As the two were about to turn around, a deep, resonant male voice suddenly rang out.
"After you struck, you left quite swiftly. Aren't you afraid of being targeted for doing so?"
Qi Xiao turned his gaze toward the source of the voice and saw a figure in a black robe that had appeared on the eaves of the house without a sound. They hadn’t sensed his presence at all just moments before.
He stepped forward slightly, positioning himself in front of Lu Mingyuan.
If human desires seek to kill me, then I can only respond with death. Does the senior really think that after they attacked, I should just wait obediently?
That notion was rather absurd.
The man shook his head with a soft sigh. "Youth is often brash. Those people were only sent to test you, but you killed them all and created a deadly feud. I cannot simply ignore this."
Qi Xiao narrowed his eyes slightly, observing carefully.
At the moment the man finished speaking, a faint ripple of spiritual energy emanated from him.
Clearly, he possessed formidable strength and abundant spiritual energy, yet the fluctuations were minimal—this was clearly a deliberate practice of some secretive technique.
He was either an assassin or a shadow guard!
A smile crept onto Qi Xiao's lips as he chuckled freely.
"So it’s an assassin from the Storm and Rain Tower! Whatever they offered you, I’ll double it!"
The man paused in surprise and shook his head slightly. "Eating from one plate while serving another is not how loyalty works. Since I’ve taken their money, I cannot serve two masters. Regardless of the circumstances, I must bring your head with me!"
So it really was an assassin from the Storm and Rain Tower!
Qi Xiao felt a weight settle deeper in his heart, though he still maintained a smile on his face.
"No room for negotiation?"
The man hesitated for a moment before continuing, "However, since this young man beside you didn’t make a move, I can spare him."
Lu Mingyuan's eyes widened in disbelief, his face flushed. "Pah! Am I some coward who would flee at the last moment? If you want to kill him, you'll have to get through me first! Stop babbling nonsense here."
The man sighed softly as killing intent began to rise within him. "Since you refuse to recognize danger, then I shall show no mercy."
Qi Xiao quickly stepped in front of him and interrupted urgently.
"Wait! If you're going to kill me, at least let me understand why. I'm new to this Jin City and have no idea how I've offended you."
Lu Mingyuan chimed in beside him. "Exactly! My junior brother is always reasonable. Even if there’s some conflict between you two, it must be your fault first. You've been talking for so long without even giving your name?"
Assassins value speed and precision; killing was their only goal. Revealing one’s identity would only complicate matters unnecessarily.
Seeing the man pause in his movements and remain silent for a long time, Qi Xiao let out a cold snort.
"You don’t even dare to give your name? Are you trying to concoct an excuse to rob and kill?"
"It's strange," he continued. "When I was killing them, you didn’t show up; only after they were dead did you appear. It looks very much like black eating black."
"Since that's the case, what are you still doing here pretending?"
The man spoke in a deep voice, "I'm only stating the truth."
"If it's really the truth, then what's your name and who do you work for? Is that so hard to answer? If you can't say, then just forget it, but showing up late like this is quite ridiculous."
Qi Xiao stroked his chin and suddenly exclaimed in realization. "You don't have a grudge against them, do you? So you took this opportunity to come late and try to set them up? Tsk tsk, your heart is rather dark."
The man grew anxious. "Don't spout nonsense!"

"Of course I didn't intend to trap you with just this drug," Qi Xiao replied casually. "But don't worry; reinforcements will arrive soon."
The man struggled to open his eyes and realized that the young boy had already launched a signal flare at some point.
Bright red smoke filled the air; it wasn't loud but was certainly eye-catching. He didn't know if this signal flare would attract reinforcements, but he was certain it would bring the Golden Armored Guards. At that point, what awaited him wouldn't be just a simple fight.
His heart raced as he turned to leave, but just as he took half a step, a barrier formed from spiritual energy sprang up from the ground, blocking his path.
Qi Xiao and Lu Mingyuan stood aside watching the spectacle unfold with amusement.
"Since you're here, don't be in such a hurry to leave; I'm not dead yet."
The man gritted his teeth and glared at him coldly. "You're asking for death!"
This formation barrier wasn't particularly strong, but it caught him off guard. He didn't understand formations and could only channel all his spiritual energy to break through it.
As he did so, several spirit stones around him exploded one after another.
Qi Xiao's expression changed drastically as he grabbed Lu Mingyuan and tried to escape. But the man in black had already leaped toward him with an outstretched palm!
The blow landed squarely on Qi Xiao's chest, sending him flying like a kite with its string cut.
Lu Mingyuan's eyes turned red as he shouted, "Junior Brother Qi!"
As the man attempted to strike again, a sharp sword was aimed at his heart, and a golden-armored guard stood in front of him, coldly staring him down.
The assassin from Wind and Rain Tower dared to commit murder in the city, showing utter disregard for us in Jin City!
A loud explosion echoed as the second signal flare shot into the sky. This was a signal flare exclusive to the golden-armored guards, indicating that they were in a critical situation. Once this flare was fired, nearby guards would rush to their aid.
If he stayed any longer, he would find himself surrounded by the golden-armored guards. Taking on one or two might be manageable, but facing the majority would escalate matters beyond control. Even with his formidable skills, escaping would be difficult.
The man turned and hurried to leave but was blocked by several golden-armored guards working together. Instantly, a fierce battle erupted between the two sides.
Lu Mingyuan quickly helped Qi Xiao up from the ground. "Junior Brother, are you alright?"
Qi Xiao wiped the corner of his mouth, looking somewhat pained. He had only intended to buy some time for the golden-armored guards to deal with his opponent. However, this person's strength was far beyond what he had anticipated; just stalling for a brief moment nearly cost him his life.

When Qi Xiao opened his eyes again, he had no idea how much time had passed. The sky had darkened, and lanterns flickered with light.
The street outside was now filled with dozens of guards, all on high alert.
