Elder Wang laughed, saying that all the credit was due to him, while he had merely done some trivial things.
"Not at all, the head of the family is truly too modest," came the reply.
Elder Wang's unusual behavior raised suspicions; he must have had ulterior motives. However, his persistent persuasion soon wore down Bai Shu, who became increasingly annoyed. Since Elder Wang insisted so much, it would be inappropriate for Bai Shu to refuse again. "This time, I will handle it myself."
With a cheerful smile, Elder Wang escorted Bai Shu to the entrance of the tunnel. Once Bai Shu left, his expression darkened immediately. No matter how much he wanted to take credit, he wouldn't risk his life for it. Since Qi Xiao spoke so confidently, it might be better to let Bai Shu give it a try. If Qi Xiao dared to deceive him...
Well, by then, he would probably have turned into a puddle of blood.
The stone door rumbled open. Upon seeing the familiar face outside, Qi Xiao's heart sank; this time, he truly couldn't muster a smile. Dealing with that old man Wang was manageable since the old man only considered profit and held no personal grudge against him—he could still exchange a few words with him. But Bai Shu genuinely wanted to kill him!
Given the chance, even without a reason to kill, Bai Shu could easily fabricate one.
Qi Xiao forced out a couple of awkward laughs. "The real person is busy with countless matters; do you really have time to step into such a shabby place?"
"No need for more nonsense," Bai Shu interrupted coldly. "You’re in my hands now; you definitely won’t live!"
"Tell me," Qi Xiao continued with a forced grin, "are you planning to let me personally carve you up and then send you into the blood pool? Or will you obediently jump in yourself?"
His eyes flickered as he realized both Elder Wang and Bai Shu emphasized the word "obedient." Was this sacrifice conditional? Did it require someone to willingly comply?
Qi Xiao smirked slightly. "You jest! I’m quite stubborn and don’t respond well to force. You can certainly carve me up directly, but there’s no way I’ll willingly step into that blood pool!"
Bai Shu's gaze turned icy. "Oh? You think I wouldn’t dare to act?"
"I know you want to kill me," Bai Shu continued, "but do you really have the guts? Aren't you all eager for my sacrifice? If I die, how can you make me willingly offer myself?"
Bai Shu furrowed his brow slightly; his anger began to fade as his eyes grew deep and contemplative. "Elder Wang treats you differently—he even told you about this matter. It seems Elder Wang has taken a liking to you."
Qi Xiao chuckled mischievously. "I barely know Elder Wang; how could we talk about liking or disliking? I'm just useful to him."
"I just shared a secret with him, and immediately Elder Wang brought you here."
Tsk, it seems that the relationship between the Real Person and Elder Wang is rather ordinary.
Bai Shuo narrowed his eyes slightly. "Don't think you can play tricks. Do you really believe that with just a few words, you can sow discord between us?"
Qi Xiao pulled at his lips in silence. "Sow discord? The Real Person might be overestimating the bond between you two. From what I see, the Real Person treats Elder Wang with familiarity, but Elder Wang may not truly regard you with sincerity."
"Why did you bring the Real Person here right after I mentioned that matter?"
Bai Shuo's gaze was deep and inscrutable. He knew this brat was trying to tease him, yet he hesitated.
Elder Wang is someone to be wary of.
"Speak up. What exactly did you tell him?"
Qi Xiao spoke until his mouth was dry, then recounted what he had said earlier.
After listening, Bai Shuo lowered his head in contemplation for a moment. Just when Qi Xiao thought he had managed to fool him, a cold laugh pierced the air, and a chilling sword light pressed against his neck, drawing a line of blood.
"Do you really think I wouldn't dare to kill you?"
"What do you mean by that, Real Person?"
Qi Xiao swallowed nervously, his eyes fixed on the sword.
Bai Shuo's expression was icy and fierce. "Do you think I'm like that old fool named Wang? My Bai family has been a prominent lineage of cultivators for generations, with deep roots. How could I be deceived by your mere words?"
"Talk of hunting, of supplementation, of pursuit—it's all nonsense! You don't want to die, so you're deliberately deceiving that old fool!"
At this point, Bai Shuo's anger flared even more.
That old immortal might be foolish enough to get himself into trouble, but to hear of danger and want to use him as a scapegoat!
If this matter were false, it would be fine; but if it were true, wouldn't he have nearly been harmed by that old immortal?
All this time, although he harbored dissatisfaction towards the surname Wang, he hadn't taken any drastic actions.
For that old fool to scheme against him like this—truly courting death!
It seems my plans need to be expedited!
Isn't that old fool always yearning for the resurrection of that demon?
Then why not destroy both of them together? If they die on the same day, it would fulfill that old fool's long-held wish.
Bai Shu's expression changed several times, revealing a captivating intensity. Qi Xiao quietly lowered his head, concealing the emotions on his face. Although he had failed to deceive Bai Shu, his earlier words had already sown seeds of distrust in Bai Shu's heart.
Bai Shu was known for his ruthless nature; how could he allow others to manipulate him without retaliation? As long as the two of them were at odds, Qi Xiao still had a chance.
After pondering for a while, Qi Xiao suddenly heard a loud clang as a sword was thrown to the ground. He paused, and then saw a flash of silver light as the ropes binding him were also undone. Bai Shu looked at him coldly.
"You are indeed clever, no wonder you could cause my son to die with regrets! Since you have given me this information, I will grant you one chance to die more painlessly. You pride yourself on being a righteous cultivator, don’t you? Take that sword and kill the demon."
Qi Xiao was taken aback. Seeing him frozen in place, Bai Shu felt displeased. "What’s wrong? Did I not make myself clear? Do you need me to assist you further?"
As Bai Shu’s spiritual energy surged in his hand, Qi Xiao quickly picked up the sword from the ground, adopting a compliant demeanor. He cautiously asked, "Are you referring to the demon?"
Bai Shu scoffed. "Do you really think that person resembles any righteous individual just because he has returned in this manner?"
"Of course not! I’m just a bit surprised. The demon race has been extinct for a thousand years; how could they possibly—"
"You don’t need to pretend to inquire about things in front of me. As a disciple of the Xianyao Sect, haven’t you heard any rumors? Even if you haven’t caught wind of anything, you should have guessed what happened on Floating Island by now."
"Since you've come to this secret chamber, I find it hard to believe that you haven't considered this angle."
Qi Xiao fell silent for a moment, unsure whether to praise the man for being straightforward. He had indeed guessed some things, but the demon race had always been taboo; he never expected Bai Shu to speak so boldly and directly about it.
"If you want to know, I might as well tell you directly. A thousand years ago, although the demon race suffered a great defeat and was sealed away by everyone’s combined efforts, just before their collapse, some clever demons had already left their pieces in the human realm in anticipation of the future—just like my Bai family."
Though Qi Xiao had sensed this possibility earlier, hearing Bai Shu state it so plainly still left him in shock.
So the demons in the ice coffin are the ones who perished in battle a thousand years ago?
