"To think that saying just a couple of words could be so effective. I should give it a try someday; I haven't had my fill of Master Brother's antics yet."
Lu Mingyuan felt heartbroken and utterly disappointed. "Qi Shidi, I never expected your awareness to be so limited; it truly disappoints me."
Lu Mingyuan howled a couple of times but didn't cry, instead opting to dab a bit of saliva at the corners of his eyes.
Seeing him like this, Qi Xiao looked down at him, somewhat speechless. "The act has gone on long enough."
Lu Mingyuan, in disbelief, replied, "Qi Shidi, you actually think I'm acting? It seems you completely fail to understand the feelings I share with Zhao Shixiong."
Qi Xiao nudged him with his elbow, urging him to tone it down.
But Lu Mingyuan only got more into character, his voice rising. "Just as Zhao Shixiong feels, so do I. In this lifetime, I am willing to dedicate myself to the Xiaoyao Sect!"
At that moment, Elder Chang's voice suddenly rang out. "I didn't expect there to be such sincerity within our Xiaoyao Sect. Since you are so earnest, I shall fulfill your wish."
Lu Mingyuan trembled all over and turned around to see Elder Chang approaching slowly, speechless in shock. "Elder... Elder Chang, you have arrived?"
He elbowed Qi Xiao and whispered through gritted teeth, "Why didn't you call me when the Elder came?"
"Wasn't it you who didn't call?" Qi Xiao thought to himself. It was clear that Lu Mingyuan was too engrossed in his role to pay him any mind.
Elder Chang smiled warmly. "I heard all those heartfelt words you spoke just now; they truly moved me. Were those words sincere?"
Lu Mingyuan awkwardly chuckled and forced himself to say, "Of course they were sincere."
Elder Chang stroked his beard and nodded in satisfaction. "Not bad! Young disciples like you are rare indeed. If every disciple of our Xiaoyao Sect were like you, how could we not prosper?"
Though the words were directed at Lu Mingyuan, his gaze was fixed on Qi Xiao.
Qi Xiao felt a shiver run down his spine and quickly stepped back while hugging his arms, suddenly feeling a wave of goosebumps.
"Elder Chang, why are you looking at me like that while speaking?"
Elder Chang cast him a lingering glance that seemed tinged with some grievance. He snorted coldly.
"Unworthy disciple! Look at others and then look at yourself! Others from Qingyang Peak may be few in number, yet even Lu Mingyuan has such awareness. And what about you? In this vast inner sect, as the Master Brother, you spend your days idly without a shred of responsibility!"
Sighing deeply, he continued, "I entrusted the inner sect to you; at this rate, it will surely fall apart!"
Qi Xiao couldn't help but smile at the corner of his mouth. Wasn't the inner sect's senior brother all about who wins and who takes the position? Perhaps he wouldn't even have time to settle in before someone else pulled him down. What kind of responsibility was being discussed here? Did they want him to care for his junior brothers and sisters while also keeping an eye out for being dragged down by them?
He took a couple of steps back and spoke up to refuse. "Elder Chang, please speak plainly." He was tired of this kind of talk; he couldn't decipher the old man's thoughts.
Seeing his lack of cooperation, Elder Chang's eyes darkened with more resentment. He clasped his hands behind his back and sighed skyward. "Look at Zhao Yu from Qingyuan Peak, then look at you, my obedient and sensible disciple. Why do I never get any of them here?"
Hearing the name Zhao Yu again made Qi Xiao's forehead twitch, as if it might explode. It was strange; one after another, they kept mentioning Zhao Yu in front of him. Were these two conspiring against him on purpose?
Qi Xiao hugged himself tighter and replied softly, "Even if there are, they might not be willing to come. Just look at Qingxuan Peak and then look at you."
He scanned Elder Chang from head to toe, shaking his head with a sigh. "Why is one an elder while the other is the sect leader? The gap between people is just too vast."
Elder Chang's face flushed with anger; he could barely hold himself together. This kid actually dared to mock him? "Do you have any idea how many Nascent Soul cultivators there are in this realm? And how many have reached the peak of Nascent Soul? There are definitely no more than ten with my level of power!"
"Elder Chang, don't be anxious. I'm just speaking casually. But no matter how powerful you are, you can't compare to the sect leader; that's a fact," Qi Xiao replied.
Elder Chang shot him an angry glare. "Are you looking for a beating?"
"Hey, Elder, I'm just following your lead here. Why is it that only officials can set fires while commoners can't even light lamps?" Qi Xiao retorted.
"Hmph, lighting lamps? I think you're trying to set me on fire!"
Qi Xiao chuckled. "Elder Chang, you're overthinking things."
Elder Chang shot him a disgruntled look but decided not to engage in banter anymore. He straightened his chest, clasped his hands behind his back, and wore a serious expression.
"I came today for an important matter."
"Another thing for me?" Qi Xiao's face showed reluctance as he hesitated to speak.
"The last time you said that, you sent me to Jiangling, and it turned into some nonsense about Baiyun Palace and Divine Dragons. I just got back and haven't even rested for two days yet..."
"Enough with the complaints! This matter is different from last time."
Elder Chang spoke slowly.
It turned out that Qi Xiao had been away from the sect for too long and was unaware of many things. During this time, disciples from various peaks had been preparing.
Preparing for what?
Elder Chang glanced at him. The matter regarding Liu Qingfeng had already reached the inner circles of the sect. With Elder Huang vouching for it, after discussions among us, we all believe that this trip to the secret realm holds great value. After all, it is an ancient battlefield from a thousand years ago; if we can find something valuable, it would strengthen our Xiaoyao Sect.
Qi Xiao's mind raced as he processed this information, feeling a bit incredulous. "Elder Chang, you can't be thinking of taking us disciples along, can you?"
"Why not?"
Qi Xiao scratched his head, hesitating. It wasn't that he didn't want to go, but considering how difficult it would be for them to venture there alone, bringing them along seemed reckless.
"Heh, I just think my life is more important," Elder Chang replied, annoyed at Qi Xiao's lack of ambition but not truly angry.
"Rest assured, we have already discussed this with Liu Qingfeng. You won't be sent into unfamiliar territory. If you stay at the periphery of the secret realm, there are some things there that should be useful to you."
"What do you mean by that?" Lu Mingyuan interjected. "Qi Shidi, don't you know? That area from a thousand years ago once attracted heavenly punishment. Although it has been sealed off now, the heavenly thunder inside has not dissipated; it has been trapped there for a millennium and has formed its own thunder array."
"If you can draw in the thunder to temper your body, it should greatly benefit your meridians and foundation. Haven't you always been troubled by your narrow meridians and wanted to widen them with external force? Heavenly thunder is the best refining substance; rather than risking using those medicinal pills, why not directly draw in heavenly thunder into your body?"
Lu Mingyuan patted Qi Xiao's shoulder with sincere eyes, but upon hearing the words "heavenly thunder," Qi Xiao's brows twitched and his tone wavered.
"Do you really think I can withstand the tribulation of those ancient warriors from a thousand years ago?"
