Emily stepped into a wider corridor, the walls around her gradually shimmering with a faint silver light. She had a feeling that these glimmers were not random; they seemed to change with her footsteps, as if something was silently watching her. This sensation sent a chill down her spine, yet she felt compelled to keep moving forward.
“Look!” Lulu exclaimed, pointing ahead with astonishment. “What is that?”
Emily looked up and saw a vast circular space ahead. In the center was a pool of clear water, its surface glowing softly with a silver hue, reminiscent of moonlight cascading down. The water was calm and still, but oddly enough, countless glowing orbs floated around the pool, each seemingly containing some mysterious essence.
“This is the Memory Pool,” Pipi whispered, awe flickering in her eyes. “I’ve seen descriptions of it in the Moon Codex. They say it holds everyone’s most precious memories.”
Emily approached the edge of the pool and gently reached out to touch one of the glowing orbs. As her fingers made contact, images began to emerge within the sphere—a little girl in a floral dress chasing butterflies in a garden, sunlight filtering through the leaves, filling the scene with laughter and joy.
“Is that… me?” Emily gasped, her eyes widening in surprise.
“Look over there!” Lulu jumped to another orb, excitedly shouting, “This one shows you and your grandmother baking cookies in the kitchen!”
The image within the orb revealed a warm kitchen where Emily and her grandmother were busy baking cookies. Flour was scattered everywhere, but both wore smiles of pure happiness; her grandmother laughed like a child while Emily beamed with carefree joy.
“These are my memories,” Emily’s voice trembled slightly. “I thought I had forgotten some of them.”
“Memories never truly disappear.” A gentle voice suddenly echoed throughout the space, bringing an indescribable sense of tranquility.
The three turned to see a woman in a silver gown standing by the pool's edge, her eyes shimmering with soft light. Her hair flowed like starlight, and her eyes resembled two gentle stars watching over them. She exuded an aura akin to that of a guardian existing beyond time and space—mysterious yet welcoming.
“I am the Memory Guardian,” she said with a warm smile, her tone soothing and peaceful. “Welcome to the Memory Pool.”
Emily immediately felt an indescribable sense of familiarity, as if she had found a certain warmth in the guardian's gaze. She gently bowed, showing her respect. "Hello, I am Emily. We are here to find my grandmother."
"Emily," the guardian's voice resonated softly, carrying an inexplicable understanding. "I know you are looking for her."
Emily was taken aback, her heart racing, and her eyes involuntarily glistened with tears. "Can you help me see her?"
The Memory Guardian approached the edge of the pool and gently touched the water's surface. The water rippled slightly, emitting a soft glow as the memory orbs began to move slowly, as if responding to her call. "The Memory Pool can reveal the most precious moments in anyone's heart. If you wish to see a specific person, you can do so through the memories here. But to find her, you must pay a price."
"What price?" Emily asked, feeling a wave of anxiety wash over her.
"Exchange it for a precious memory," the guardian replied without hesitation, "and it must be one that you cherish the most."
Emily's heart skipped a beat. She gazed at the floating memory orbs around her; each orb held countless emotions and recollections. The thought of giving up any one of them felt like severing a part of herself, causing a pang of pain in her chest.
"Can I see these memories?" Emily asked softly, filled with reluctance.
The guardian smiled gently and extended a hand, waving it lightly. All the memory orbs floated slowly before her. Scenes unfolded in front of Emily's eyes. She saw herself as a child planting flowers in the garden with her grandmother, heard stories told during rainy days while they huddled in the attic, and remembered how her grandmother stayed by her bedside when she was sick, eyes filled with concern and love. She also recalled learning to ride a bicycle with her grandmother standing behind her, gently supporting and encouraging her…
Each frame was so warm; the grandmother in those memories remained loving and kind. Every recollection felt like the most precious treasure in her life—impossible to part with, impossible to forget.
"These are your happiest moments with your grandmother," the Memory Guardian said softly. "Choose one memory to give up, and you will be able to see her. But remember, once you give it up, that memory will disappear forever."
"Disappear forever?" Pipi exclaimed in horror. "Emily, wait! These memories are too precious; can’t we think of another way?"
"Yes, these memories are irreplaceable," Lulu added, her face filled with concern. "Grandmother wouldn't want you to forget these precious moments just for a fleeting meeting."
Emily gazed at the memories, her heart feeling as if it were being torn apart. Each fragment was something she couldn't let go of, something she couldn't part with. Taking a deep breath, she suddenly noticed a particularly bright memory orb, radiating a brilliance that outshone the others.
It was the scene from her sixth birthday when her grandmother first taught her how to make a birthday cake. That day, her grandmother was especially joyful as they mixed flour and cracked eggs together. Though they were clumsy and flour was scattered everywhere, that simple happiness was forever etched in her heart.
"This one," Emily said, pointing at the memory orb with determination in her eyes. "This is my most treasured memory. Letting it go might be the best way for me to get what I want."
"Emily!" Pipi exclaimed in surprise. "That's your favorite memory! Are you sure you want to give it up?"
"Exactly because it's my favorite," Emily replied with a faint smile, "I am more willing to sacrifice for it. Grandmother once told me that true love is being willing to give up the most precious things for others."
A glimmer of appreciation flashed in the guardian's eyes as he nodded. "You understand very well. So, are you sure you want to use this memory to exchange for a chance to see your grandmother?"
Emily took a deep breath, feeling the resolve within her, and nodded gently. "I am sure."
The guardian extended his hand, taking the shining memory orb and placing it gently into the pool. The orb slowly melted away, and the surface of the water emitted a dazzling light, as if the entire pool had awakened, swirling with even brighter radiance.
"Close your eyes," the guardian whispered. "When you open them again, you will see the person you long to meet most."
Emily closed her eyes, feeling a warm glow enveloping her as if she had entered a dreamlike world. When she opened her eyes again, the sight before her left her momentarily stunned—
