"Little Girl!" He exclaimed, frustrated that she hadn't given any prior warning. If it weren't for noticing the oddity of the Sandstorm, he would have just acted to intercept it.
As for the papers, Qi Xiaomian had guessed their purpose; they were meant to let the evidence travel from household to household, allowing the people in the city to witness it firsthand.
Everyone except Qi Xiaomian was oblivious to the significance of those papers. Amidst the swirling sands, someone could no longer contain themselves and gave the order, leading to everyone in the residence being apprehended.
After three days of interrogation, Cui Cheng cried out in protest, claiming he was merely luring the enemy. Zheng Moru held onto a glimmer of hope; such a massive Sandstorm would surely shred the papers, leaving them without evidence and a chance at survival.
Both men stubbornly maintained their innocence. Zheng Moru had endured some torture, while Cui Cheng's frail appearance made others hesitant to be too harsh on him. As a result, progress stalled.
The Xuande Emperor lay on his bed, preoccupied with court matters. He turned to Cai Zhuo and remarked on the peculiar nature of the Sandstorm. "Has the Dragon Guard uncovered anything?"
The Dragon Guard had traced the Sandstorm's path northwest, discovering it had formed long before reaching Jingjing City, having passed through four provinces along the way. It hadn't suddenly appeared in the city.
The common folk along the route mentioned that while Sandstorms were rare in winter, they had occurred before and were not particularly alarming; one could simply stay indoors for a few days until it passed without causing disaster.
Recent reports from various provinces had also mentioned the Sandstorm.
So was it really just a coincidence?
"Your Majesty," Cai Zhuo interjected cautiously, "the Sandstorm has crossed four provinces before reaching Jingjing City—five in total! According to the Dragon Guard's observations, it's moving southeast. Although its intensity is waning, at this rate, it will cross several more provinces."
Such a vast area would take considerable time to traverse and required immense capability to control. Was there truly someone with such power? I find it hard to believe.
The Xuande Emperor pondered for a moment and chuckled. "Perhaps it's just lingering toxins from that poisonous mushroom; I am becoming paranoid."
Cai Zhuo laughed as well. "It's good to think things through. Here I am, ready for whatever Your Majesty wishes to say."
The imperial physician assured him he was fine, but Cai Zhuo remained uneasy. "Perhaps we should invite Miss Sang back to the palace."
That girl was always impatient about coming to court; it would be best not to trouble her too much. However, Xuande Emperor's words were double-edged; she was indeed quite capable.
Cai Zhuo paused for a moment before responding with a smile. "No matter how capable she is, she's still just a little girl. During that battle against the Whale Demon, she barely managed to win and took quite some time to recover from her injuries."
This indicated that although her talent was exceptional, her youth limited her abilities; she wasn't as miraculous as people claimed and relied heavily on various Demon Catcher techniques that appeared flashy but were not as effective as they seemed.
"So if you were to face her in battle, who would win?"
Cai Zhuo considered seriously before replying. "It's hard to say. The girl practices dual cultivation and possesses deep Inner Strength. However, I can sense her techniques are somewhat immature and likely not frequently used. If we were to engage purely in combat skills, I believe I would have an advantage over her."
"If she were to use her demon-catching techniques as support," he continued thoughtfully, "given my years of combat experience, I estimate that either outcome is possible; we wouldn't be too far apart in strength."
"That would indeed be remarkable," Xuande Emperor mused quietly. "If that's the case, there's nothing much to fear."
Cai Zhuo pretended not to hear him and lowered his head to tidy up Xuande Emperor's bedding. Just as he finished organizing everything, several officials arrived for an audience—of course, they couldn't pry any information from him easily and instead came seeking sympathy or advice.
In many cases, it's not that they lack ideas; rather, they need a word of assurance to guarantee their safety, to avoid any repercussions later on that could lead to accountability.
