Minister of Justice Gu Chen immediately interrupted the Xuande Emperor, exclaiming, "It's been three days, and we still haven't figured it out!"
The Xuande Emperor shot him a glare.
"Your Majesty," Gu Chen lamented, "I know you're angry with me, but I'm anxious too."
Zheng Moru understood that speaking up would only lead to his demise; he was already in a dire situation and remained silent.
Meanwhile, Cui Cheng kept protesting his innocence. At his age, Gu Chen feared that if he wasn't careful, someone might die in prison. For now, they were being well taken care of; no one else was treated like him in jail.
Having reached this point, Gu Chen couldn't sleep at night, worried that Lifespan might pass away from old age and the blame would fall on him. That would be truly unjust.
The Xuande Emperor, growing impatient, said, "Didn't you say there was evidence? The evidence was right there, yet none of you managed to obtain it!"
A sandstorm was brewing; it wasn't something Gu Chen could control. Yongxin Marquis had been searching for evidence for days without much success.
"Ah, you old foxes are just taking advantage of his youth," he scoffed. "What kind of tasks are you all handling? You think I don't see through your little schemes? You're just afraid that my kid will compete with you for credit."
"Your Majesty, please don't wrongfully accuse me," Gu Chen hurriedly replied. "I merely divided the tasks; Yongxin Marquis took them on himself."
"He was just trying to accommodate you all; he must have been flaunting his seniority at the scene," he added with a huff. "You shameless old folks."
Minister of Justice Gu Chen quickly smiled and said, "Your Majesty, we old fellows are already halfway in the grave. If we don't fight for our share now, we won't get another chance. Unlike Yongxin Marquis, who is still young and has achieved great merit—thanks to your guidance."
Hearing the flattery from Gu Chen, the Xuande Emperor laughed and scolded him lightly before becoming serious again. "You know very well that if there's no progress, it's likely because you're too afraid to show off in front of me. You must have some ideas in mind; go ahead and share them."
"Your Majesty," Gu Chen began cautiously, "I wish to apply for a search of the Imperial Master Manor."
After saying this, he immediately observed the Xuande Emperor's expression. Seeing no change in his demeanor, he continued, "The Zheng Family is merely a stopover for Zheng Moru. He hasn't returned in years and took the most important items with him during his escape. Those crucial items have been swept away by the wind."
Thus, when searching the Zheng Family residence, they found little of value.
As for Cui the Imperial Teacher, various signs indicated that he had private connections with Zheng Moru. This gathering at the outer residence seemed like an ordinary outing to him; there were no signs of any cleanup at home.
After being captured, the Xuande Emperor showed leniency towards Cui Family out of respect for their teacher-student relationship and only instructed them to keep an eye on everyone in the Cui Family. They hadn't left any traces under their watchful eyes.
Now that the situation had reached a stalemate, how could they ignore this only opportunity to break through?
The Xuande Emperor wasn't particularly nostalgic about this teacher-student bond; he was mainly concerned about how it would be perceived by scholars across the realm, which made him hesitant.
Minister of Justice Gu Chen understood what was on the Xuande Emperor's mind and suggested, "If the Imperial Teacher agrees to testify on his own behalf, then there wouldn't be so many taboos."
"Oh? Do you think he would agree?"
"Your Majesty," Gu Chen replied confidently, "the Imperial Master would certainly be willing to clear his name."
The Xuande Emperor understood the meaning behind Minister of Justice Gu Chen's words; it was time to employ some special measures. He simply instructed, "Don't let it escalate to the point of causing death. Until we have solid evidence, we must still show the necessary respect."
"Your Majesty, rest assured, I know how to handle this," Gu Chen replied.
