Elder Chang had been at the Nascent Soul stage for many years. Although demon cultivators were generally stronger than their counterparts at the same level, he should still be able to hold his own against them due to his cultivation base. However, all the disciples were horrified to discover that the seemingly invincible Elder Chang was being overwhelmed by a half-step Nascent Soul Ice Serpent!
Elder Chang dodged an attack and turned around, shouting angrily, "You all need to run! Notify all the disciples, the trial is over!"
The disciples awoke from their daze and fled in panic. Seeing their hard-earned food escape, the serpent became enraged and intensified its assault.
Qi Xiao's expression darkened as he emerged from a corner, picking up Ji Linglong and turning to run. A battle at the Nascent Soul stage was not something a mere Golden Core cultivator like him could participate in, especially with such an abnormal beast!
This reminded him of the situation in Little South Mountain, making his face grow even grimmer.
"Take care of Ji Linglong first; I’ll go back and check things out."
Tong Liu immediately grabbed him. "Senior Brother Qi, we can't participate in a Nascent Soul battle! We should hurry back to Xiaoyao Sect for help!"
Qi Xiao shook his head. "Elder Chang must have called for help before this. What we need to do is buy him some time."
He couldn't help Elder Chang withstand the beast's attacks, but he could create some chaos on the sidelines.
Tong Liu felt Qi Xiao's reasoning made sense. Elder Chang had looked after them for so long; how could they just stand by and watch him get bullied?
"Elder Chang!" a disciple exclaimed as they looked up, only to see that the brown figure had been struck by the Ice Serpent's headbutt and was sent flying. The impact shook the ground as he embedded himself into a rock, spitting out a mouthful of blood.
He looked into the distance and shouted again, "Run! Quickly!"
Many disciples' eyes turned red with anger as they wanted to rush forward to rescue Elder Chang but were held back by their companions.
Qi Xiao shouted loudly, "If you charge in like this now, what do you think will happen? You'll just be cannon fodder!"
One disciple couldn't help but glare at him fiercely. "How long have you been at Qingxuan Peak? You have no feelings for it, so of course you can say that!"
Although Qingxuan Peak had always been at the bottom among the peaks and was looked down upon by others, Elder Chang usually maintained a serious demeanor. But all the disciples knew that if they were bullied by those from other peaks, Elder Chang was their only hope for support.
He was their backbone and support—not quite a master but better than one.
If Elder Chang died, who would care about Qingxuan Peak anymore?
"If you won't go, then I will! I absolutely cannot just watch as Elder Chang sacrifices himself to save us!"
A weak female voice softly spoke up.
"I'll go too."
Ji Linglong's face was pale as she tried to sit up, needing the support of a disciple beside her.
Watching this group of frail and injured individuals, Qi Xiao scratched his head, feeling increasingly irritated.
Damn it, had he known it would turn out like this, he wouldn't have gone there no matter what!
He pulled out several bottles of healing elixirs from his jade ring and explained, "These are some healing potions. Those who are injured should rest here for now; I'll take some people over to check things out."
Ji Linglong propped herself up and couldn't help but retort, "Hmph, this is all your fault! If you hadn't lured us there, how could we be in this situation? You still have the nerve to lead us?"
Qi Xiao snorted coldly. "If it weren't for your greed, would you have fallen for the trap and come here willingly?"
As soon as he said this, the disciples who had been fuming with anger suddenly looked guilty and scratched their faces.
That was true; although Qi Xiao had thrown out bait, he hadn't forced them. They had come running on their own accord.
Even so, the thought of helping Qi Xiao out of trouble for nothing made Ji Linglong's eyes redden with anger.
She shot him a glare and said, "I’ll remember this. When we get back, I won’t let you off so easily!"
"You caused this mess; you need to take responsibility and fix it! Hurry up!"
She turned over in a huff, turning her face away from Qi Xiao.
The remaining disciples who weren’t seriously injured hesitated for a moment but ultimately chose to follow Qi Xiao as he left.
Qi Xiao paused his steps, leaving behind some capable disciples to guard the injured while he quietly slipped away with another group through the side.
The group split into three paths, each disciple receiving something from Qi Xiao's hands.
"If you see any movement from the jade talismans, immediately throw these things out."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
As the jade talismans lit up, a series of firecrackers exploded against the body of the Xuanbing Jiao.
While this wouldn’t cause it any real harm, it certainly enraged the creature.
It twisted and turned in fury, roaring as it sought out those hiding behind the scenes.
But before it could locate them, water balls struck its eyes one after another, drowning it in a cacophony of buzzing sounds.
Though these insects were weak, their small size made them difficult to swat away; even if one was killed, more would just emerge.
The object that had just struck its eye was filthy, impossible to wipe off, and emitted a strange sensation of pain and itchiness, as if it were slowly corroding its eye. The Xuanbing Jiao could no longer endure it; it thrust its head through the stone cave and plunged into the dark river, shaking its head incessantly.
However, the black substance was particularly stubborn and wouldn’t wash away, especially with a swarm of insects buzzing around its ears. Unable to bear it any longer, the Xuanbing Jiao swam several miles toward the great river in the northeast. The louder the insects buzzed, the faster it swam. Finally reaching the riverbank, it dove in and took a refreshing bath.
“Elder Chang, let’s hurry!” Qi Xiao and another disciple quickly helped Elder Chang to his feet. Elder Chang coughed up a mouthful of blood and shook his head. “I’m fine; you need to quickly notify the remaining disciples to leave.”
They hadn’t gone far when they encountered the sect leader coming toward them. Seeing everyone’s grimy faces, especially Elder Chang’s—his clothes tattered and bloodied—it was clear they had gone through a fierce battle.
“Elder Chang! Was it that Xuanbing Jiao that injured you like this?” Fan Wuyou exclaimed in shock. Elder Chang sighed and nodded. “That beast went berserk for some reason; even I, at the peak of the Nascent Soul stage, couldn’t suppress it, despite it being only at the Half-Step Nascent Soul stage!”
“How could this be?” Fan Wuyou wanted to ask more questions, but Elder Chang gave him a knowing look. Realizing what was needed, Fan Wuyou immediately called for all disciples to leave.
Not far away, a flying boat was docked, and several other disciples were already waiting aboard. Qi Xiao hurriedly assisted Elder Chang onto the boat. Fan Wuyou instructed all disciples to rest while he took Elder Chang back to his quarters to help him recuperate.
Once inside the room, Elder Chang spat out another mouthful of black blood, which surprisingly swirled with strands of demonic energy. “Sect Leader, that Xuanbing Jiao has been corrupted; there must be demons behind this!”
