After making up his mind, Zheng Moru quickly wrote to the emperor, who responded just as swiftly, showing concern by sending a few guards. While it appeared to be protection, in reality, it was surveillance, perhaps even an attempt to replace him.

The deaths started from those closest to the marquisate, and as the number of fatalities increased, even if they were deemed accidents upon investigation, they still raised suspicions in the eyes of the Government.

The people of the Capital of Jingzhao were left bewildered. The Ministry of Justice thought there might be a plot by Li Ke and cheerfully intervened only to find themselves in a difficult situation. Qi Xiaomian assigned extra tasks to The Office of Censors; even when the Court pointed fingers at him, he had reasonable grounds to deflect blame.
The emperor was furious about this matter and set a deadline for solving the case. He asked about it daily with an increasingly urgent and disappointed tone that left those investigating feeling cold inside. This thankless case would yield no credit even if the truth emerged after some time; they simply hoped to avoid blame.
The common people could not tolerate misfortunes befalling heroes and took it upon themselves to monitor the situation around the marquisate.
In just a couple of days of persistent vigilance, they witnessed a scene they would never forget for the rest of their lives.
One night, on the streets near the marquisate, a group suddenly appeared—indistinct figures dressed in white, numerous and organized, creating an imposing presence.
Were they ghosts?
The hidden citizens had never seen ghosts before but were convinced that this was indeed a group of spirits. From their vague attire, it could be inferred that they were all souls of Warriors.
For a moment, they didn’t know whether to be afraid or not.
The ghosts continued forward and turned a corner to face the Loyalty and Righteousness Marquisate. They stood before it, raising weapons and shouting something; however, being ghosts meant they could not produce sound—only their apparent anger was visible.
Then they saw the leader mount his horse and leap into the air toward the marquisate's plaque. He swung his weapon down heavily, splitting the plaque cleanly in two.
After smashing the plaque, seemingly still unsatisfied, he led his troops directly through the tightly shut gates. What transpired inside remained unknown; outside, cries for help echoed throughout the night.
When morning came and someone rushed over to take a look, they found that those inside were very much alive.
