The phone was quickly unlocked, and Lin Yuan always applied what he learned from the system. He had installed a small software on his phone.
On the screen was a hooded figure leaning against a wall, their face obscured. If nothing unexpected happened, it should have been taken with the original camera.
"Show me," a woman snatched the phone and eagerly began to browse through the photo album. However, apart from some landscape pictures, there was nothing else. After searching more carefully, she realized that the contents of the phone had likely been cleared by someone—most probably by Zhong Tiantian herself.
"There’s nothing here."
"What if we can’t find anything? Does that mean my daughter is just gone?" She sat there in a daze.
Zhong Tiantian's father pondered for a moment before saying to Lin Yuan, "Our daughter has a close friend; should we ask her to come over?"
Team Leader Zhang nodded and asked for the friend's name and school before making a call. Since Lin Yuan was somewhat involved in this matter, he was held back by the father until Zheng Yunyin arrived, which eased things a bit.
"Our consultant still has matters to handle; please wait here for a moment. I will be back soon." This was true because Mr. Zhu on the other side had spoken up.
As Lin Yuan walked towards the interrogation room, he felt a slight headache coming on. He could understand the pain of losing a daughter, but often, the useful information extracted from such situations was minimal.
Seeing his expression, Zheng Yunyin smiled helplessly. "Some parents are indeed like this; you’ll get used to it. That Mr. Zhu is relatively honest; he speaks the truth."
Based on what they had said, some leads were found. However, the chances of locating them were slim.
"Thank you." Lin Yuan felt bitter inside.
After all, those who had systems took their time solving issues one by one; he had stirred up public anger instead. However, crime was different from other matters; if given a choice, he would still place all these cases within the police intranet. It was every citizen's duty.
In the interrogation room, Mr. Zhu glanced around anxiously and noticed that the young officer who had arrested him seemed to be missing.
"Officer, I’ve said everything I needed to say. I should be able to leave soon, right? This situation doesn’t really concern me."
"Just wait a moment. We still need your cooperation to catch the person we're after."
After his confession, the officer's attitude improved somewhat.
Over the past few days, Lin Yuan had been in and out of the interrogation room countless times. He skillfully pushed open the door and nodded at the officer before taking a seat alone.
"Hello, I haven't introduced myself yet. My name is Lin Yuan, and I'm a consultant for the district police station."
"Hello, nice to meet you."
Zhu felt a bit surprised that the police consultant was so young, but he also sensed that Lin Yuan seemed different from the other officers.
For instance, his skin—wasn't it a bit too dark?
But then again, he was part of the police department; perhaps he just liked to spend time outdoors.
"I've reviewed all the clues you provided. Could you tell me again how you got to know him?"
"I contacted him through a website. At that time, I was under a lot of psychological pressure and was just looking to pass the time."
"The website you mentioned isn't some obscure one; it's mainly for high-end activities that various business owners participate in."
"For example, he is passionate about horse racing."
"Who introduced you to this website? Besides this encounter, have you had any other interactions elsewhere?"
As Lin Yuan continued questioning, Zhu began to think.
"I haven't seen him in person outside of the website. Our first interaction was when I was short on cash; at that time, my shareholders wanted me to step down."
"This company is something I built on my own. These shareholders only hold small stakes—why should I give up my position?"
"However, at that time, I simply didn't have enough funding; I'd borrowed everything I could, but it still wasn't enough."
Lin Yuan nodded.
"Now, answer my first question."
"Oh right! The website was introduced to me by a partner. I still remember the URL; I just wrote it down for you."
"On this website, besides the person you mentioned, do you know anyone else?"
"Yes, Mr. Wang from Jiangshan Technology is my friend."
"Mr. Wang?" Lin Yuan asked, puzzled.
"You've heard of Jiangshan Supermarket, right?"
He mentioned a name that was well-known in Haishi's business circles; Lin Yuan naturally recognized it.
"It turns out he's quite a big boss," Zhu continued. "He's also on that website and is reportedly a member as well. I’m not sure about his current status since we haven't been in touch for years."
"It’s not that he doesn’t want to keep in contact; it’s just that our differences have grown too vast over time. If it weren't for that website, he wouldn't even know I was there."
"Alright, you’re not hiding anything from me, are you?"
"No, absolutely not."
"According to our police department's records, you are married and have two children. We have notified your wife to come over, so you should be able to get out soon."
"Huh?"
At this point, he began to feel anxious. His marriage was more of a business arrangement. Although he had been somewhat unfaithful, he had managed to keep it under wraps for the past few years. This situation couldn’t be exposed! Even if someone came to bail him out, they would need to contact his family.
Lin Yuan handed over the matter to another officer and requested the website address. He wasn't sure if the people behind it would shut down the site immediately, so it was best to act quickly and hope he wasn’t too late.
Meanwhile, on the other side, family members typically arrived during the day. However, Yuan Xiao's parents didn’t show up until around seven or eight in the evening. Through the thick glass window, their anger seemed ready to spill over.
"Please calm your emotions and don’t act impulsively in the police station," an officer advised, noticing their agitation. Yuan Xiao was somewhat aware of her parents' feelings, so she spoke up.
"Okay, officer, we just want to talk to her."
Watching her parents put on a friendly facade for outsiders left Yuan Xiao feeling numb. Once the officer left them alone for some privacy, her mother began to scold her in a low voice.
"You ungrateful girl! How could you get yourself into such a mess? Do you even know if your brother is still alive?"
"If you wanted to die, why didn’t you do it cleanly?"
Yuan Xiao listened coldly as her father chimed in with accusations.
"For a poor boy, you dared to keep this from me for so long? I should have made you marry earlier! How could you think about men like this?!"
"Did that old hag give you a lot of benefits? Money too?"
They refused to believe that their daughter was responsible for any of this chaos. "What about those hotel parties? They don’t come free!"
"That girl must have been used by someone else! That outfit they found costs thousands!"
"You’re already in this mess; all the money in your account should be saved for your brother. Hurry up and tell us the password!"
