What about the spirit beasts?
Spirit beasts are similar to divine beasts, but they do not hold divine positions. They are more akin to rare spiritual treasures and spiritual plants found in the world, gifts from heaven and earth to the living beings here. Qi Xiao remembered that spirit beasts were named so because of their high intelligence and the auspiciousness they brought.
These spirit beasts can extend life and heal serious ailments, attract wealth and treasures, and bring good fortune in times of danger. They embody fragments of the will of heaven and earth; destroying them would cause some harm to the heavenly path. However, as long as time passes, once heaven and earth have healed, these spirit beasts will be reborn.
What the demon clan truly wishes to destroy is not us, but the path that gives rise to us! Qi Xiao had begun to believe this in his heart.
"Senior, when you mention the path, do you mean..."
"I do not know; I only see in the dark that our connection to the heavenly path has been severed. The heavenly path is blocked by a thick black mist, seemingly trapped in slumber. This situation has persisted for a long time. While I do not know how this will ultimately evolve, I understand that it certainly signifies some kind of calamity for humanity!"
"But that group of demons has extracted my soul and trapped it here. Although I know one thing, it is difficult for me to convey it to others."
Qi Xiao was filled with confusion. "Senior, if that group of demons wants to destroy you, then by extracting your soul, haven’t they already succeeded?"
"Why do they still need to manipulate your body to demand human sacrifices, drawing the attention and caution of cultivation sects? Isn’t that riskier?"
"Firstly, this is a significant matter; the demon clan does not wish to expose themselves excessively and can only use your hands to kill me. Secondly, they also want to trap me. Divine beasts are born from heaven and earth; after death, they return to heaven and earth. However, that group of demons uses my name to control my body, causing me to become tainted with murderous resentment. This is equivalent to defiling my divine path and destroying my virtue—heaven and earth will loathe me!"
"When I die, not only will I be unable to return but I will also become a vengeful dragon roaming the world, bringing additional disasters. The corpse dragon at the bottom of the water, tainted with resentment—wasn’t it just like this?"
"Having already nurtured that vengeful dragon's ferocity, how could they expect it to die peacefully? Reluctantly, they can only perform water rituals again to quell its resentment."
"That vengeful dragon has been dead for many years; it has lost its soul but has gained intelligence after being nourished by resentment over time. Even if you have divine-level cultivators among you, it would be quite difficult for you to deal with it."
"After all, it possesses the body of a divine dragon; even if its strength is diminished significantly, it is still not something cultivators like you can handle."
Hearing this, Qi Xiao's brows furrowed deeply.
"Do you have a solution, Senior?"
"Let me out. After all, it was once my body. As long as I emerge, I can still control it."
Qi Xiao felt a slight tightening in his heart.
Though he believed the words of this dragon spirit were true, it was still a former overlord. If its corpse was so difficult to deal with, how much more so its soul? What if they released it and the dragon spirit suddenly turned against them?
The events from a thousand years ago were poorly documented. Even if this spirit spoke with conviction, it was still just one side of the story.
As Qi Xiao racked his brain for a more secure way to handle the situation, a female voice drifted closer to him from afar, as if piercing through layers of water.
"Qi Xiao, wake up! What are you dazing off for?"
With a loud rip, the void before him seemed to tear apart like a broken scroll, scattering into fragments. The golden dragon slowly coiled back onto the stone wall. However, before it completely merged with the wall, it spoke.
"You must release me before that cursed dragon appears; otherwise, it will be too late."
Qi Xiao hurriedly asked, "May I ask how to release you?"
"Remove the six soul-fixing nails from my body."
With a loud smack, Ji Linglong slapped Qi Xiao on the head, leaving him dizzy.
The girl in white stood with her hands on her hips, visibly displeased.
"I've called you so many times, and you ignored me on purpose, didn't you?"
Rubbing his head, Qi Xiao winced.
Her strength was truly formidable; one slap had brought him back to reality.
He couldn't help but chuckle bitterly. Was there a possibility that he really hadn't heard her?
"What are you talking about? You're such a big person standing here; could you be deaf?"
She exaggeratedly covered her mouth and looked around in alarm. "No way! Just coming out for a trip and you're already disabled? Does that mean I'll be first in line for the inner sect next time?"
Qi Xiao gritted his teeth, unable to suppress a twitch on his forehead.
"You're dreaming!"
Ji Linglong crossed her arms and let out two cold laughs.
"What happened to you just now?"
Qi Xiao raised her chin, urging her to look at the mural on the wall.
Ji Linglong glanced at it a couple of times but couldn't discern much. She vaguely recognized that it was a mural depicting a divine dragon, with many mortals and cultivators praying for blessings.
She replied irritably, "What, is there some old thing in there that snatched your soul?"
Qi Xiao swiftly tapped her on the head and then quickly distanced herself, bowing repeatedly toward the mural.
"Forgive me, forgive me, esteemed Divine Dragon! I’m not familiar with this woman."
"If you have a grudge, take it out on her alone; it has nothing to do with me!"
Ji Linglong covered her buzzing head, furious. "Qi Xiao, what’s wrong with you? Are you possessed? Just because of this old thing, you're hitting me?"
Qi Xiao was quick to cover her mouth, forcing her to bow three times while ignoring her struggles and dragging her away from the mural area.
Once she released her grip, Ji Linglong glared at her angrily. "You let me bow to some deity, and now you want me to bow to that wicked old thing? You have to give me an explanation!"
Qi Xiao chuckled coldly. "I’m doing this for your own good. If you don’t appreciate it, just wait and see how you regret it."
After Qi Xiao finished explaining what had happened, Ji Linglong's expression changed dramatically as she rushed back to the mural area and pulled out a pile of items.
She set out several spirit fruits and, lacking candles, used luminous pearls instead. Kneeling on the ground, she bowed repeatedly.
"Forgive me, forgive me! Please don’t hold my offenses against me, great Dragon God! Don’t be as petty as I am."
Qi Xiao didn’t idle either; she sent a message to Master Qingxu.
Upon hearing the news, Master Qingxu was stunned for a long time.
Elder Chang stepped forward to ask, "What’s wrong?"
Master Qingxu's face appeared even more wrinkled and aged as he sighed deeply. "Back then, so many immortal sects gathered and didn’t notice anything unusual; they unjustly killed a good dragon and played right into the hands of the demon clan's plan. Not only that, but they also trapped the dragon soul for a thousand years—this is truly our fault!"
Elder Chang was taken aback by his words and couldn’t help but feel heavy-hearted as well.
