After handling some official business, Ze pulled Sang Qingxiao to play chess. Shi Yun, illuminated by candlelight, looked at their profiles and suddenly remarked, "You two have quite a few similarities in your features."
Sang Qingxiao's heart skipped a beat.
Ze replied, "Shi Yun, have you been staring at paperwork too long? Miss Sang is so beautiful; how could she possibly compare to my old tree bark of a face?"
At his age, Ji Da should take it easy sometimes. Yet he insisted on holding the burdensome position of Chancellor, with the Ministry of War, Ministry of Justice, and Ministry of Revenue all demanding mental effort. With your old eyes getting dimmer, one careless mistake could lead to trouble. Why bother?
It would be better if we swapped places; you could take my leisurely position. Look at me—I've already finished my work for the past few days while you still have more than half left on your desk.
Hearing this, Shi Yun lost a few moves in the game.
"Shi Yun! You've messed up my chess game!"
Shi Yun laughed and said, "It's a losing position anyway. I'm just helping you save face; losing to a young lady would be embarrassing, wouldn't it?"
"Don't you want my Chancellor position? I plan to give you a little test ahead of time to see how you handle these affairs. Once you pass, I'll consider it."
"Shi Yun, that's just empty talk to dangle in front of me," she replied.
Feigning seriousness, Shi Yun said, "This is a real assessment. I'm getting older and nearly killed myself today; who knows how many years I have left? When I'm gone, who else but you will take the Chancellor position?"
"I won't do it! You can't trap me!"
The two elderly figures exchanged banter back and forth. It seemed noisy but was actually quite affectionate, and Sang Qingxiao watched with great interest.
At that moment, a voice came from the bed; the Xuande Emperor finally showed signs of waking.
In a hoarse voice, he called out for someone. The Two Lords raced over short distances, with Ze winning. He held the Xuande Emperor's hand while wiping away tears and snot.
Sang Qingxiao saw the shadow of a favored concubine in him, while Shi Yun stood solemnly beside them, her eyes gradually reddening—she bore a striking resemblance to the Empress Dowager.
"Your Majesty! You’ve finally awakened! I was so worried! Now that you're awake, is there anything you'd like to eat or drink? After such a serious illness, it's best to start with some millet porridge. I'll go get it right now."
Once Ze left, Shi Yun suddenly knelt down with a thud. After bowing her head several times, she said, "Your Majesty, I deserve to die a thousand deaths; please punish me!"
Qin Mu Hui weakly asked, "What happened now?"
"I had no choice but to imitate you and scold the Empress Dowager as well as the court officials," she confessed.
Ze approached with a bowl of porridge in hand and said in a small voice, "Your Majesty, you really should punish Shi Yun; she's truly out of control. So many warriors are outside holding swords and shields."
He still dared to impersonate you and show off in front of so many people!
The Xuande Emperor quickly grasped the key points: "Holding swords?! Is someone trying to usurp the throne?"
"Your Majesty, you must stand up for us! They are not just calling for a coup; they are falsely accusing us of holding you hostage. This is a tremendous injustice! We tried to explain, but they wouldn't listen. The Empress Dowager is even leading the charge."
The Xuan De Emperor assessed the situation with just a few words. "So, Shi Yun impersonated me to resolve this crisis?"
Zhe murmured to himself. Even if there were reasons behind it, he had committed a grave act of disrespect.
"In extraordinary times, what crime has he committed? This matter may be serious, but it cannot be disclosed to outsiders. Let it balance out. Once I rise, I will reward you privately."
With the situation defined, Zhe let out a sigh of relief for Shi Yun; his embellishments had not been in vain after all.
