"What happened?" Sang Qingxiao's question went unanswered.
The Dragon Guard repeatedly urged her to get into the carriage. Seeing his relatively polite demeanor, though tinged with urgency, Sang Qingxiao decided not to press him further. As soon as she boarded the carriage, it took off swiftly, bouncing violently along the way.
Upon entering the palace, she noticed that the atmosphere was different from that day; it was no longer just tense but had taken on a more confrontational tone. Even with the special insignia the Dragon Guard possessed, the gatekeeper questioned them repeatedly, with a hint of challenge in his voice.
As they approached Xuande Emperor's chambers, the sounds they heard were no longer the cries of women but rather frantic screams. Sang Qingxiao saw a magnificently dressed woman leading a group of people, confronting Cai Zhuo and his Dragon Guard, while Qi Xiaomian stood back, firmly guarding the entrance to the chambers.
That was the Empress Dowager.
The previously silent Dragon Guard suddenly introduced himself to Sang Qingxiao. She had only been to the palace a few times and had never encountered this strikingly present yet capricious Empress Dowager before. Just from her silhouette, it was clear she possessed a commanding presence, one that could hold her ground in important situations—even if it was merely for show.
Seeing that the Dragon Guard was finally willing to speak, Sang Qingxiao pressed him for details about what had transpired in the palace.
Cai Leader had taken them to inquire with the Empress Dowager previously. Despite his polite demeanor, she felt offended and caused quite a scene that day. Cai Leader had to apologize profusely before things calmed down. However, early that morning, the Empress Dowager arrived with a large entourage, immediately accusing Cai Leader and Two Lords and Marquis of holding the Emperor hostage.
"Then let His Majesty come out and clarify," she said. "After taking medicine for two days, he should have enough strength to speak."
"Miss Sang," the Dragon Guard shot her a complex look. "I don't want to doubt your prescription, but frankly, it hasn't worked."
At first, it seemed to wake His Majesty once; he appeared fine and managed half an hour of work. But after a day, his condition worsened again. Cai Leader had been close by and hadn’t noticed when he received a kick from His Majesty.
"How could this happen?"
Indeed, they should have brought her into the palace sooner. However, after much bickering among the Imperial Physicians and another outburst from the Empress Dowager, they were delayed until now.
Not only did the Empress Dowager cause trouble herself, but she also summoned many ministers into the palace. Yet in His Majesty's current state, he couldn't see anyone; both sides remained at an impasse. Although Cai Leader was highly skilled in martial arts, he couldn't resort to violence against these people and had to endure without knowing how long he could hold them off.
Cai Leader hoped that Sang Qingxiao could awaken His Majesty briefly without harming him—shorter would be better—just enough for him to say a few words. If that wasn't possible, then perhaps writing a brief edict would suffice.
As she spoke, Sang Qingxiao entered through another small door into the chambers. As she got closer, she caught a whiff of a sour odor. Wasn't that blanket thrown away? How did it reappear?
Old Vine examined closely and concluded with alarm: "This is bad! How are these people caring for him? How did they allow fungal spores to enter his body?"
Entering his body! What would happen if fungal spores entered?
