Man Jiang Hong 0

With anger in my heart, standing by the railing, the drizzle stops. I raise my eyes, look up to the sky and let out a long roar, my spirit intense. Thirty years of fame and fortune turned to dust, eight thousand miles of clouds and moon, don't waste time, my youthful hair has turned white, a sense of desolation. The shame of Jingkang is still unavenged, when will the hatred of loyal subjects be extinguished? Driving a long chariot, trampling through the Helan Mountain pass. With lofty aspirations, I feast on the flesh of the barbarians, laughing and talking, thirstily drinking the blood of the Huns, waiting to reclaim the old mountains and rivers, facing the heavens! 0

This poem "Man Jiang Hong" was written by the famous Southern Song general Yue Fei, expressing his ambitious and passionate patriotism. Yue Fei's eloquent discussions of military affairs in "Man Jiang Hong" showcase his literary talent, making it a remarkable piece that resonates through the ages. It has inspired countless righteous individuals to rise up against foreign invasion, instilling determination and confidence in defending their homeland. 0

During the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, Nurhaci began the unification wars of the Jurchen in 1593. In just over a decade, he destroyed Hada, Huihua, Ula, and Yehe, rapidly establishing his power between the borders of the Baishan and Heishui rivers. Under Nurhaci's leadership, the Jurchen launched a strong offensive against the Ming Dynasty's rule. The common people were displaced and homeless, suffering greatly. There was widespread devastation and sorrow... Meanwhile, the Ming Dynasty was plagued by corruption, with the Eunuch Faction rampant, indulging in favoritism and cruelty towards loyal subjects. The nobility remained engrossed in luxury and excess, exploiting and oppressing the common people mercilessly. 0

On a winter night in 1607, the weather was exceptionally cold in the heavily fortified city of Jinzhou in Liaoxi. The north wind howled, and the clouds threatened to freeze. Inside the military command center defending Jinzhou, Yu Jiangong, the handsome guard of Liaoxi, furrowed his brows as he sat at his desk. He recalled how Nurhaci's power had rapidly expanded southwestward. In the borderlands, parts of the region fell like leaves before the four banners' iron cavalry under his command, leaving mountains and rivers shattered. Now that Nurhaci had unified the Jurchen tribes of Jianzhou and gradually absorbed most of the Haixi Jurchen and wild Jurchen tribes, his influence was steadily encroaching southwestward, posing a severe threat to the Ming Dynasty's defense line in Liaodong. His territory was nearing Fushun and Qinghe, and soon it would endanger Shengjing, Guangning, Jinzhou, Ningyuan, and other areas. Yu Jiangong couldn't help but feel anxious. 0

At that moment, Deputy Guard Chen Tao entered and presented him with a letter. Yu Jiangong took the letter and saw that it was addressed to him in elegant handwriting: "To Brother Yu." He recognized that this letter was from his junior brother Lin Enzhe, who was far away in Jinling. Both Yu Jiangong and Lin Enzhe were disciples of the Wudang Taiji school; their master, Daoist Taikong, was the 12th generation successor of Taiji Zhang Sanfeng. As lay disciples of Daoist Taikong, both had mastered the true teachings of Taiji swordsmanship. After they completed their training on Wudang Mountain, Lin Enzhe returned to his hometown in Jinling to establish the renowned Enze Gang and married his fellow disciple Miao Shuyan. Meanwhile, Yu Jiangong wandered the world and was fortunate enough to marry the female hero Han Ying. 0

In the 28th year of Wanli's reign, the couple met You Fudu Yushi Xiong Yanbi, who became sworn brothers with them. Xiong Yanbi admired Yu Jiangong's martial arts talent and handsome demeanor and recommended him to the court. With Nurhaci eyeing the Great Ming Dynasty's territory covetously during this critical time for recruitment, he was dispatched to serve as a guard in Jinzhou. His wife Han Ying remained steadfast by his side as they jointly defended Jinzhou. 0

Yu Jiangong opened Lin Enzhe's letter and read: "Brother: It has been a long time since we last corresponded; I miss you dearly. Since you have been expelling the Hu invaders and achieving great deeds in the borderlands for over three years now, both my wife and I often think of you and Sister-in-law. We hope to follow your example and contribute our modest efforts to our Great Ming. Currently, I am preparing a batch of supplies to send to the borderlands for our Ming army to use against the Tartars. Additionally, since I had a son two years ago, my wife is now several months pregnant again; our family will soon welcome another new member. I wanted to share this joy with you. I also look forward to your swift expulsion of the Tartars so you can return to our southern homeland. To express my longing for you, I have specially composed a poem titled 'Longing for Home' as a gift." 0

The closing of the letter was signed "Junior Enze." After reading it, Yu Jiangong placed the letter on the table, his mind filled with worries. After a moment of contemplation, he picked up a brush and wrote a poem titled "Yu Meiren" on the paper on his desk. 0

When will the extravagance and indulgence end? Concern for the country is greater than concern for the people! The Eunuch Faction's sycophants are rampant again, and loyal officials cannot bear to look back at the court and the people. The Eastern Seas still exist, but there is no heart to appreciate them. How much sorrow can one have? It is just like wine entering the sorrowful intestines, making sorrow even more sorrowful! 0

Yu Jiangong had just put down his pen when his wife, Han Ying, entered the room with her big belly. Han Ying was several months pregnant, and in about a month, their child would be born. Yu Jiangong felt a pang of sympathy for his wife and hurried to support her, gently saying, "Be careful!" Han Ying smiled and replied, "It's fine, big brother. I'm not that delicate. The weather is particularly cold today; it might snow. I specially prepared a few dishes to warm you up." Yu Jiangong said, "Enze sent a letter; take a look." After reading Lin Enzhe's letter, Han Ying joyfully exclaimed, "Is Shuyan going to have a baby too? That's wonderful! I wonder if it's a boy or a girl. They already have a son, Lin Cheng; this time they must be hoping for a daughter! I wonder if our child will be a boy or a girl?" Yu Jiangong replied, "Didn't you say the little one is very active and keeps kicking you? I guess it must be a boy!" Han Ying said, "I also want a boy; that way, the Yu family will have an heir." Yu Jiangong responded, "As long as it's your child, I will love either a son or a daughter." Han Ying felt sweet inside as Yu Jiangong held her hand. The two chatted while having dinner. 0

The next morning, as soon as they woke up, guards reported that Xiong Yanbi, the inspector stationed in Ningyuan, had sent someone with an urgent message. Yu Jiangong opened the message and saw that Xiong Yanbi wrote that he and the garrison commander of Ningyuan, Zu Dashow, had gone to Hetuala (now Fushun Xinbin) yesterday to gather intelligence on the enemy. They would return from Hetuala in about three days and wanted to meet Yu Jiangong at Mount Lushan in Guangning (now Beizhen in Jinzhou) to discuss national affairs. Yu Jiangong put down the letter and said to Han Ying, "Brother Yanbi went with Zu Dashow to Hetuala to scout the enemy's situation. He wants me to meet him at Lushan in a few days. I plan to head towards Guangning the day after tomorrow. You should rest in Jinzhou these days and take care of yourself until I return..." Before Yu Jiangong could finish, Han Ying interrupted him: "I don't want you to go alone; I want to go with you. Didn't I say before that I am your shadow? Wherever you go, I will go too!" After pondering for a moment, Yu Jiangong replied, "If that's the case, let's set off for Guangning's Lushan today. We are both from the south and have never visited Lushan before. We can pay our respects at the Wenshu Monastery there to honor the famous minister Yelü Chucai from the Yuan Dynasty and then wait for Brother Yanbi and Zu Dashow nearby." Han Ying clapped her hands in delight. Although Yu Jiangong had been married for many years, Han Ying still acted like a child in front of him. 0

After the two had breakfast, they changed into ordinary cotton clothes. Yu Jiangong ordered someone to harness Han Ying's horse to a sedan chair, allowing Han Ying to sit inside while he rode an ordinary warhorse. The two set off towards the northeast! Knowing that Xiong Yanbi and Zu Dashow would not arrive at Lushan for at least three or four days, Yu Jiangong and Han Ying were not in a hurry. By the time the sun set, they had only just reached the foot of Lushan. In deep winter, the sun sets early, and the sky quickly turned to dusk. A cold northern wind howled, lifting leaves from the ground and creating a rustling sound. Seeing that there was only one inn at the foot of Lushan, Yu Jiangong noticed a lantern hanging from a pillar in front of the inn. He saw that the inn was named "Qingqing Hostel," likely inspired by Wang Wei's line "The inn is green with new willow colors." He did not expect to find such a poetic inn in this northern barbaric land. Yu Jiangong helped Han Ying down from the sedan chair, and as they tied up their horses, a waiter who had heard their arrival welcomed them into the inn. The innkeeper smiled broadly and asked, "Are you two gentlemen looking to stay?" Yu Jiangong replied, "Yes, please prepare a guest room for us." The innkeeper said, "I will arrange for you both to stay in the second room on the west side." After a long day of travel, Yu Jiangong, being young and strong with martial skills, did not feel tired. However, Han Ying, though also skilled in martial arts, felt fatigued due to her pregnancy. The two entered their room, had dinner, and went to bed early. 0

The next morning at dawn, after waking up and having breakfast, Yu Jiangong and Han Ying left the inn and walked about a kilometer west to reach Lushan. Although Lushan was majestic and towering in winter, it appeared somewhat desolate and empty. The withered branches and fallen leaves from autumn swayed chaotically in the wind, presenting a scene of decay. Only the ever-green pines and cypresses displayed Lushan's solemnity and ancient charm. Yu Jiangong supported Han Ying as they arrived at Wenshu Temple. They bowed several times before the statue of Yelü Chucai. Noticing an ancient zither on a wooden table beside Yelü Chucai's statue, Yu Jiangong approached it, brushed off the dust, and began to play Yue Fei's "Manjianghong." Originally a passionate and powerful piece, Yu Jiangong played it with a somewhat melancholic tone that was both poignant and sorrowful. Han Ying understood her husband's heart well; she knew he was worried about and dissatisfied with the current court's corruption and ineffectiveness. Yu Jiangong said, "Yelü Chucai was a wise minister who assisted several emperors of the Yuan Dynasty; however, ultimately his achievements were due to wise rulers like Genghis Khan." Han Ying replied, "Yes, excellent horses need someone like Bo Le to discover them; Yelü Chucai should be grateful for encountering good rulers." Yu Jiangong gritted his teeth and said, "Unfortunately, our Great Ming's Wanli Emperor is an incompetent ruler who has not attended court for decades and relies heavily on the Eunuch Faction while distancing himself from virtuous ministers. The ancients said 'Integrity does not invite disaster; honesty does not seek fame,' but now honest officials dare not speak the truth in court; once they advise with integrity, it is difficult for them to protect themselves." Han Ying sighed, "It seems that under the oppression of the Eunuch Faction, there are no loyal subjects left in court who dare to speak frankly." Yu Jiangong said, "Indeed, Brother Yanbi is a great hero with extraordinary talent who can strategize from within while winning battles from afar; unfortunately, he has been marginalized by the Eunuch Faction and can only serve as an advisor in Liaodong. Otherwise, with his abilities he could have easily become Minister of War." Han Ying remarked, "Confucius said 'In poverty one should cultivate oneself; in prosperity one should benefit all.' He meant that when one is unsuccessful they should focus on self-cultivation and moral integrity; when successful they should think about benefiting all people. Brother Xiong endures humiliation for our Great Ming's vast territory; he truly is our good example." Yu Jiangong replied earnestly, "Exactly! Therefore we must assist him in defending the Borderlands; we cannot let the Tartars' schemes succeed." As he spoke passionately, he unconsciously held Han Ying's right hand. She responded with an "Mm" and smiled at him. The two walked out of Wenshu Temple towards Wanghai Temple on the mountain. Halfway up the mountain, a cold wind swept through; Han Ying shivered suddenly as she felt some pain in her abdomen. Yu Jiangong quickly took off his cloak and draped it over her shoulders out of concern that she might catch cold. He said to her, "The weather is too cold; we shouldn't risk getting sick. Let's go back to the inn!" Han Ying nodded in agreement. Before they could fully descend the mountain, dark clouds suddenly gathered overhead as if pressing down upon them; heavy snow began to fall like goose feathers. Fortunately, since Qingqing Hostel was very close to Lushan, they returned there in no time. 0

Seeing them return, the innkeeper warmly said, "I've prepared food and drinks for you both; it's waiting in your room." They thanked him before heading back to their room. Yu Jiangong stoked the charcoal brazier until it burned brightly; gradually warmth filled their room while outside snow continued to fall heavily until everything was blanketed in white. Han Ying looked out at the snowstorm and said, "It's snowing so heavily; I wonder how Brother Xiong and Zu Dashow are doing?" Like his wife, Yu Jiangong was particularly concerned about their safety but still comforted her saying, "They should be fine; let's wait here peacefully for them." Han Ying poured a glass of wine for Yu Jiangong and softly said, "I hope this snow stops soon so they can finish gathering intelligence on Hetuala and leave quickly." Both were worried about Xiong Yanbi and Zu Dashow's safety and hardly slept well throughout the night. 0

The snow had fallen all night without stopping, and the sky remained dark and cold the next morning. The eerie northern wind howled, swirling the snow in the air and on the ground, creating a blanket that covered everything. As Yu Jiangong opened the door, he was immediately hit by the fierce wind mixed with icy snow, making it nearly impossible to keep his eyes open. He quickly shut the door and said to Han Ying, "With this much snow, we can't go anywhere." Both of them grew increasingly worried about Xiong Yanbi and Zu Dashow's safety. 0

Before long, the innkeeper and a young attendant, both wearing bamboo hats and cloaked in raincoats, entered their room to deliver breakfast. Despite the short distance between rooms, frost and snow clung to their hats and coats. Yu Jiangong asked the innkeeper, "The weather in the north changes too quickly. I've been here for a few years and have never seen snow like this!" The innkeeper replied, "I was born and raised among the Jurchens, and I haven't seen such heavy snow in many years. At this rate, it might continue for several days and nights." 0

Han Ying interjected, "Innkeeper, with this much snow, who knows when it will stop? Have you stocked enough food and drink for us guests?" The innkeeper assured them, "We have plenty of food and drink prepared. Even if all our rooms are filled, we can manage for ten days or more. However..." He hesitated, not wanting to continue. Noticing the innkeeper's worried expression, Yu Jiangong pressed on, "What is it?" 0

The innkeeper continued anxiously, "If this heavy snow keeps falling, many wild animals on the mountain will struggle to find food and may starve. The worst part is that if the wolves can't find food, they might come down from the mountains. There are no other households within miles—only our inn..." Hearing this made Yu Jiangong's heart sink. However, wanting to keep Han Ying calm, he replied confidently, "Don't be afraid; wolves fear fire most. Innkeeper, do you have enough firewood stored?" 0

The innkeeper responded, "I have a woodpile prepared; we've used some during winter but there should still be about half a pile left." Yu Jiangong said, "That's good. I'll go outside to gather some branches." Seeing the puzzled looks from the innkeeper and the attendant, he added, "Please come with me to carry back what I cut." 0

The three of them braved the wind and snow as they stepped outside the inn. Yu Jiangong lightly leaped onto a poplar tree in front of the inn. He pulled out a black-gold short sword from his pocket—a weapon he had stumbled upon during his travels that could cut through iron like mud. Drawing the sword from its sheath, he gently sliced at a dry branch on the poplar tree; instantly, branches fell to the ground covered in snow. 0

The innkeeper and attendant were amazed as they hurriedly collected the fallen branches and tied them up. Yu Jiangong cut down about twenty poplar trees before the innkeeper exclaimed joyfully, "That's enough! Any more would be too much for our woodpile!" Yu Jiangong chuckled back, "If you say it's enough then it's enough! Let's not store these in the woodpile; instead, place two bundles of firewood in each room. In a day or two they'll dry out. If wolves come near, guests can light them on charcoal fires and throw them outside; wolves won't dare approach fire." 0

The innkeeper nodded repeatedly in agreement. After putting his black-gold short sword back into its sheath and tucking it away again, Yu Jiangong jumped down from the tree and helped distribute firewood into each guest room. 0

Once they finished this task, Yu Jiangong thought for a moment before asking the innkeeper, "Do you have any bows or arrows at the inn?" The innkeeper quickly replied, "I have a set of bows and arrows stored in the woodhouse; please follow me." 0

Yu Jiangong followed him to the woodhouse at the western end of the inn where the innkeeper retrieved an old bow and arrow set hanging on the wall. Upon inspecting it closely, Yu Jiangong noticed that while rusty and worn out, it was still usable for shooting wolves; however, there were only five rusty iron arrows—far too few for dealing with a pack of wolves. 0

Looking around in the woodhouse's northwest corner where two bamboo rafts stood propped against a wall gave him an idea. He laid one raft down on the ground and used his black-gold sword to cut off its ropes before slicing each bamboo pole into two segments. He then broke each segment into five or six smaller sticks and sharpened one end of each stick with his sword. With around two hundred bamboo poles from both rafts combined, he quickly fashioned over a thousand sharp arrows in no time at all—leaving both the innkeeper and attendant dumbfounded. 0

After moving the bows and arrows back to his room with them, Han Ying asked curiously, "Are all these arrows meant for shooting wolves?" Yu Jiangong confirmed with a nod: "Yes! Once it stops snowing we'll clear away all this snow around the inn so that any wolves will be fully exposed within our sight." 0

The wind howled fiercely for another two days and nights until finally on the third morning when dark clouds began to disperse; as winds calmed down and snow ceased falling—the accumulated snow reached up to people's knees under bright sunlight glistening like diamonds. 0

Yu Jiangong along with the innkeeper, attendant, and several guests cleared away all accumulated snow around the inn so that if wolves approached they would be clearly visible. After finishing up outside work they returned inside their rooms where Yu Jiangong began worrying again about Xiong Yanbi and Zu Dashow. 0

He took down his Xuanning Sword from where it hung on the wall; this sword had been gifted by his mentor Daoist Taikong who had forged two exceptional swords years ago—one being Xuanning Sword for himself while giving another named Xuanyu Sword to his junior Lin Enzhe. Both swords were incredibly sharp. 0

Stepping outside again into an open area in front of the inn he began practicing Tai Chi swordplay. Han Ying followed him out of their room leaning against a windowsill watching her husband dance with his sword gracefully. The long sword in Yu Jiangong's hand moved like a silver snake—flexible yet powerful—at times resembling a soaring crane—lightweight yet agile. Wherever his sword pointed towards caused snow from tree branches above or rooftops nearby to fall like sparkling crystals onto ground below—a beautiful sight indeed. 0

As people gathered around drawn by sounds of admiration erupted from their lips praising him enthusiastically; impressed by Yu Jiangong’s heroism—the innkeeper immediately caught a chicken from their coop instructing his attendant to slaughter it while ordering staff members to prepare it well for both Yu Jiangong and Han Ying. 0

Han Ying reminded him playfully saying: “Don’t let those chickens get snatched away by wolves!” The innkeeper replied: “Good reminder! I’ll have my attendant move them into storage right away.” 0

Yu Jiangong also instructed him to place guests’ horses inside storage as well. 0

After bustling around inside and outside throughout day—the night soon fell upon them bringing with it fierce northern winds howling angrily mixing dead leaves along with sand hitting against doors & windows suddenly piercing through silence came an eerie wolf howl echoing from afar startling everyone who realized that wolf packs were finally approaching. 0

Indeed soon enough wolf howls grew closer & closer accompanied by chaotic hoofbeats as packs rushed towards their direction prompting guests within rooms according previous arrangements ignited dried poplar branches throwing them outside onto open ground surrounding entire inn securely encircled by blazing torches just as pack of wolves arrived surrounding their premises—these creatures feared flames refusing to advance any further. 0

Yu Jiangong gently opened a crack in the window of the room and saw that outside, a dense, dark pack of wolves surrounded the entire inn. There were at least four to five hundred wolves in this scene. The deep, hungry eyes of the wolves reflected a chilling light against the white snow, making one shiver. Some wolves in the pack were panting with their mouths open, and the steam rising from their mouths evaporated under the light of the torches and the faint moonlight, giving off a murderous aura. Yu Jiangong held his bow and arrow tightly, peering through the crack in the window to aim at the neck of an evil wolf and shot it with force. With a "whoosh," the wolf fell to the ground. The pack of wolves retreated a few steps in fear, but soon regained their composure; instead of retreating, they advanced cautiously toward the inn. 0

Seeing that a few bolder wolves had already reached the edge of the fire circle, one wolf gathered its courage and leaped over the flames. Yu Jiangong quickly shot a second arrow, hitting the wolf squarely in the head. The wolf fell into the flames. Instantly, a strong smell of burnt fur filled the air. The first reaction of the pack was to retreat quickly, but as the scent of roasted meat wafted from the charred wolf's body, the hungry pack rushed to its side. One wolf bit onto a leg of the dead wolf and dragged it out from the fire. The pack swarmed in and began to gnaw on the dead wolf. 0

Han Ying couldn't help but gasp at the bloody scene of wolves tearing apart their fallen comrade. Seeing that these starving wolves were actually consuming one of their own, Yu Jiangong feared that these desperate wolves might take risks and attack those inside the inn. He swiftly shot dozens of bamboo arrows at the pack, each arrow hitting a vital spot on an evil wolf; none survived as they were devoured by other wolves. The pack was clearly starving, leaving no bones behind after consuming the dead wolf. Sated, they licked their lips and looked back toward the inn. 0

Yu Jiangong thought to himself, "Aren't you satisfied yet? Do you want me to kill all of you?" He shot two more bamboo arrows into the pack, causing two more wolves to fall. This time, however, they did not consume their fallen comrades. One larger wolf suddenly let out a long howl; as its howl echoed, the pack turned and retreated, clearly recognizing this larger wolf as their leader issuing commands. In an instant, the pack vanished without a trace. 0

With the wolves gone, everyone in the inn rejoiced. Two guests dressed in long coats from the Jurchen tribe decided to leave now that the wolves had retreated. The innkeeper advised them, "Although the wolves have left, they won't go far; they could return at any moment." The two guests looked troubled and said, "But we have urgent matters to attend to." The innkeeper replied, "If that's the case, please feel free to go; just don't blame me if you encounter any danger." Yu Jiangong also said to them, "You two should listen to the innkeeper; staying here will be safer." 0

The two men glanced sideways at Yu Jiangong and Han Ying without responding; they placed a silver ingot on the counter and turned to leave. Once outside, they saddled their horses and rode eastward. Yu Jiangong noticed how effortlessly they mounted their horses; they clearly possessed martial skills and were not ordinary individuals. He wondered what urgent business they had heading east—could it be related to Xiong Yanbi and Zu Dashow? Thinking of Xiong Yanbi and Zu Dashow made Yu Jiangong feel anxious again. He wondered how they were doing now. Based on Xiong Yanbi's previous letter detailing their schedule for going to Hetuala, today marked day five; if everything went smoothly, they should have met him at Lushan by now. Their absence raised concerns—had they encountered danger? 0

Yu Jiangong dared not think further; fearing for his wife's worry, he refrained from sharing his thoughts with her. Han Ying seemed to sense Yu Jiangong's unease and said, "After such heavy snowfall, it's normal for Brother Xiong and Zu Dashow not to arrive here on time; you shouldn't worry too much." Hearing his wife's words eased Yu Jiangong's mind slightly. 0
