Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan, like Yu Jiangong, were disciples of the esteemed Master of Wudang. They both mastered the true teachings of their master and returned to their hometown in Jinling after completing their martial arts training. The families of Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan were well-known aristocratic clans in Jinling. After their marriage, they decided to establish a gang named the Enze Gang. At that time, aside from the two dominant martial arts schools, Shaolin and Wudang, four major gangs emerged: the Eastern Enze, Western Penghe, Southern Qingtian, and Northern Siji. The Western Penghe referred to the Penghe Gang, founded by the brothers Bai Songpeng from the Yuhua Mountain in the Western Regions. They created a unique martial art called "Deadly Golden Flute," known for its insidious and lethal techniques that dominated the western city. The hidden weapon skills associated with this golden flute were exceptionally formidable; whenever the name "Penghe Gang" and its "Deadly Golden Flute" were mentioned in the martial world, people would turn pale with fear.
The Southern Qingtian was established by Hero Yuan Qingtian and his wife Shen Chen, known as the Sun Moon Gang. Yuan Qingtian wielded the Sunlight Blade while Shen Chen carried the Moonlight Sword. Together in Foshan, Guangdong, they created a martial arts classic titled "The Art of Sun and Moon." The male protagonist practiced "Radiance of Sun and Moon," while the female protagonist trained in "Shadows of Sun and Moon." It was said that when this couple joined forces, no one could rival them in the world of martial arts. There was a saying circulating in the Jianghu: "With Sunlight Blade and Moonlight Sword, who dares to compete?" The Sun Moon Gang became the largest among the four major gangs due to its over ten thousand members.
The Northern Siji referred to the Jurchens who lived hidden away in Changbai Mountain in the Borderlands. Rarely seen in Zhongyuan, Siji was not only highly skilled in martial arts but also possessed profound knowledge of medicine. It was said that his medical skills could bring people back from death, akin to Hua Tuo or Bian Que. However, he had a peculiar personality and established rules in Jianghu that he would only treat Jurchens and not Han people.
Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan were indeed a match made in heaven. Both hailed from scholarly families in Jinling and had known each other since childhood as childhood sweethearts. As they grew older, their feelings for each other deepened significantly. Their parents noticed how well-suited they were for one another and decided to send them to Wudang Mountain to learn the world-renowned Tai Chi sword techniques. At Wudang Mountain, Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan practiced diligently, sparring with each other and making progress together. They not only mastered Tai Chi but also deepened their understanding of one another during this time.
After completing their training, they married and became an enviable couple. Instead of settling into complacency after marriage, they utilized their talents and wisdom to establish the Enze Gang. This gang not only promoted Tai Chi but also achieved great success in business.
The Lin family had been engaged in grain trading for generations. After Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan took over, they made this business flourish even more. With their sharp minds and business acumen, they quickly developed the Enze Gang into a wealthy commercial powerhouse. Meanwhile, Lin Enzhe's senior brother Yu Jiangong led the Ming army stationed at Jinzhou in the Borderlands. Understanding the importance of supplies for an army, Lin Enzhe generously donated large quantities of grain to support the Ming army's victories.
As the Enze Gang continued to grow stronger, Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan decided to build a magnificent headquarters by Mouchou Lake in Jinling. This headquarters was nestled within a lush bamboo grove that provided a serene environment with picturesque scenery. Within this garden stood four elegant pavilions named Jade Bamboo Tower, Purple Bamboo Pavilion, Emerald Bamboo Pavilion, and Black Bamboo Loft. Jade Bamboo Tower served as Lin Enzhe's residence where he managed gang affairs; Purple Bamboo Pavilion was home to Lin Ning where he studied and practiced; while Emerald Bamboo Pavilion was Lin Xiu's retreat where she read and painted leisurely. Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan resided in Black Bamboo Loft.
As an esteemed family, the Lin clan placed great importance on education for their descendants. Every child began systematic training in music, chess, calligraphy, painting, as well as Tai Chi martial arts at five years old. Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan devoted considerable effort into nurturing their three children. To help them practice their fundamentals better, they placed several large jars filled with clear water on an open space before Black Bamboo Loft. Each morning at dawn, the three siblings would stand on the edges of these jars to begin their basic training.
Tai Chi was the family’s traditional martial art emphasizing soft overcoming hard, stillness controlling movement, arriving later yet faster using minimal effort to move great weights. Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan personally taught their children Tai Chi; they patiently corrected their movements until they gradually grasped its essence. During this learning process, they discovered that Lin Ning was exceptionally gifted—not only intelligent but also quick-witted; he understood every technique taught with remarkable accuracy compared to his siblings Lin Cheng and Lin Xiu who lagged behind.
Lin Ning's talents extended beyond martial arts; he had a keen interest in poetry and painting with exceptional comprehension skills as well. The family had a library filled with numerous books where Lin Ning would eagerly read various texts every morning as if devouring knowledge from an ocean of information. In this library, he not only explored diverse literature but also honed his writing skills through practice—his calligraphy and painting steadily improved as he showcased extraordinary artistic talent.
Time flew by swiftly; soon Lin Ning blossomed into a graceful fourteen-year-old youth. Though still retaining some childish innocence, he exhibited an air of wisdom and bravery about him that delighted his parents’ hearts secretly. Although Lin Cheng and Lin Xiu were their biological children, they found themselves favoring Lin Ning more—perhaps due to his unique temperament or extraordinary potential displayed within him.
Lin Enzhe and Miao Shuyan often found themselves silently praying towards the Borderlands for Yu Jiangong and Han Ying’s spirits to bless Lin Ning with safety and prosperity so that he might one day avenge them.
Jinling experienced distinct seasons; however, snow rarely fell during wintertime—until this year’s winter when snowflakes began falling on December 28th like delicate feathers blanketing everything beneath them with a silver sheen. The bamboo forests appeared as if adorned by nature’s artistry—each branch glistening with frost like a scene from a dreamlike paradise.
Lin Ning, Lin Cheng, and Lin Xiu grew up amidst Jinling’s landscapes; having only heard tales about northern snow scenes without experiencing it firsthand until now when those fluffy snowflakes gently landed upon their cheeks bringing coolness—they found everything both novel yet amusing! Thus began their playful antics amidst snowy grounds—first practicing Tai Chi forms gracefully resembling an elegant dance amidst falling snowflakes.
Suddenly feeling a chill creeping deep within him causing him to shiver involuntarily—Lin Cheng called out to Lin Ning and Lin Xiu beside him whispering: “Isn’t it cold? Have you thought about drinking some wine to warm ourselves?”
Lin Ning exchanged glances with Lin Xiu before she hesitantly replied: “I mean we could… but where would we find wine?”
A sly smile crept onto Lin Cheng’s face as he lowered his voice: “A few days ago I saw father burying a jar of Huadiao wine near Zhu Mei Pavilion; let’s go dig it up!”
Upon hearing this suggestion—Lin Ning quickly shook his head looking troubled: “That won’t do! If father finds out we stole his wine he’ll surely be upset.”
Lin Cheng rolled his eyes dismissively at him: “You’re such a coward! If you’re too scared then just stay here while Xiu’er and I go!”
Provoked by his brother’s taunt—Lin Ning straightened up defiantly declaring: “Who’s scared? I’ll go!”
Satisfied with this response—Lin Cheng reminded them: “If father finds out don’t blame me!” Both siblings nodded agreeing silently.
Thus filled with excitement yet nervousness—the trio made their way towards Zhu Mei Pavilion.
Before long—Lin Xiu successfully unearthed that jar of Huadiao wine from underground! Overjoyed she instructed cooks to prepare some exquisite side dishes before heading inside Zhu Mei Pavilion ready to enjoy this rare delicacy together! The aroma of Huadiao wafted through air enticingly—the gentle warmth radiating from its orange-yellow hue intoxicated them all! However despite its mild nature—their young bodies couldn’t handle much alcohol; after just two or three sips rosy flush crept onto their cheeks! Just as they reveled blissfully within this tipsy atmosphere—a sudden shout shattered tranquility.
“Such audacity! How dare you steal my Huadiao wine!” boomed Lin Enzhe’s furious voice echoing through space!
Unbeknownst to them—Lin Enzhe possessed extraordinary lightness skill allowing him stealthy approach without sound! Although these three children were young—they had sharp ears yet failed entirely notice his arrival until now!
Startled awake by his reprimand—the siblings’ drunken haze dissipated almost instantly leaving them wide-eyed staring at one another fearfully unsure how respond facing father’s wrath!
Seeing their frightened expressions—Lin Enzhe felt anger subside slightly taking a breath before asking: “Whose idea was it for you three to sneak my wine?”
All three siblings bowed heads silently refusing admit fault clearly terrified under scrutiny! Observing this—Lin Enzhe sighed shaking head saying: “Fine since none will confess—I’ll pose you riddle instead! Whoever answers correctly shall be spared punishment while those unable shall face consequences.”
They nodded obediently acknowledging his challenge; smiling slightly—Lin Enzhe continued: “My first line is ‘The fragrance of wine wafts sweetly.’” He turned expectantly towards Lin Ning awaiting response.
Quickly glancing at both siblings whose faces flushed red struggling think up counter line—Lin Ning chuckled inwardly realizing how simple riddle truly was! After brief contemplation he confidently replied: “Father—I have my answer!”
Eyes sparkling with anticipation—Lin Enzhe urged eagerly: “Go ahead!”
With a smile directed towards lovely face of sister Lin Xiu—Lin Ning recited promptly: “Blush blooms upon fair cheeks like spring flowers.”
Understanding immediately what second brother meant complimenting her beauty—Lin Xiu blushed shyly giggling adorably!
“Excellent!” praised Lin Enzhe nodding approvingly at clever response adding: “Ning’er your line matches beautifully not only structurally but also poetically! Now what about you two?” He turned serious gaze towards Lin Cheng & Lin Xiu whose expressions shifted into anxiousness once again!
Feeling pressure mounting on them both perspiring heavily forehead breaking out sweat while minds blank devoid inspiration—they fidgeted nervously unsure what do next! Just then—a sudden thought struck Lin Ning prompting him speak up boldly addressing father: “Father may I offer answer on behalf elder brother & sister? If my response pleases you—I hope you’ll spare them punishment!”
Surprised momentarily by request—Lin Enzhe hesitated then relented nodding slowly saying: “Alright I’ll grant opportunity.”
Inwardly thrilled seizing chance presented before him—Lin Ning steadied himself announcing confidently: “My second line is ‘Sweetness lingers thickly like festive flavors.’”
Upon hearing this response—a hint of approval flickered across Lin Enzhe’s face nodding appreciatively admiring cleverness behind choice! Without pausing further he continued speaking rapidly: “Third line goes ‘In snow intoxicated guests bloom rosy cheeks.’”
At these words—a smile crept onto father’s lips revealing satisfaction evident within gaze directed towards son exuding pride radiating warmth throughout atmosphere surrounding them all!
“Ah Ning’er—you truly possess remarkable insight not only intellect but wisdom beyond years!” exclaimed father beaming brightly causing heart swell joyously within young boy feeling elated knowing efforts acknowledged!
“Does this mean elder brother & sister won’t be punished?” asked hopeful eyes shining brightly anticipating good news!
“Of course,” replied father gently smiling down upon him adding softly: “I always keep my word once spoken—it’s like water spilled cannot be taken back again.”
However turning serious once more he added sternly addressing both siblings directly: “Yet Cheng & Xiu’er must acknowledge areas needing improvement academically henceforth seek guidance from your brother!”
Both felt relief wash over them hearing news yet simultaneously embarrassment crept upon faces realizing shortcomings acknowledged publicly causing cheeks flush crimson!
“Only two days remain until New Year,” continued father firmly stating: “Each must write couplet presenting me your works upon completion deliver directly into my study.”
After departing from father—the trio pondered deeply within Zhu Mei Pavilion struggling formulate ideas until finally inspiration struck!
With determination shining brightly within eyes—Lin Xiu bit down pen thoughtfully exclaiming suddenly snapping fingers saying aloud excitedly: “Got it!” She neatly penned down upper & lower lines along with horizontal inscription reading clearly written words celebrating New Year festivities!
Meanwhile determined not fall behind—Lin Cheng crafted own couplet expressing wishes prosperity joyfully celebrating family unity during holidays too!
Finally turning attention towards youngest sibling who seemed lost deep thought holding brush motionless staring blankly at paper surface before him prompting curiosity arise amongst others wondering what thoughts brewing inside mind?
After contemplating carefully weighing options thoroughly considering every angle possible finally inspiration dawned upon him leading forth creativity flowing freely pen gliding across red paper effortlessly crafting unique composition entirely different than theirs combining elements literature philosophy expressing deeper meanings reflecting aspirations future goals rather than mere festive cheerfulness alone!
Once finished—all three gathered presenting respective works proudly displaying creations exchanged glances filled anticipation awaiting father’s verdict deciding whose composition deemed worthy recognition amongst others!

Eventually focusing attention upon youngest son holding tightly written piece examining closely before announcing aloud triumphantly proclaiming loudly declaring excitement evident throughout room reverberating joyfully echoing sentiments shared amongst family members present witnessing moment unfold right before
On the evening of the first day of the Lunar New Year, outside Ho Chu Garden, the vibrant lights and sounds by the banks of Mo Chou Lake inspired mischief in the hearts of the Lin siblings. They urged their parents, Lin Enzhe and his wife, to take them out to enjoy the night scenery of Jinling. The couple agreed to their children's request. The three siblings left Ho Chu Garden and wandered towards Xuanwu Lake, where the atmosphere was bustling with excitement.
Suddenly, Lin Cheng pointed ahead and exclaimed to Lin Ning and Lin Xiu, "Look! Isn't that our father's Xuan Yu Sword on that man’s back? Oh no, someone has stolen our father's sword!" Lin Ning and Lin Xiu followed Lin Cheng's finger and indeed saw a man in front of them carrying the Xuan Yu Sword on his back. The three quickly rushed up to confront him.
The man appeared to be in his fifties, with a broad face and a high forehead. His hair was graying, and his beard was frosty white. Despite his age, he exuded a vigorous spirit and an extraordinary presence. Lin Cheng shouted at the old man, "You bold thief! How dare you steal my father's precious sword? Put it down at once, or I won't be polite!"
The old man paused for a moment before responding, "This sword was left to me by my sworn brothers; how could it possibly belong to your father?"
Lin Cheng retorted, "The patterns on the sheath and hilt of that sword are identical to my father's! Are you really trying to deny it?"
Seeing that the old man refused to admit he had stolen Lin Enzhe's sword, Lin Cheng's anger flared. He swung his fist towards the old man's face. The old man casually flicked his left sleeve, and Lin Cheng felt a gust of wind rush towards him. He quickly dodged to the side, but even so, he felt a sharp pain on his face as if pricked by needles.
Lin Ning recognized that the old man was skilled in martial arts. However, seeing her elder brother suffer made her unable to stand by idly. She dashed forward and executed a move from Tai Chi called "Cosmic Mystery" against the old man. The old man was surprised by Lin Ning's steady and resolute steps despite her young age. Her punches flowed like water, effortlessly delivered. Intrigued, he decided to test her skills without directly engaging her in combat, evading her attacks with ease.
Lin Ning continued her assault for over ten moves. When she unleashed "Once Again Seeing Mystery," she aimed her right index and middle fingers at the old man's Jade Hall point while striking at his waist with her left palm. At the same time, she swept her right leg towards him. The old man raised his left leg to block her sweep and used his left hand to restrain both of Lin Ning's arms. With a gentle push from his left arm and leg, Lin Ning spun 360 degrees under his force but managed to stay upright just in time to avoid falling.
The old man laughed heartily and said with admiration, "Heroes emerge from youth; it seems I am truly getting old. You are quite remarkable for being able to force me into action within twenty moves! Who is your master?"
Lin Ning replied, "My master is my father. Sir, the sword you carry is identical to my father's sword; that's why we stopped you. Please forgive our rashness."
The old man asked, "Is your father Lin Enzhe, the leader of Enze Gang?"
"Yes," Lin Ning confirmed. "Do you know my father?"
The old man replied, "I have not met Master Lin personally, but I have always admired his character. I came to Jinling specifically to visit him."
Lin Ning thought about how formidable this old man's martial arts were; if he intended harm towards her or Lin Cheng, it would be effortless for him. However, seeing that he had a kind demeanor and wished to meet Lin Enzhe made her feel reassured. She turned to Lin Cheng and Lin Xiu and said, "Elder brother, Third Sister, let’s take this kind sir to meet our father."
Curious about the origins of the sword on the old man's back, Lin Cheng and Lin Xiu readily agreed to accompany him.
