As they spoke, Sang Qingxiao remarked, "I have also searched privately using a high-level rune that I had never handled before, but this time, there was no response at all. Everyone fell silent for a moment.
Old Vine asked, "Should we continue searching? We've expended so much energy; it might all be in vain. Xiaoxiao, we still have things to do."
"Continue! I'm even more curious about the Mirror Demon now."
The next morning, Old Vine went to see Lao Lu. Sang Qingxiao quietly followed him to a house where he found Lao Lu sleeping soundly.
Lao Lu had once been a member of the Sang Family Army. He had retired before the Sang Family's downfall due to losing a hand, nine toes, and his manhood. After returning to Jingjing City, he took a job as a night watchman to make ends meet. Fortunately, the Sang Family Army provided substantial support for disabled soldiers, allowing Lao Lu to live quite comfortably without needing to be overly frugal.
Eager for answers, Old Vine used a vine to wake him up. When Lao Lu opened his eyes and saw Old Vine, there was little surprise in his gaze. "You’re here for the Zheng Family?"
"Did you do it?"
Lao Lu laughed hoarsely; his physical condition made his laughter sound strange. "I wish I had! Did you come just to question me?"
Old Vine did not answer directly. "The Zheng Family's emergence disrupted our plans."
Lao Lu shrugged. "So what if it disrupted them? I'm getting impatient. Since we've started down this path, let me continue."
Old Vine cautioned him, "We need to find out if that illegitimate son died by accident first."
Lao Lu complained loudly, "Why is it so complicated? You educated folks always overthink everything, hoping for absolute certainty in everything. But in this world, how can there be such guarantees?"
"If we fail, it's just a life lost. My worthless life—if I die, I die; I'm not afraid of it and won't betray you. You all are more cautious than I am!"
Old Vine couldn't help but try to steady him again. "Didn't you say you wanted to kill off the entire Zheng Family? With all that bravado, if you get caught before taking down a few of them, how will you avenge yourself? Besides, there are still people behind the Zheng Family; don’t you want to keep killing?"
"Are you here just to stop me?" Lao Lu said impatiently. "Then stop talking and close the door when you leave. I've been on guard all night and I'm tired."
"What's with your attitude?"
"You won’t let me act? Then I might as well keep sleeping; being awake just leads to overthinking and makes me restless."
With that remark, Lao Lu turned away and fell back asleep with a loud snore. Old Vine had no choice but to leave, while Sang Qingxiao remained hidden and observed for over an hour.
He really did fall asleep.
Something feels off. How can someone who constantly cries for revenge sleep so soundly when they see their enemy's family in turmoil?
After returning to the Small Tavern, Sang Qingxiao instructed Old Vine to keep a close watch.
"Xiaoxiao, Lao Lu's gaze is unsettling," Old Vine remarked.
Sang Qingxiao, standing at a distance, couldn't see it and listened as Old Vine continued his analysis.
Though I hadn't seen Lao Lu many times, his eyes always conveyed madness, urgency, and the obedience of a soldier. Today, however, his expression was eerily calm, showing determination and wisdom.
Old Vine noted that Lao Lu's situation matched the Mirror Demon’s criteria for selecting candidates. He was fearless, willing to trade his life for revenge; he would undoubtedly be willing to do so.
I tried using a rune on him at that moment, but there was no response. Ha! Facing the Mirror Demon, I felt a sense of defeat for the first time.
