This child is mine and Gao Jian's.
My relationship with Gao Jian is not good; to be precise, it's terrible. He either touches me once every ten days or half a month, or he gets drunk and frantically forces himself on me. There were times when I ended up bleeding. I never expected that under such circumstances, I would still become pregnant.
I touched my belly, feeling a whirlwind of emotions.
I had been tutoring Jiao Feng, and things were going increasingly well. One day after class, he insisted on keeping me for dinner. I can't cook, and neither can he, nor did he want to go out to eat. After rummaging through the fridge for a while, I finally found some vegetables.
"Let's make do with this," I said with an apologetic smile. "Next time, I'll make something delicious for you."
"What else can Teacher Ma cook that's delicious?" Jiao Feng asked as he helped me prepare the vegetables.
"A lot," I replied with a smile. "When I was little, my parents wouldn't feed me, so I secretly cooked for myself."
"Back then, there weren't many ingredients—just potatoes. With a bit of oil and salt, I could eat two bowls of rice."
"Really?" Jiao Feng exclaimed in surprise. "Then I definitely have to try it!"
I smiled without saying anything further.
After we finished cooking, Jiao Feng exaggeratedly sniffed the air and said, "It smells amazing! Teacher Ma, you're really impressive!"
I felt as if I had returned to my childhood when someone used to praise my cooking too. Despite the hardships, I found joy in the compliments; it felt like happiness to me.
After we finished eating, Jiao Feng suddenly asked, " Teacher Ma, why are you marrying Gao Jian? You’re not after his money, are you?"
I blinked and joked lightly, "Because I love him."
Jiao Feng's expression stiffened. "Love?"
"Is he worth your love?"
I didn't expect that my joking remark would matter to him so much. He curled his lips and drove me back home.
This time, I went to Gao Jian's parents' house. I hadn't been there for three consecutive days, and mother Gao was furious again.
When I arrived, it was already past eleven. As soon as I stepped inside, mother Gao slapped me across the face.
"Do you even see me as your mother-in-law?"
"Three days without coming home, are you trying to rebel?"
I remained silent and knelt on the floor to wipe it clean. There was too much water, and I accidentally splashed some onto mother Gao's clothes.
mother Gao exploded in anger, raising her foot to kick me. "You little wretch, I think you're doing this on purpose!"
I wasn't prepared for it and fell sideways from the kick, my head hitting the corner of the table, causing blood to gush out immediately.
"I'm bleeding... I'm bleeding..." I panicked.
"You shameless thing, bleeding is what you deserve!" mother Gao tried to kick me again, but father Gao held her back.
"Enough already, hurry up and take her to the hospital before someone dies," father Gao said impatiently.
At the hospital, the doctor informed me that I had miscarried.
Gao Jian's parents' expressions changed; they stopped making sarcastic remarks and hurriedly arranged for my discharge.
My body was growing weaker by the day. With nowhere else to go, I went to Jiao Feng's house.
Jiao Feng was playing a game when he saw me come in and asked in surprise, " Teacher Ma, what's wrong?"
I looked pale, with blood on my forehead. "It's nothing, just feeling a bit unwell."
Jiao Feng furrowed his brows. "What exactly happened?"
I brushed it off lightly. "I had a miscarriage."
The mouse in Jiao Feng's hand fell to the floor with a thud.
He stared at me blankly for a moment before finding his voice again. "M- Teacher Ma, what did you say?"
"I said I had a miscarriage." I forced a smile, trying to reassure him. "It's fine, don't worry."
Jiao Feng's face turned ashen as he suddenly stood up. "How can this be fine? Wait here, I'm taking you to the hospital!"
"No need." I shook my head. "It's too late; let's do it another day."
"That's okay." Jiao Feng grabbed a jacket and draped it over my shoulders. "I'll go with you to the hospital tomorrow."
"No need," I said softly. "Just focus on your classes."
