"What? Worried about me? A scolding won't make me lose any weight. If I stay in the palace too long, my father will definitely come to fetch me back. It won't be long before he follows me into the palace and pulls me out."
At this point, Qi Xiaomian chuckled, her words laced with a clear sense of familiarity. It was amusing how she managed to obtain a golden token for entering the palace from the Empress Dowager. Interestingly, when the Emperor found out, he didn't take it back.
Huo Shu was someone who knew his limits; he let her have her fun. After all, he wouldn't harm us. Having an elder in the family is like having a treasure; at critical moments, they might unexpectedly lend us a hand.
He said as much himself, and then whispered to me that there was a big secret in the palace. When I pressed him for details, he mysteriously refused to tell me.
A big secret, huh? Sang Bai Jue seemed to have discussed it secretly with a few brothers. I couldn't eavesdrop thoroughly, and Sang Qingxiao wasn't particularly interested either. We should focus on the matters at hand first.
Chu Huan was taken into the Office of Censors and wasn't released until dawn when someone from the Chu Family came to pick him up.
Sang Qingxiao peered out from the Small Tavern to see the commotion. After just one night, she looked completely worn out, her face streaked with tears and snot not yet cleaned up. Her eyes were wide with fear; as soon as she stepped out of the Office of Censors, she leaned against the wall and vomited uncontrollably.
Qi Xiaomian had indeed been called away for a scolding. Huo Qi was deeply pained by this and almost rushed into the palace right after her, successfully bringing their son back home.
Once back at the Small Tavern, he couldn't stop badmouthing the Xuande Emperor. Every time he spoke ill of him, he had to praise himself a few times. Qi Xiaomian listened with a smile, not bothering to refute him.
Huo Qi stole glances at Qi Xiaomian's expression; as he continued speaking, his tone couldn't hide his smugness.
"I plan to stay at the academy occasionally," Sang Qingxiao announced during breakfast.
The Imperial Academy was vast with many buildings, but only students from prominent families lived there full-time. Other students returned home after classes and only stayed briefly around exam periods.
"What excuse will you use?" Qi Xiaomian asked. "Do you need me to put in a word for you with the Wen Family?"
Finding an excuse wasn't hard; I could say my studies were falling behind. Although His Majesty claimed not to care about my grades, since he was considering my situation like this, I couldn't afford to do poorly either. I had to at least pass all my subjects.
"Are you sure?" Qi Xiaomian questioned. "For music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, you can only manage chess."
Sang Qingxiao knew better; these subjects were extracurricular. The academy's requirements for girls weren't that strict. Besides music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, there were also embroidery, cooking, and archery—students could choose any three.
Li Cu frowned. "Do I have to pass all of them too? For extracurriculars, I can only do archery."
"Having more opportunities to learn isn't a bad thing; just do what you can," Sang Qingxiao reassured Li Cu.
After comforting Li Cu, Sang Qingxiao reached out to Qi Xiaomian. "Have you finished your assignments?"
Qi Xiaomian helplessly placed her booklet in front of her. Sang Qingxiao opened it and smiled in delight—it was written in my handwriting!
"With this little bit of work, you could have done it yourself."
"There's so much to do, where did the time go? I'm so tired from classes every day, and I still have to deal with things at the Small Tavern when I get back."
"Can you imagine how tired I am? I'm reviewing criminals while also doing your assignments."
Sang Qingxiao's small face twitched, and Qi Xiaomian stopped talking.
"Who caused all this trouble?"
"Isn't it just what you wanted?"
"Well, you were the one who stirred it up."
