His internal strength was profound, making him more perceptive than the average person. He had encountered Song Feiwan twice—once at the medical clinic and again in a narrow alley—leaving a deep impression on him.
Thus, even amidst the bustling street filled with chatter, laughter, and vendors calling out, he quickly distinguished Song Feiwan's voice. He unconsciously halted his steps and looked ahead.
There were no girls with their hair styled up; all the faces were masked, making it impossible to identify which one was Song Feiwan. But even if he could recognize her, there was no way he could chase after her.
Finding his momentary pause somewhat ridiculous, he curled his lips and was about to step forward when he heard a voice exclaiming, "Master, I knew you wanted to visit the lantern festival! In such a lively place, wouldn't it be a pity not to take a look?"
Zhuo Er misinterpreted his hesitation and shouted loudly. Nan frowned slightly.
Zhuo Er approached and lowered his voice, saying, "Recently, the Ministry of Justice has been thrown into chaos by us. That dog official Rong Jiayi doesn’t have time to trouble us. Isn’t such a great occasion worth celebrating?"
"Master, I’ve never been to a lantern festival before. Since we’re in the capital this time, we should follow local customs!" Zhuo Er said eagerly, switching to speaking in Northern Rong dialect to avoid running out of words.
Unfortunately, Nan merely raised an eyebrow mockingly and replied: "I am originally from the Great Zhou. What does following local customs have to do with me?"
Zhuo Er's heart sank as he hung his head in despair. To his surprise, Nan suddenly changed direction and headed towards the lantern festival!
Zhuo Er froze for a moment before his eyes lit up, scampering after him eagerly.
Zhuo Da watched the entire scene unfold with a helpless shake of his head. Among the three of them, Zhuo Er was the most enthusiastic.
Listening to a vendor’s introduction, he learned that couples would wear masks while visiting the lantern festival to facilitate meeting their desired partners. If they grew closer over time, they would eventually remove their masks.
If the words are inappropriate, leaving while wearing a mask would not tarnish one's reputation. Zhuo Er immediately bought three masks in one breath, eagerly watching the other two put them on. After they were done, he glanced at Nan and then at Zhuo Da, saying, "Why does the master look so much better in a similar mask than you do?"
Zhuo Da, who had been silent all along, felt a vein throb at his temple and retorted angrily, "You’re no better than the master!"
Nan ignored their bickering and donned a white wolf mask as he walked deeper into the lantern festival. After passing through the most crowded area, the path opened up considerably.
On either side of the road were various stalls: riddles, juggling acts, monkey shows, and blacksmithing. Nan felt rather uninterested. Although he had only about three years of memories, he couldn't shake the feeling that he had seen many more interesting and grand scenes than this.
A voice reached his ears—Song Feiwan's: "There’s a stall selling hairpins up ahead; let’s go take a look." Her voice was soft amidst the noisy crowd, but he instantly discerned her direction.
Looking up, he saw her in a plain dress with a slim waist, adorned only with a red hairpin. She wore a fox mask with a white base and red patterns that covered her face almost entirely, revealing only a pair of dark, clear eyes. She was holding the hand of another woman dressed in red as they moved forward together.
A group of people approached from behind, and not wanting to be touched by others, Nan followed the flow of the crowd. During this time, his gaze occasionally drifted toward Song Feiwan.
The distance between them grew smaller and smaller. Song Feiwan's companion was distracted by a jade stall and let go of her hand to take a few steps away. Instinctively, she reached back for support.
By chance, her hand caught Nan's instead. Behind the white wolf mask, the man raised an eyebrow slightly as his gaze darkened. Song Feiwan halted her steps, and he followed her lead as they moved forward together.
