"Brother Lu, are you awake?"
Lu Mingyuan had just been contemplating a mutual destruction with the giant python, but in the next moment, he found himself being carried to an unfamiliar place, the sound of rushing wind still ringing in his ears.
Something was wrong; there was danger.
"You slippery snake, don’t even think about—"
He shook and struggled to sit up, the flames on his body not yet fully extinguished. In the next second, a loud slap rang out on his head, completely dousing his fiery spirit.
Qi Xiao leaned closer, squinting at him with a cold expression. "Brother Lu, are you awake?"
Lu Mingyuan paused for a moment and instinctively nodded. For some reason, he felt that if he answered 'no', Qi Shidi might do something terrifying.
After a brief delay of two seconds as his brain caught up, he finally realized something was off. Wait a minute, wasn't I just fighting the giant python? How did I end up here? Did you all rescue me?
Fu brushed off the sparks from his clothes, nearly tumbling off his sword. "Brother Lu, I know you have many questions, but please don’t rush."
"We didn’t die in the mouth of the giant python; we almost got burned to death because of you."
Seeing the panicked expressions of everyone around him, Lu Mingyuan rubbed his head and suddenly felt embarrassed. "I’m sorry, I’m sorry; I didn’t react in time."
After some time of struggling and sporadic sword flight, Qi Xiao and the others finally managed to distance themselves from that area and found a relatively safe place to land.
Fu began explaining the situation to him. Hearing that they had risked their lives to follow him made Lu Mingyuan's eyes turn red with emotion. Especially when he saw Qi Xiao nodding first; he rubbed his hands together, unsure of what to say.
"Qi Shidi, I really don’t know what to say."
He sighed deeply. "I had already prepared myself for death; I never expected you all would actually come back to save me."
In such a short time, having experienced several drastic changes in mindset, even someone as strong-willed as Lu Mingyuan found it hard to process everything. He had brought his disciples out and naturally felt responsible for their safety. However, he never anticipated that after sending this group of Foundation Establishment disciples away, they would be willing to return and rescue him.
While Golden Core and Nascent Soul cultivators still had some fighting power against each other, Foundation Establishment cultivators facing off against Nascent Soul ones were merely appetizers.
They returned, having forsaken life and death.
Lu Mingyuan, at a loss for words, found himself overwhelmed and unsure of how to express his thoughts. Qi Xiao immediately understood what he was thinking and placed a comforting arm around Lu Mingyuan's shoulders, chuckling lightly.
"Reciprocating kindness, Brother Lu, since you are willing to risk your life for us, how could we possibly flee without a fight and leave you to sacrifice alone? We are all disciples of the Xiaoyao Sect; we are all comrades."
Several others nodded in agreement nearby.
As he gazed at their sincere faces, Lu Mingyuan felt a warmth in his heart, and his eyes grew slightly misty. He nodded solemnly and replied, "You are right. Reciprocating kindness—since you all are willing to risk your lives to return and share life and death with me, I too will offer my life in return and treat you with sincerity. From this moment on, you are my family."
Though they called each other comrades, there were always varying degrees of closeness among them, as well as deceitful calculations. Lu Mingyuan did not wish to define them hastily with the term "family." If they were to entrust each other with their lives, it would naturally require the bond of blood and brotherhood.
Upon hearing this, everyone looked around at one another and smiled in understanding.
Qi Xiao took out a few medicinal pills, which Lu Mingyuan swallowed. After a moment of adjusting his breathing, he felt that his internal injuries had improved significantly. He clenched his fists and pulled Qi Xiao into a corner, looking quite regretful.
"If I had known it would come to this, I should have listened to you from the start."
"But Qi Shidi," he continued, "how did you know there would be danger in the Xiaonan Mountain secret realm this time? Do you know something?"
Qi Xiao hesitated; his knowledge stemmed from his previous life. Now that Lu Mingyuan was asking him directly, how could he respond?
He stammered, "I happened to meet a hermit at the market who divined for me..."
Qi Xiao dared not meet Lu Mingyuan's gaze.
Lu Mingyuan did not press the matter further; he patted Qi Xiao on the shoulder. Since Qi Xiao was unwilling to be forthright, he chose not to pry. He understood that there must be some reason behind Qi Xiao's reluctance to speak.
However, this situation was indeed strange. The Xiaonan Mountain secret realm had long been regarded as a training ground by multiple sects. There was even another sect further north that regularly patrolled the area. How could a Nascent Soul-level beast suddenly appear here?
Beasts also possessed intelligence.
The various sects had made it a routine to conduct their trials here, and from time to time, multiple sects would come to sweep through the area. The higher-level beasts, upon catching wind of this, would try their best to avoid the Little Southern Mountain, lest they encounter any conflicts with the disciples of the sects.
Qi Xiao's gaze darkened; this was certainly unusual. That beast was definitely not an ordinary one. Remembering the blood-colored Linglong that had been parasitized by the stone locusts, as well as the illusionary formations that concealed the snake swarm, Qi Xiao felt that there were too many signs of human involvement here. If it were unintentional, it would be one thing, but he feared that someone was deliberately targeting their Xiaoyao Sect.
Lu Mingyuan's expression shifted slightly as he nodded in agreement. Regardless of the circumstances, upon our return, I must report this to the sect so that the elders can investigate thoroughly. If there are indeed cultivators intentionally seeking revenge against our Xiaoyao Sect, arranging for a Nascent Soul-level beast would not be the work of an ordinary cultivator. Even if the two of us were to confront them, we would likely face dire consequences; it is better to let the sect handle this.
Qi Xiao nodded in understanding; I think so too. After resting for a while, everyone turned back and left. The flying boat stopped outside Little Southern Mountain.
Su Lingyue held a communication jade talisman in her hands, her expression grim. "Master, Qingxu Zhenren, and esteemed elders, I am an unfilial disciple who failed to bring back Senior Brother Lu. He has likely perished alongside the beast." The earth-shattering roar echoed in everyone's ears; they all heard it clearly. It must have been Senior Brother Lu who delivered a fatal blow to that beast at the end of his life.
It was their fault that Senior Brother Lu sacrificed himself to pave a way for them. The few disciples who had left with Qi Xiao were also likely...
Su Lingyue's eyes darkened as she knelt down, pressing her forehead to the ground. Tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollably. "I have failed; I watched helplessly as Senior Brother Lu and my fellow disciples sacrificed themselves without being able to do anything. Please punish me, Master."
A faint shadow rose from the jade talisman, revealing the grand hall of Xiaoyao Sect where the Master and elders were gathered. Upon hearing her words, their expressions turned serious.
Qingxu Zizi cleared his throat and said, "Child, what exactly happened? Speak from the beginning." When they heard about everyone getting lost in an illusionary formation and encountering a Nascent Soul-level double-winged serpent, even the elders who had been seated suddenly stood up in shock.
