After a hearty meal, Huo Qi pulled Qi Xiaopeng aside.
"You foolish boy, don't you know your own worth? You actually think you can secure a position in the Court? Have you dealt with their tricks?"
Before they could exchange a few more words, Huo Qi began to belittle him. Qi Xiaopeng felt indignant. "Aren't you the ones who always say not to waste time outside and to have a goal, to find something to do? I listened to your advice and came here, and now you're criticizing me?"
Huo Qi observed his expression and asked, "Did your brother bully you?"
"How could that be! Don't say such nonsense."
"Then he must be sidelining you. Logically speaking, after the Qi Family went through that ordeal, they still stand at the top of the martial world, but their confidence has weakened somewhat. There are many trivial matters that should require you brothers to work together. Yet here you are, wandering outside. It must be that your brother, Yi Zhishang, is unwilling to share power with you."
"But I left with tasks assigned to both of us. How come that little bit of authority was taken away by him?"
Qi Xiaopeng lacked confidence as he spoke. "The Liang Family holds power in both the Court and the martial world. My brother says if the Qi Family doesn't keep up, we'll eventually be trampled by the Liang Family. He controls the overall situation and can't spare any effort; he can only place his hopes on me."
Huo Qi chewed on some peanuts and scoffed, "I told you so; you're naive. Does he not know your temperament? With your nature, you can't establish yourself in the Court. All those countless words he said for your own good are merely to exclude you from the power of the Qi Family."
"Stop trying to sow discord. My brother still cares for me. In times of crisis, even when he's in danger himself, he thinks about protecting my life."
"He is burdened with the responsibilities of the family head. He consolidates power to secure his position as head of the family; his priority is always being the family head."
Huo Qi stared at Qi Xiaopeng's increasingly despondent expression and sighed. "It seems this foolish boy knows what's going on in his heart. Well, there are benefits to leaving; it avoids future conflicts among brothers."
"Let me tell you a secret: when I left your family, I didn't leave empty-handed. I took quite a bit of wealth that your brother doesn't know about. If you could be as filial as A Mian, then after a hundred years, I might share some of this wealth with you. A Mian would definitely take the larger share since he has to take care of Silly Beast."
"A hundred years? Don't joke around! My brother has looked into you; although he couldn't uncover your true background, he suspects you're not ordinary. You might live longer than I do."
Huo Qi laughed. "That's true; I'll wait until you're down and out before giving it to you."
"Down and out? Can't you wish for something good for me? Since I've promised my brother to come here, I'm not just looking to muddle through."
"With my skills, I can still achieve a decent ranking in the Martial Arts Examination. Even if it's not high or low, I can use some wealth to secure a position in the Capital; I won't starve."
Huo Qi watched Qi Xiaopeng for a long while before raising his hand. When Qi Xiaopeng flinched, Huo Qi merely placed his hand on his head and ruffled his hair. "You've matured quite a bit in these few months apart. If you're looking for a position, why bother with money? Let Qi Xiaomian arrange it for you."
Finally, the examination day arrived. The Foreign Students had been persistent for a long time before receiving permission from Xuande Emperor to participate in the Imperial Examination; however, their scores were listed separately and could not be ranked.
The Foreign Students ceased their disturbances and truly focused on studying at the Imperial Academy. The Masters there were also impressed by their earnest attitude toward learning, leaving them somewhat bewildered.
Were these really those students who used to bully others and cause trouble?
The Masters were always cautious during their teachings, secretly testing their students' knowledge. They were inwardly astonished by what they learned. As for the Imperial Examination, it was truly hard to predict who would emerge victorious and who would not.
