"Mu Bai!" I shouted hoarsely, frantically looking around.
The medical hall was in disarray; there was no sign of the child anywhere. My heart felt like it had plunged into an icy abyss.
Li Chengzhi's face turned ashen in an instant. He spun around and barked, "Someone! Search! Dig three feet into the ground if you have to, but find Mu Bai!"
The guards obeyed his command and quickly disappeared into the various corners of the hall. My legs went weak, and I nearly collapsed to the ground, fear and helplessness enveloping me tightly.
Li Chengzhi was quick to support me. " Qingwan, don't panic. I will definitely find Mu Bai."
I pushed his hand away and stumbled out of the medical hall, searching desperately for any trace of Mu Bai.
Time passed agonizingly slowly, and my heart grew heavier with each second. Where would Liu Wan'er take Mu Bai? What would she do to him? I couldn't bear to imagine it.
Suddenly, a faint sound of crying reached my ears. Following the sound, I saw a small figure being dragged away, disappearing around the corner of a distant alley.
"Mu Bai!" I cried out in anguish and exerted every ounce of strength to chase after them.
The alley was dark and damp, filled with a putrid smell that hung in the air. Ahead, I could hear Mu Bai's cries growing closer. I dared not stop; my child was waiting for me.
"Mother! Save me!" Mu Bai's voice echoed nearer and nearer.
I turned a corner and finally saw Liu Wan'er dragging Mu Bai along, with two men in black following her closely behind.
"Liu Wan'er, let go of my child!" I shouted angrily as I rushed forward.
Liu Wan'er let out a cold laugh, pulling a dagger from her bosom and pressing it against Mu Bai's neck. "One more step closer, and I'll kill this little bastard!"
Her voice was icy and piercing, sending my heart racing into my throat. I abruptly halted, afraid to make any sudden moves that might provoke Liu Wan'er and endanger Mu Bai.
"What do you want?" I asked cautiously.
"What do I want?" Liu Wan'er's eyes were filled with madness. "I want to destroy what you cherish most, just like you destroyed everything I had!"
"I haven't destroyed anything of yours," I replied through gritted teeth, trying to reason with her despite my fear.
"Shut up!" Liu Wan'er snapped fiercely. "You're just a lowly commoner, a substitute! If it weren't for you, Brother Cheng Zhi wouldn't have turned his back on me!"
I looked at her twisted face and at Mu Bai who was crying incessantly; my heart raced as I said through clenched teeth, "Liu Wan'er, I've never wanted to reconcile with Li Chengzhi."
"Stop pretending!" Liu Wan'er spat through gritted teeth. "Today, you'll experience the pain of losing your loved ones!"
With that, she raised the dagger as if to stab Mu Bai.
"No!" I screamed in terror and instinctively rushed forward.
At that critical moment, a figure suddenly stepped in front of Mu Bai.
Blood splattered as Li Chengzhi let out a muffled groan, dropping to one knee. The dagger was deeply embedded in his shoulder, and bright red blood stained his clothes. Liu Wan'er stared wide-eyed, unable to believe what she was witnessing. She clearly hadn't expected Li Chengzhi to take the blow for Mu Bai.
With a piercing scream, Liu Wan'er commanded the two men in black, "Quick, kill her!" The two men charged towards me. Just then, the officials finally arrived at the scene, surrounding Liu Wan'er and the black-clad men tightly. Both Liu Wan'er and her accomplices were firmly restrained, leaving them with no chance of escape.
Li Chengzhi released Mu Bai, who rushed towards me. I held him tightly as tears streamed uncontrollably down my face. "Xiao Bai, my child, are you alright?" Mu Bai's small face was pale as he clung to my neck. "Mother, I'm scared." I stroked his back softly, whispering words of comfort, "It's okay, Mother is here."
Li Chengzhi knelt on one knee, blood dripping from his arm. He gritted his teeth against the pain and said to the guard beside him in a low voice, "Take Liu Wan'er away and keep her under strict watch." Liu Wan'er struggled wildly, her eyes filled with resentment. I held Mu Bai close, avoiding her gaze.
Once everyone had left, I quietly said to Li Chengzhi, "You need to come back with me; I'll bandage your wound." With that, I carried Mu Bai towards the medical clinic. Behind us came Li Chengzhi's footsteps—heavy and slow.
Back at the clinic, I treated Li Chengzhi's injury. He winced in pain but remained silent. I bit my lip and softly said, "Thank you for saving Mu Bai." Li Chengzhi shook his head. "It was what I should have done." After that, silence fell between us.
" Qingwan, I..." He began but I interrupted him. "Li Chengzhi, let's leave the past behind. We... can never go back to how things were." His gaze dimmed as he fell silent for a long moment before speaking again.
" Qingwan, I want to know... if you've always been thinking about that person." Li Chengzhi struggled to articulate each word. I lowered my head, unable to meet his eyes.
"Even if it was a mistake for us to be together at first, I believe that every day we spent together afterward and every smile you gave me was genuine. I truly hope we can start over..."
"I can't help but ask, 'Li Chengzhi, why do you have to do this? You are a noble prince of the court; what kind of beauty do you not have?'"
"But none of them are you, Wen Qingwan!" he shouted in pain.
I was taken aback by his words.
Li Chengzhi knelt down partially, " Qingwan, I hope you can give me a chance to take care of you, even if you don't love me."
My heart trembled at his plea; in his eyes, I saw the familiar tenderness.
Memories surged back like a tidal wave.
After a long silence, I slowly spoke, "Even if I don't love you?"
Li Chengzhi firmly replied, "Even if... you don't love me."
Unable to hold back any longer, I crouched down and embraced him. Tears fell silently, soaking into his clothing and leaving dark stains behind.
"Qing... Wan?"
His voice trembled slightly, as if he could hardly believe this sudden joy.
"Do you know?" I whispered, my voice so faint it was almost inaudible.
"I have been running away—running away from our past, running away from my feelings." My voice choked with emotion, each word felt like it was squeezed from my throat.
"Although I agreed to marry you because your face resembles that of an old acquaintance, I am not made of wood; who can be heartless?"
I lifted my head and looked at him through tear-filled eyes.
"I thought I could deceive myself, but I was wrong. In the end, I have fallen in love with you."
Li Chengzhi's breath caught slightly as if struck by this sudden happiness. His face shifted from shock to uncontainable joy.
His hand gently stroked my hair as if handling a precious treasure, careful and tender.
" Qingwan!"
The corners of his mouth lifted slightly, revealing a radiant smile.
We held each other tightly, feeling each other's warmth and heartbeat.
All that had happened before no longer mattered.
What mattered was that we were together now and would be together in the future.
Even if the beginning was not perfect, as long as we had each other, we could walk this path together.
