uncertain, but it would certainly be seen by the people.
After everyone returned home, they were astonished to find that the shattered Buddhist statues had miraculously reassembled themselves, though cracks remained visible. Those who had harbored doubts could not help but believe after witnessing this scene.
In an instant, the scent of sandalwood filled every household, and the sounds of chanting and prayers echoed continuously.
At the same time, the Government moved swiftly, presenting the situation of each family's children before the women. At such a time, no one dared to deceive; the women believed what they saw. The Government even arranged for the children to meet with the women.
When asked for their opinions, only a few children expressed a willingness to be raised by their Kissing Relatives. There were also those who had grown up but felt like strangers to one another; even after spending half an hour together in the same room, they could not shake off their sense of unfamiliarity.
However, it was fortunate that ancient customs valued filial piety. The children all stated that they would care for the women when they grew old. Though they said this, whether they would actually follow through in the future remained uncertain.
