The wind and rain were brewing, and the Left Minister's Residence appeared calm on the surface, but tension lurked beneath. Especially around Shi Yuan, Cui Lan had orchestrated a series of harmless little accidents. She knew her chances of success were slim, so she made no effort to hide her actions. Each time Shi Yuan avoided her traps, she would appear at just the right moment, flashing him a knowing smile.
Shi Yuan didn’t think much of this blatant provocation; he merely regarded it as a minor seasoning in life. However, Shi Yun reacted more strongly, as this had crossed his bottom line, even leading him to contemplate divorce.
As Cui Lan grew increasingly outrageous, Shi Yun decided it was time to pay the Cui family a visit. He had already sent an invitation but received no response. Then one early morning, when winter daylight was slow to arrive and the Left Minister's Residence was still shrouded in darkness, a woman's piercing scream suddenly echoed down the street.
After the scream came uncontrollable sobbing. Before Shi Yuan could finish dressing, a disheveled woman burst into the room. What kind of scene was this?
Shi Yuan continued to adjust his clothes while scrutinizing the intruding Cui Lan. She spoke in a daze, "My Yang'er is dead!"
Shi Yuan didn’t grasp her meaning at first, but taking her words literally left him incredulous. He tentatively replied, "My little uncle? Didn’t he die long ago? I even paid my respects on the day we visited the ancestral hall."
Dead? Was she wishing for his early demise just to clear a space for herself?
Shi Yuan helplessly reminded her, "Your son died four years ago. At that time, I hadn’t even arrived in Jingjing City and didn’t know about your relationship with Shi Yun."
"If only you had never come to Jingjing City," she lamented. "If you hadn’t come, that place in the Suburbs of the Capital wouldn’t have been unearthed, and Yang'er would still be playing happily there. If you hadn’t come, that old fool Shi Yun wouldn’t have given all his properties to you. Yang'er became jealous and lost his place to stay; that’s why he impulsively came to the city and met his end in a lonely alley."
"Now look! My son is truly dead! Why should you, the root cause of all this misfortune, still be alive?"
Cui Lan's expression shifted from sorrowful to frenzied as she suddenly pulled out a dagger that glinted with a chilling blue light at its tip—poisoned!
This time was different; it wasn’t just a game anymore. This madwoman truly intended to kill him. Her determination was evident in her desperate and fierce gaze. Could it be that Shi Dingyang really was dead?
Shi Yuan jumped out of the window to escape. Cui Lan's guards had likely received orders not to act against him but instead surrounded him to prevent his escape while allowing Cui Lan to exact her revenge.
At that critical moment, Shi Yun finally arrived.
However, Shi Yuan shouted for him to stay back; "Her dagger is poisoned!"
Upon hearing this, Shi Yun was even less inclined to retreat. The guards from both families clashed violently, creating utter chaos. Fortunately, they dared not harm their masters as Shi Yun struggled through the fray until he reached Shi Yuan's side.
"Cui Lan! What on earth are you going crazy about?"
Cui Lan seemed to still hold some hope for Shi Yun, helplessly shouting, "Yang'er is dead! Our Yang'er is dead!"
Hadn't he already...
I had taken him out of the prison. For these past few years, he had lived alone in the deep mountains. One day, he came to the city to find me. When I received the news and went to see him, I discovered he had died in an empty alley. I hadn't even had the chance to truly look at him, and those despicable hounds from The Office of Censors had already carried him away!
