Wen Zhaojun blushed and said, "I'm sorry for making you worry."
It shouldn't be you apologizing; who could have imagined that such a large group would leave the Imperial Academy at night without being noticed? They looked so familiar with it; this couldn't be their first time. If they keep getting away with it, something must be off.
If they want to cause trouble, let them. Why do you have to follow them? Don't let them drag you down.
Wen Zhaojun sighed, "We're classmates; I can't just stand by and watch them make mistakes. Besides, my grandfather is the Steward of the Imperial Academy. If they get into trouble, he won't escape unscathed either. It's not easy to maintain the Wen family's good reputation for a hundred years."
"Then you should report this matter," someone suggested. "It's better than putting yourself at risk alone."
Wen Zhaojun replied, "I need to find out the facts first; they might not be doing anything wrong. It’s easy for me to say something, but often that one statement could ruin their future. It’s not easy for them to get into this place."
"And how long do you plan to investigate?" another asked. "By the time you find out the truth, they might have already made a huge mistake with no way back. If you stop them now, maybe you can save them."
Wen Zhaojun looked troubled. "I know all these things too, but it seems like no matter what choice I make, it's wrong."
At that moment, Sang Qingxiao yawned and said, "It's getting late. If you can't figure it out now, think about it tomorrow." She grabbed Wen Zhaojun by the collar and led her back to the dormitory. Under Wen Zhaojun's watchful gaze, she entered her room, closed the door, and went to sleep.
The next day in class, Wen Zhaojun walked to the back row and squeezed in beside her friends at a desk.
Lian Baoying whispered, "What's going on? The classmate I introduced to you yesterday wasn't there." She added, "That person is a diligent student; she's not like us who are just passing time."
"If we spend too much time together and she falls behind a bit, her family will blame us for leading her astray."
Sang Qingxiao said mysteriously, "Well, we happened to learn the same secret."
Lian Baoying was intrigued and insisted on knowing more. "Aren't you still suspicious? You thought I saw someone leaving was a mistake."
"Last night, the three of us saw it with our own eyes—a group of people came out from the secret passage of the Boys' Academy and left the Imperial Academy."
"Really?" Lian Baoying asked in disbelief.
Sang Qingxiao nodded. "We even followed them out."
After hearing this, Lian Baoying regretted not staying with them in the dormitory and began planning how to convince her family to let her stay at the Imperial Academy for adventure games.
"Where is this secret passage?" she asked eagerly.
"It's on the east side of the Storage Courtyard, under an abandoned stove. It's spacious enough for three people to walk side by side comfortably. I also observed some signs of activity in there; many people have been coming and going—not just pedestrians but also someone moving things recently. The wheel marks on the ground are quite clear."
Lian Baoying slammed her hand on the table. "What are the guards at the academy doing? They can't even keep an eye on a few weak students! If my father finds out about this, he'll definitely drag them onto the battlefield for some training."
"The monthly salary is several times higher than that of Border Soldiers! They live well without any danger; with such a cushy job, why aren't they doing their best? A bunch of good-for-nothings! They should just give their positions up to my father's disabled soldiers—those missing arms or legs are better than them!"
Lian Baoying continued ranting about Border Soldiers for almost half of the class before finally expressing her frustration: "This year's Military Pay is delayed again—it's late every year and less every year! The Court keeps saying there's no money, but no matter how tough it gets, we can't let our Warriors suffer!"
