On that day, just as they were about to close up for the night, Lian Baoying, Shi Yuan, and Wen Zhaojun stepped into the Small Tavern right on time. Their clothes were dusty, marked with numerous footprints, and they appeared quite disheveled. Shi Yuan had two bloodstains on his face, while Lian Baoying kept moving his shoulders, suggesting he was also injured.
Who did they fight with?
Just looking at the footprints, there were at least five different sets. Sang Qingxiao immediately asked if they had been beaten up by a group.
Wen Zhaojun took a seat beside the table, fuming. "Pretty much, it was a brawl."
"With whom?"
Sang Qingxiao pondered for a moment. Wen Jijiang had a formidable presence, and the Imperial Academy had strict regulations; students generally wouldn't dare to fight openly. So it must have been those Foreign Students.
It was indeed them! Lian Baoying was furious. They strutted around arrogantly, refusing to speak. After enduring their provocations for days, they couldn't just back down; they had to wait for them to make the first move before retaliating.
They only landed a few punches and kicks on us; the outcome wasn't even clear yet. It felt as if we had suffered a tremendous loss, letting their guards take us on. Fortunately, there were quite a few spirited students among us. More and more joined in; otherwise, we would have sustained even worse injuries.
What about the Grand Scholar and Headmaster?
Of course, they would intervene. As soon as they got wind of the situation, they rushed over. But those Foreign Students were truly despicable; they had their guards block our Masters. It was only thanks to Shi Yuan that we managed to call in people from the Military Affairs Office to help wrap things up.
Shi Yuan explained that he wanted to participate in the Imperial Examination and that his grandfather had entrusted Wen Jijiang to teach him privately. Therefore, he hadn't participated in the fight initially. When students reported the incident, Wen Jijiang understood the Foreign Students' tactics and instructed him to exit the Imperial Academy through a side door to seek help from the Military Affairs Office.
However, those people were too arrogant; even when the Government intervened, they remained unafraid. While I was helping out at the Military Affairs Office during the scuffle, I also got hit by them but fought back in return, so it wasn't entirely one-sided.
Lian Baoying continued his thoughts: after the fight ended, they became even more insufferable, turning around and claiming we provoked them first. The Masters wanted to support us but could only rely on verbal accounts without any solid evidence. Thus, Wen Jijiang could only give them a light punishment—ordering their guards not to step foot into the Imperial Academy.
Wen Jijiang's punishment was already generous enough for them, yet they still had the audacity to cry injustice as if they were standing outside the palace gates demanding an explanation from His Majesty.
The Masters told us to go home first while they followed into the palace.
Wen Zhaojun pouted in grievance. "His Majesty should stand up for us, right?"
Dream on!
Shi Yuan rolled his eyes. "His Majesty is probably blaming us for being troublesome and causing him trouble."
Lian Baoying looked troubled as well and whispered, "My grandmother once said that His Majesty has become increasingly muddled as he grows older; we Lian Family members need to keep a low profile."
Seeing his friends looking dejected and lost, Sang Qingxiao decided to personally cook a feast for them. After just a few cups of wine had been consumed, news arrived from outside the palace where some young attendants were stationed.
Indeed, His Majesty reprimanded them! Even Wen Jijiang got caught up in it and was fined half a month's salary.
Lian Baoying dropped his cup in disbelief. "He really is getting old and confused!"
Shi Yuan mimicked his grandfather's serious demeanor and said cautiously, "Mind your words!"
Lian Baoying took a deep breath, ultimately deciding not to say anything more.
When Qi Xiaomian came over for dinner, he saw a table full of slightly tipsy drunks. Sang Qingxiao was worried they might let something slip after drinking, so he insisted they drink some hangover soup before allowing them to go home.
Upon seeing Qi Xiaomian, Lian Baoying's eyes widened as she pulled him to sit down and reminded him that the little princess from the Dayu Dynasty was here for a marriage alliance, and her target was him!
