No matter if the young lady is Zheng Mengni or Zheng San or Zheng Si, whoever is the daughter of the Zheng Family, he must marry her.
He didn't think too much about it; he liked Zheng Mengni, and he had liked her for a very long time—much longer than anyone could imagine. Wei Jingxi wanted to marry Zheng Mengni; for him, the union was merely a means to an end.
That was just his perspective. I have taken over someone else's life.
Zheng Mengni certainly did not feel this was her fault. Everyone has their own fate, and it was the whims of destiny that led to all of this. She didn’t need to drown in guilt over something that wasn’t her doing. She said these things simply because she didn’t want to settle down with a marriage contract so soon.
Her life could not be easily tied to a man who showed no ambition.
She truly disliked Wei Jingxi’s capricious nature; right now, his affection felt like nothing more than a fleeting novelty. Once that novelty wore off, marrying such a scoundrel would only trap her in a cage.
If she was determined to marry, she would have to train Wei Jingxi beforehand. If he wasn’t trained properly, there would be no way she could marry him.
She believed she could bring more benefits to the Zheng Family than just through a marriage alliance. At her age, what was there that she couldn’t dare to think or do?
Seeing Zheng Mengni with her head down and silent, Wei Jingxi felt an unprecedented sense of guilt wash over him. Initially, he had threatened her with a paternity test simply hoping she would look at him more often. They were supposed to be engaged, yet their relationship felt less intimate than that of strangers. Jealousy drove him mad, and in a moment of impulse, he made the wrong choice.
Wei Jingxi hadn’t expected Zheng Mengni to be so frightened and concerned about this matter.
He didn’t regret it; without taking such actions, he feared they wouldn’t even exchange a few words.
“I’ve told you many times not to be afraid; getting engaged early will only bring you benefits, not drawbacks.” Yes, the true daughter of the Zheng Family might very well be lost somewhere out there; perhaps one day she would be found by sheer luck. Would you then return everything you possess—everything that originally belonged to her? You wouldn’t want to return it, but the Zheng Family would force you to! Blood ties are stronger than you can imagine, especially in families like ours; how could we possibly leave our shares to someone unrelated?
Wei Jingxi grasped her icy hand, which felt shockingly cold. His heart ached for her as he pressed it against his chest to warm her up.
Wei Jingxi knew his words were cruel, but he continued slowly: “Zheng Yicheng’s position today wasn’t easy to achieve; his heart is ten thousand times colder than what you feel. The bond of family is fleeting; money may be given as charity, but feelings cannot.”
Zheng Mengni’s eyes sparkled brightly, unwavering and resolute.
She replied, “I know that taking what doesn’t belong to me means it should be returned to its rightful owner. Having enjoyed such a luxurious life for so long, I should return everything when that girl comes back—money, power, and everything that belongs to her.”
Her words were pointed; how could Wei Jingxi not understand?
Those who belonged to her did not include me.
“I will marry you; it has nothing to do with an alliance.”
As he spoke, he wrapped his arm around Zheng Mengni's neck, pressing her down slightly, and lifted his head to gently nibble on her lips. Their breaths intertwined, while his other hand held hers tightly.
Her lips, soft as water, drew Wei Jingxi into a whirlpool from which she could not escape. The fragrance in the air grew more intense, making Wei Jingxi feel a tingling sensation all over.
