It was a place of gossip, and I had no interest in it.
Qi Xiaomian was excited, bustling with energy. The Emperor had arranged numerous activities for the people to enjoy—singing, folk performances, delicious food, and fireworks. Although the grand feast was condensed into a single day, it lasted for a full ten hours without interruption. Since the Emperor ascended the throne, such an event had never been held. Didn't you want to experience it?
What was there to see? Eating cold food and feeling the cold wind; it was better to gather with everyone, warm and carefree.
Qi Xiaomian insisted, "I’ll take you inside the palace."
Seeing Sang Qingxiao still hesitating to refuse, Qi Xiaomian quickly added, "Xiaoxiao, Cui Cheng is dead. He was executed by Lingchi and hated him deeply. The only one capable of such a thing must be Sang Bai Jue. Recently, he has been acting frequently, and I worry something might happen during the feast."
Lingchi? I never knew he could be so ruthless. Back in Exile Land, he was always reasonable; I had never seen him act violently or cause such bloodshed. Perhaps it was that crazy woman Sang Yumei who stirred things up?
In the end, Sang Qingxiao decided to attend the banquet with Qi Xiaomian.
On the day of the event, early in the morning, Qi Xiaomian came to pick her up. She rode in a carriage while Qi Xiaomian rode alongside on horseback. Along the way, they encountered many officials rushing to the palace with their families.
Halfway there, they met a carriage from the Right Chancellor's residence. Qi Xiaomian instinctively wanted to steer clear of it, but Ze enthusiastically approached them, boasting about his two children.
Inside the carriage, Sang Qingxiao did not lift the curtain but listened quietly. One child was named Rui Bao; she was a little girl whom Ze clearly favored more than his other child. In his ten sentences of bragging, nine were about how wonderful Rui Bao was.
Considering Sang Qingxiao's feelings, Qi Xiaomian tried several times to interrupt but failed; it was hard to deal with a father who was addicted to showing off his children.
Upon reaching the palace gate, Sang Qingxiao got off the carriage. Ze saw another opportunity to boast and approached them with his chubby little girl in his arms. Suddenly, the little girl opened her arms and wanted Sang Qingxiao to hold her.
Sang Qingxiao just smiled and patted her head before being pulled away by Qi Xiaomian.
As they walked ahead, he observed Sang Qingxiao's expression and struggled to find words of comfort. After racking his brain, he finally said, "She’s not cute at all; she can’t compare to how adorable you were when you were little."
"You’ve never seen me when I was little."
"That’s true," he admitted. "But it's not good for kids to be spoiled like that. As she grows up, the gap between you two will only widen."
"I don’t mind; don’t give me false comfort. That child isn’t even as tall as my knee; your words sound like a curse for her. Don’t say that again."
"Do you really not care?"
"Perhaps I care a little," Sang Qingxiao admitted as she suppressed her slight bitterness and looked around for something new to distract herself.
The officials under Xuande Emperor were quite capable; this large-scale banquet seemed well-organized from the moment Sang Qingxiao entered through the palace gates.
Officials entered through designated entrances while their identities were verified through several procedures. It was said that special tents had been set up for clothing inspections to prevent anyone from bringing prohibited items into the palace.
Every path was adorned with red and gold fabric and lanterns, while every tree bloomed with colorful silk flowers. Guards were stationed at every few steps, their uniforms also decorated, with Riri's black attire featuring hints of red, giving off a festive and spirited vibe.
