"Hurry up!"
The old man grumbled, "I only have two legs, unlike you with your four hooves. Why are you being so stingy? It's a critical moment; what's wrong with you carrying me for once?"
"Don't you have a carriage?"
"You scared me with your words, and I didn't even think about it."
"That wasn't meant to scare you; I was just trying to help you earn some credit, and you're not even grateful."
"You ride in a carriage every day; how could you forget about it? I think you're just waiting for an opportunity to show off by having me carry you! Hmph, old man, how flattering!"
Mingze let out a helpless laugh; he truly felt wronged. There was no way he would dare sit on the back of the Black General. The moment he heard that the Emperor was in trouble, his body moved faster than his mind. He rushed out in his home clothes, losing one of his shoes in the process.
Fortunately, after decades of hard work, he had a house relatively close to the palace. Otherwise, if he had run all this way and collapsed halfway, it would have been a real injustice without even earning any credit.
Breathing heavily, Mingze nearly gasped for air several times, but no matter how difficult it became, he couldn't stop. From a distance, he saw the guards at the palace gate forming a blockade. Thankfully, there was no fighting.
Li Cu opened the way for him. Once inside, he recognized familiar faces all around. Mingze instructed the leader among them to open the gate.
To his surprise, they hesitated and doubted him.
Mingze grew angry. He pulled out a pen from his pocket and then took out a thin booklet. He struck the other person's head with the pen in frustration and then slapped the booklet against their chest.
"How dare you doubt my identity! Do you want me to expose all your family's secrets right here in public?"
Seeing the other person frown without responding only fueled his irritation.
Mingze began recounting stories from when they were children. After mentioning just two incidents, the other person couldn't hold back anymore. "Minister Ming, I believe you! I believe you! Just keep your mouth shut!"
"Tsk, that was quick to give in! I was planning to write something publicly to prove my identity. Your old man loves collecting my calligraphy; he's trained you well enough that you can discern authenticity better than I can. Do I really need to write more to prove who I am?"
"Uh, how about you write a few more lines?"
Before he could finish speaking, another few knocks landed on his head.
"Don't you see what time it is? You're still trying to be clever with me? If I casually give my writing to your family, do you think they'll praise you for it?"
"The intruders have entered the palace; this is serious! If we delay any longer and they succeed, none of your family will survive!"
"What are we waiting for? Open the door!"
Yet the other person remained cautious. "Minister Ming, if you can prove your identity, I'll let you in. But them..."
"I'll vouch for their identities! If anything happens because of them, I'll take full responsibility; it won't implicate any of you!"
Finally, they were allowed to leave. Sang Qingxiao placed a swift travel talisman on Mingze, who was drenched in sweat and nearly had weak legs. Mingze praised it enthusiastically.
Sang Qingxiao looked at his almost exhausted state and couldn't help but say, "Even if we didn't take the carriage, being surrounded by familiar officials, it would have been quicker to take a moment to knock on a door and borrow one than relying on your two legs."
Mingze slapped his forehead in realization. "Why didn't I think of that!"
Sang Qingxiao cast a reproachful glance at Li Cu, who communicated with her telepathically. "When I went to find him, I saw him holding his little daughter, laughing and coaxing her endlessly. It made me uncomfortable; I felt frustrated for you. Then, emotions got the better of me."
"I knew you were doing it on purpose. I even applauded you for teasing Riri, but this is no ordinary day; how can we be reckless!"
