The knowledge points coming from the teacher's mouth felt like a foreign language to me. At first, I thought it was just that the teacher was speaking too quickly for me to keep up. But when I tried to work through a practice workbook during self-study, I realized I couldn't even understand the simplest elementary school word problems. The concepts discussed in class were completely beyond my grasp. I rubbed my temples, feeling a bit of a headache coming on. I decided to head to the restroom to splash some water on my face and wake myself up a bit.
As I reached the restroom door, I heard Lin Shuqin's voice from inside: "Are you dead? Can't you hide?"
Another girl's voice came through, trembling with tears: "Sister Qin, I didn't mean to..."
"I told you to bring me cigarettes, and you brought chocolate instead?"
"Sister Qin... I was too scared..."
Lin Shuqin let out a cold laugh: "Scared? What do you have to be scared of?"
"Do you believe I’ll tell your mom about this?"
The girl quickly pleaded, "No, please don’t tell her..."
Lin Shuqin scoffed: "Then next time, bring me cigarettes."
"I still haven't settled the score for this time; you broke my watch. What do you plan to do about it?"
I pushed open the restroom door and walked in. Lin Shuqin turned to glare at me, her eyes filled with hostility: "What are you doing here?"
I walked over to the sink and washed my hands before approaching the girl. I took off my jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
Lin Shuqin immediately rushed over and shoved me aside: "What are you doing?!"
I ignored her and bent down to pick up my jacket.
The girl handed it back to me: "Sister, I'm not cold; you should wear it."
I insisted, putting the jacket back on her: "Just wear it; don’t catch a cold."
Lin Shuqin was fuming beside us: "Cui Shan! Didn’t you hear what I said?!"
I turned to her and asked, "What did you just say?"
Lin Shuqin's face flushed with anger. "I said, mind your own business!"
I smiled and replied, "Did your parents spend money to send you to school just so you could bully your classmates?"
She retorted angrily, "What does that have to do with you?"
I crouched down and wiped the tears from the girl's face. "Classmate, what's your name?"
The girl whispered, "My name is Ma Yuan."
I took out a tissue and handed it to her. "Don't cry. How are your grades?"
Ma Yuan nodded. "They're pretty good."
"Then can you help me with some tutoring?"
Ma Yuan looked at me in surprise. "You want me to tutor you?"
I nodded. "I just transferred here, and I've forgotten a lot of what I learned before. I was hoping you could help me catch up."
Ma Yuan hesitated. "But Sister Qin..."
I raised an eyebrow at Lin Shuqin. "If she dares to cause you trouble, just come find me."
Ma Yuan nodded. "Okay, after the quiz, I can sit next to you and help you study."
I patted her shoulder. "Thank you."
Ma Yuan smiled back. "No need to mention it."
As we walked out of the restroom, Lin Shuqin caught up with us. "Where's Xue Ming?"
I replied, "He went to the bathroom. Why?"
Lin Shuqin looked around anxiously. "He’s been in there for a while? How long has he been gone?"
I checked my watch. "It's been over twenty minutes. Are you looking for him for something important?"
Lin Shuqin stamped her foot in frustration. "Doesn't that mean he heard everything...?"
After school, Xue Ming insisted on sharing a ride home with me.
Lin Shuqin called out to him, "A Ming, wait up!"
Xue Ming stopped and looked at her. "Is there something you need?"
Lin Shuqin bit her lip, hesitating. "Can we talk?"
After a moment's hesitation, Xue Ming followed her into the garden.
Lin Shuqin's voice was carried by the wind. "A Ming, what does she have that I don't?"
Xue Ming's voice was soft, fragmented by the breeze. "Shuqin, I've realized that I only see you as a sister."
Madam Xue suggested finding a piano teacher for me.
Xue Ming interrupted her. "Mom, don't bother; Shan Shan doesn't like the piano."
I was slightly taken aback. He actually remembered that I didn't like the piano.
