Was this item not something royal? Yet, there was an additional character, "Qin," followed by a patch of dirt that obscured it.
Qin? Yuan Chang's mind raced as he wondered if there had been any consorts with the surname Qin. It seemed there were none. His gaze fixated on the fresh dirt mixed in with the grime. What about the previous dynasties? Were there any consorts with the surname Qin then?
His thoughts spun rapidly, but anxiety made it hard to concentrate; the more he panicked, the more chaotic his mind became, and beads of cold sweat dripped down his forehead.
Qi Shuo understood that this matter was not suitable for public interrogation. Grabbing Yuan Chang by the collar, he dragged him into a nearby tent. A few trusted aides along with Sang Qingxiao and Huo Qi stayed inside the tent, while their subordinates tossed the card players from earlier into the tent and formed a barrier around it, preventing anyone from approaching.
Before Qi Shuo could speak, Yuan Chang moved first. He stomped angrily at the ground and, in his frustration, picked up a teapot intending to smash it.
Qi Shuo intervened, "Yuan Commander, are you afraid that others will expose you? Is this a desperate act of righteousness before me?"
Yuan Chang paused and immediately dropped his makeshift weapon. "No, you misunderstand. I have no ties to him; he's merely a lowly concubine's brother. What right does he have to associate with me? Regardless of what he has done, I am completely unaware."
"How can I trust your empty words?"
"I... I won't hit him anymore. I just want to know what is going on."
"Are you that anxious?" Qi Shuo sat down leisurely and said, "As for your family, you can interrogate them while I listen."
"No, they are not family."
Yuan Chang knew this relationship was complicated and wanted to get answers quickly to clear his name. He turned to face the man who had been thrown in with him, wishing he could tear him apart. Taking a deep breath, he restrained himself and crouched down to grab the man's hair, forcing him to look into his eyes.
Through gritted teeth, he demanded, "Tell me! Where did this piece of jade come from?"
The man felt guilty and realized the gravity of the situation; fear gripped him as he looked at Yuan Chang with pleading eyes but dared not speak.
At that moment, Yuan Chang revealed a hint of a smile and softened his tone slightly. "I have an idea of what you've done. If my guess is correct, your life is certainly forfeit. However, if you confess honestly, I might be able to help protect your family."
Upon hearing this, the man began to sob. Just as Yuan Chang's patience was wearing thin, he stammered out bits of information: "I... I just happened to see a hole and crawled in. In the dark, I took something without thinking; I was short on cash and took a risk to exchange it for some money."
"A hole?" Yuan Chang shouted. "Where is this hole?"
"Right beneath that pile of bird droppings!"
Qi Shuo immediately interjected, "You were the one who dumped those droppings."
"No, it's not me! It just happened!" Yuan Chang exclaimed, grabbing his hair and slamming his head down in frustration. "You dare to steal from the Royal Tomb and even sell it! You should have told me as soon as you discovered it!"
If he had been informed earlier, he wouldn't be in such a passive position now. He could have instructed someone to secretly fill it in long ago.
Now that the Royal Tomb has been dug into, if anything is found, it must mean they have reached the burial chamber. With this incident coming to light, his life is at stake!
