The three major sects arrived one after another.
Qi Xiao and Ji Linglong bowed respectfully to the elders present, while Li Jinyuan, the leader of the Qianyuan Sect, waved his hand dismissively.
"This matter is of great importance, so let's skip the formalities. Please tell us everything that has happened here," he urged.
When it came to this issue, no one understood it better than Qi Xiao. Upon hearing about the various crimes committed by the Baiyun Palace, the masters and elders were filled with fury.
"You are truly foolish! It has protected your Jiangling for years and ensured the prosperity of your Baiyun Palace. Even your founding ancestor became a powerful figure thanks to its guidance and blessings. Under its protection, Baiyun Palace may not have achieved fame throughout the cultivation world, but at least it could have continued for generations. Yet now, you have ruined all of that!"
The faces of the Baiyun Palace elders turned pale, their eyes filled with regret. One elder couldn't help but let out a bitter laugh.
"Li Zong comes from a great sect and possesses extraordinary talent; it's hard for him to understand the thoughts of us ordinary cultivators.
Clearly, we are all human beings, yet some are born as swans, blessed with fortune and destined for greatness, while others toil their entire lives only to remain as mere sparrows, unable to escape their small corner of the world.
If not for the unfairness of heaven that divides people into ranks at birth, why would we associate ourselves with the demon clan and commit such heinous acts?
What has transpired today is merely our defeat; why must Li Zong say more? If you want my life, take it! But if you ask me if I regret it, I will never regret!"
Li Jinyuan's expression turned cold; he was momentarily at a loss for words in response to the elder's resolute stance.
The elder let out a cold laugh and struck his own forehead, ending his own life.
Before he drew his last breath, he looked up at the sky with an unwilling gaze and whispered, "I do not regret."
"Ah, Elder Li, why are you so foolish?"
"Elder Li, there’s no need for this!"
His decisive action brought immense sorrow to many Baiyun Palace elders. As they watched Elder Li's fate unfold, it was as if they were witnessing their own demise.
Elder Luo's eyes turned bloodshot as he stood up with a determined demeanor.
"Everyone! We have already aligned ourselves with the demon clan. Today, with all four major sects gathered here, they will not let us go. Rather than waiting for them to strike us down, we should drag them down with us!"
Elder Luo's spiritual energy surged around him as his robes billowed dramatically; a powerful aura emanated from him that blinded those present.
Seeing him like this, many Baiyun Palace elders rose in unison to join him, vowing to fight until the end.
"With both sect leaders here as our companions in death, our demise is not in vain!"
"Get out of here!"
The leaders of Qianyuan Sect and Tianyan Academy acted quickly to suppress their spiritual energy flow, but it only bought them a few more seconds.
A deafening explosion erupted at the peak of Baiyun Palace, shaking the ground and mountains. Several elders at the Golden Core and Nascent Soul stages self-destructed, creating a small crater at the summit. The shockwave flattened everything within several miles.
Crackling sounds followed as several disciples' protective artifacts and spiritual shields shattered one after another. Qi Xiao climbed up from the ground, spitting out a few mouthfuls of dirt, finally managing to regain some composure. The force of the explosion had been overwhelming; although he had dodged quickly, his internal organs were still reeling from the impact, blood surging through him.
For a moment, his vision blurred, and he nearly thought he would meet his end there.
Ji Linglong had just gotten up when she hurriedly searched for Qi Xiao. "You little brat, are you alright?" She had been a beat too slow; it was Qi Xiao who had pulled her away to safety. If anything happened to him because of her, she would dig up those old fossils and fry them in oil!
Qi Xiao coughed a couple of times. "I'm fine." He vaguely felt something wet at the corner of his mouth, wiped it with his hand, and looked at his fingertips stained with blood. "Oh, just coughed up a bit of blood."
"You..." Ji Linglong choked on her words, staring at him as if she had seen a ghost, hesitant to continue. Was it normal for someone to be so calm after spitting blood?
Qi Xiao took out two pills and swallowed them before sitting down cross-legged to adjust his breathing.
Ji Linglong cautiously poked him with her finger. "Are you really okay? You just spat blood! You’re not... dazed from the explosion, are you?" This guy seemed clever enough; if his brain was damaged from the blast, it would truly be her fault.
Qi Xiao pulled a wry smile but chose not to respond to her.
Amidst the dust and smoke, two figures slowly approached. The two esteemed members of the sect who had previously appeared graceful and dignified now looked disheveled and covered in dirt.
Li Jinyuan tugged at his lips, nearly bursting into curses. It was Song Maoyan who managed to comfort him with a smile, barely pulling him back from the edge of frustration.
He stood with his hands clasped behind his back, his expression extremely grim.
Why did he have to resort to self-detonation while talking? It wasn’t like he intended to do anything to them! It made it seem as though he had forced these people to their deaths.
Heaven bear witness, he had never thought of such a thing; he still wanted to interrogate them. But now, before he could even ask a question, the person was dead.
Sigh, what a waste of effort; it almost cost both of us our lives.
How could it be considered a waste? Although the people from Baiyun Palace had died, there were still two knowledgeable individuals left here, weren’t there?
Song Maoyan walked over to them with a warm smile. Qi Xiao noticed him and immediately stood up to bow.
Song Maoyan waved his hand repeatedly. “That’s enough; you’re injured, so there’s no need for formalities.”
“I want to ask you both, how much do you know about what happened here?”
The peak center had been reduced to ruins, with only a few halls remaining in the remote outskirts, one of which was the Medicine Hall. The two sect leaders were concerned about too many eyes and ears around and decided to find a place to talk; some disciples and elders were injured and needed to recuperate.
Inside the Medicine Hall, many disciples from Baiyun Palace were detained. Upon seeing them approach, their faces turned pale with panic, and they fell silent, uneasy.
They had always prided themselves on being righteous disciples, but suddenly learning that the people from Baiyun Palace were affiliated with the demonic faction made it difficult for them to adjust. The recent explosion only added to their anxiety.
If those elders had been forced to death, what would happen to them? What fate awaited them?
Song Maoyan looked at them, feeling somewhat troubled. He pulled Li Jinyuan aside and whispered. “These disciples are unaware of the situation; we can just have them remove their disciple tokens and disperse.”
However, some among them must have participated in this matter. If they mixed those involved with innocent disciples and let them go together, it would be problematic.
For instance, how many disciples had been secretly taken away for blood sacrifices during their closed-door training on Tianyang Peak? From forging images to taking people away for disposal—there were certainly more than a thousand disciples who met a tragic end.
It was impossible that such a large operation could have been carried out without some disciples being involved.
While the two were whispering, one disciple suddenly knelt down and began to cry. “Please, esteemed seniors, see clearly! We knew nothing of the evil deeds committed by Baiyun Palace!”
