The mother and daughter exchanged a glance, their faces revealing a hint of excitement. Could it be that the old man was also an immortal?
"Er Niu, quickly kneel down! We are fortunate to meet an immortal; hurry and kneel to ask for blessings, and to cure the ailments afflicting you."
Elder Huang chuckled heartily, gently waving his sleeve. A gentle breeze stopped the two from kneeling and lifted them up lightly.
Seeing this, their excitement grew even more.
Elder Huang smiled humbly. "Please, do not elevate me. I am merely a cultivator, not an immortal."
"But any cultivator is still an immortal in our eyes," they thought. To them, immortals could ride the wind and change forms at will; if a cultivator could do the same, then what else could they be but an immortal?
The farmer woman patted her daughter's head. "Er Niu, quickly kneel down and plead with the immortal."
"Wait, wait! There’s no need for that," Elder Huang interjected.
After a pause, the farmer woman hesitated before explaining their situation. Her daughter had been frail since childhood, plagued by minor ailments and serious illnesses. They had tried countless medicines but could not strengthen her body. Recently, she had developed a strange condition known as "withered bone syndrome."
As she spoke, tears welled in the farmer woman's eyes. She carefully rolled up her daughter's pant leg to reveal her calf, which was thin and shriveled, with only a layer of skin remaining—looking as if it would break with just a few steps.
The farmer woman wept bitterly as she knelt before Elder Huang, pleading for help.
Feeling compassion, Elder Huang agreed to take a look. After some contemplation, he discovered that the girl had likely fallen victim to a certain beast that fed on blood and flesh.
There was a type of nightmare beast that consumed human flesh and left victims in such a state while also creating illusions that left them unaware of what had happened.
"From your appearance, it seems you accidentally encountered it one day and fell under its spell without realizing it due to the illusions," he explained. "I will give you a bottle of healing medicine and write you a prescription to replenish your energy and blood. As long as you take it regularly and nourish her over time, she will eventually recover."
"However, this nightmare beast is dangerous; once it has tasted blood once, it often follows the scent for another meal. So keep this little girl away from deep mountains and forests."
The farmer woman felt both guilty and grateful upon hearing this; she nodded repeatedly in acknowledgment.
After receiving the medicine, she fidgeted with her hands, her expression shy as she wanted to invite Elder Huang to their home for a meal.
Elder Huang remembered his purpose for coming here and hesitated to accept, wanting to refuse. But then the girl tugged at his sleeve and softly pleaded with him.
"Grandpa Immortal, we are just an ordinary family and have nothing to repay you with. The only thing we can offer is this meal. Please give us a chance to show our gratitude."
The little girl, no more than five years old, was adorable and innocent, her words polite and thoughtful despite her tender age.
Elder Huang furrowed his brow, sensing something unusual. He looked at the girl's delicate face and quickly shook his head, dismissing his concerns as overthinking.
Although this girl was physically incomplete and had been earning money alongside her mother from a young age, it was understandable that she had matured faster than her peers.
"Grandpa Immortal, are you hesitating because something is wrong?"
Something wrong?
He squinted, pondering for a moment, realizing that his mind seemed a bit foggy.
He had come here to find someone.
Who was he looking for?
Elder Huang slapped his forehead, suddenly recalling.
He was here to find an old friend.
Since he was looking for an old friend, it made sense that he would want to catch up. There was no harm in taking some time for reminiscing; it wouldn’t go against the wishes of this mother and daughter.
Having thought this through, Elder Huang smiled and agreed.
The girl clapped her hands joyfully and danced around him in circles.
"Grandpa Immortal agreed! Grandpa Immortal agreed!"
"Grandpa Immortal, our home is just ahead. We'll be there quickly once we enter the city. Hurry up!"
Elder Huang stroked his beard, chuckling as he followed along. However, he couldn't shake the feeling of unease; despite the sun shining brightly and warmly, he felt a chill creeping over him as if shrouded by ominous clouds.
Suddenly, a deafening crash echoed as a sharp beam of sword light struck ahead, sending dirt and stones flying into the air, creating a cloud of dust.
The spot where the mother and daughter had just stood was now a large crater.
Elder Huang's heart raced as he hurried to check on their condition when another thunderous roar erupted at his feet.
Suppressing his murderous intent, he turned coldly to see that the sky had darkened without him noticing. A monstrous figure with wings spread wide and horns atop its head hovered in midair, surrounded by a swirling black mist.
Its wings stretched out to two or three yards wide, towering several yards high; it loomed above like an ominous shadow, exuding an aura of world-destroying power.
Elder Huang's eyes turned bloodshot with rage as he summoned his spirit sword, gritting his teeth.
"You monster! They are nothing but defenseless commoners! Why do you seek to harm them?"
The air seemed to warp for a moment, causing the towering demonic statue to sway slightly, as if it had transformed into something else in that instant. The overwhelming demonic energy made it impossible for Elder Huang to see clearly.
He heard the demon leader let out a sudden, boisterous laugh, wild and unrestrained. "I can kill whenever I want; what will you do about it? Not just you, but all of you shall die! Soon, my demon realm will descend, and this entire continent will become our hunting ground."
With a wave of his hand, several figures shrouded in swirling demonic energy appeared behind him. Each of these beings had green faces and sharp fangs, their grotesque appearances eliciting immediate revulsion. They gathered densely in the sky, laughing and chatting freely, looking down at Elder Huang as if he were a cornered rat.
"Don't you want to take revenge for them? Why haven't you made your move yet?" A sinister chuckle echoed. "Ha! Just a bunch of cowards pretending to be righteous. Since you fear death so much, why not kneel and sincerely beg us? We might just let you go."
"Ha! Coward! You can hardly even lift your sword now!"
A cultivator's words about killing enemies were nothing but a joke. The cacophony of mocking voices grew louder around him, and Elder Huang's grip on his sword trembled slightly, filled with murderous intent.
He wanted to kill them! He had to kill this group of demons!
"Demon leader, you all shall die!"
"Qingxu Zhenren, get out of the way! Elder Huang has gone mad!"
Qingxu Zhenren sidestepped and flicked his dust whisk, the resilient white threads immediately binding both him and the sword together. No matter how much Elder Huang struggled, he could not break free.
"Demon! I will kill you all! I must kill you all!"
The other elders exchanged glances, showing a hint of helplessness. After a moment's contemplation, Qingxu Zhenren decisively struck him down with a palm strike.
Elder Chang looked at the black lotus emerging from countless cracks, threatening to engulf the entire city. His expression turned serious. "It seems these things are quite peculiar."
