Once again, the Xuande Emperor pressed Shi Yun about the Bandits. Shi Yun deliberately tried to frighten him. "Your Majesty, I have questioned the witnesses from that time. From their accounts, I analyzed that these attackers moved in a coordinated manner, demonstrating considerable strength and decent equipment, suggesting they were trained by someone."
"They exhibited a high level of obedience, and I boldly speculate that they might be from the military."
Following this line of thought, I reviewed recent military reports and found no instances of deserters. It was impossible for them to be from the four divisions stationed in the east, west, south, or north.
After ruling out our own people, I began to suspect the presence of foreigners near Jingjing City. The most conspicuous among them were the Foreign Students.
Upon hearing this, Qi Xiaomian lowered his head to conceal a smile in his eyes. Shi Xiang's tactics were yet another attempt to divert blame. The crucial point was that even if blame were shifted, the Xuande Emperor would not dare act against them.
After all, there were princes from various nations among them. Unless they committed a grave offense, moving against them would be tantamount to declaring war.
However, the Xuande Emperor hesitated. "Shi Xiang, this is merely your speculation. Do you have any evidence?"
"I am currently searching for it. However, Your Majesty, we must be cautious in investigating them; it will take considerable time."
The Xuande Emperor pondered for a moment. "Aside from what you mentioned, do you have any other basis for your speculation?"
Shi Yun replied confidently, "Your Majesty, witnesses claimed they heard the Bandits communicating in an unintelligible language. When asked to imitate it, they were vague and indistinct; it was clear it was not our native tongue."
"Furthermore, the Bandits appeared just after the students entered Jingjing City. The matter regarding the mausoleum has been widely discussed and never concealed from anyone; thus, their route would be easy to ascertain."
"Before this group of students entered Jingjing City, the Court had thoroughly eliminated spies within the city. While we cannot guarantee complete eradication, it is highly unlikely that several Bandits went unnoticed."
"This group of students holds significant status; various nations have discreetly sent many followers along with them. For instance, the little princess from Dayu Dynasty has five attendants on record but likely has more hidden away. We cannot monitor all their companions; thus, these individuals often move freely."
"Moreover, they possess strength, orderliness, equipment, and have undergone rigorous training—almost every aspect perfectly matches the characteristics of Bandits."
After Shi Yun finished his analysis, there was an uproar in the court. Mingze looked at Shi Yun in confusion and seemed about to speak when Shi Yun shot him a warning glance that silenced him.
The Xuande Emperor was taken aback by Shi Yun's words and turned to Mingze. "The reception of students falls under the Ministry of Rites, which you oversee. Given their special status, you personally led their reception to demonstrate how much the Court values them."
Mingze had devoted himself day and night to this task and knew their every move best.
Recalling Shi Yun's warning glance, Mingze replied to the Emperor, "Those individuals are quite unruly; you are aware of this as well. However, they are guests—noble guests—who may be students but are treated as high-ranking envoys."
"Although I have assigned people to keep watch constantly, I can only follow protocol and maintain some distance to give them freedom; if we monitor them too closely, it would raise questions about our nation's dignity and decorum."
The Xuande Emperor thought about the numerous outrageous demands made by these students and their audacious demeanor. He increasingly felt that Shi Yun's speculation might indeed hold some truth.
With a mysterious confidence, he believed that under his rule, no one would dare openly challenge his imperial authority; therefore, it must be outsiders who were responsible!
They could only let them run rampant!
Facing the emperor's wrath, Mingze cautiously replied, "Your Majesty, even if they are bandits, they have not committed murder or arson; they only rob people and take money. Without concrete evidence, it is truly difficult to convict them."
