It was her first time at this welfare institution, and feeling out of place, she hesitated to ask about Xia Shu, fearing it might raise suspicion. Instead, she decided to wait until the physical examination to find out more.
Zheng Mengni returned to Wang Xia, who had arranged a room for her, but within half an hour, she stepped back outside.
She approached Wang Xia and asked, "Excuse me, where can I take a shower?"
Wang Xia replied, "It's been raining these past few days, and there's no hot water. How about I boil some water for you? You can make do with a towel to clean yourself."
Zheng Mengni forced a smile and said, "It's fine; I can manage on my own."
Back in her room, Zheng Mengni was utterly dismayed. The basin for washing was too small—there was only one. Covered in mud and rain, she was determined not to get into bed without showering.
Gritting her teeth, Zheng Mengni stripped off her clothes and squeezed into the cramped bathroom. Wang Xia hadn't lied; after running the water for quite some time, it still felt icy cold.
The bathroom had a foul odor that made her want to leave as soon as possible.
Standing under the showerhead, she braced herself as the frigid water cascaded down. Instantly, goosebumps erupted all over her arms.
Taking a shower turned out to be an excruciating ordeal.
After what felt like an eternity of lingering in there, Zheng Mengni finally turned off the water, wrapped herself in a towel, and dashed to the bed like a quail burying itself under the covers.
She felt both cold and tired. The warmth of the bed enveloped her, and before long, she fell asleep.
Outside, the rain poured heavily, accompanied by howling winds. A faint knocking at the door seemed insignificant amidst the chaos.
Tan Yan knocked for quite some time without anyone answering.
Zheng Mengni never picked up her phone.
He hung up and stuffed his phone back into his pocket before pushing the door open.
The room was small; he could see a little mound on the bed at a glance.
Tan Yan paused at the doorway and tentatively called out Zheng Mengni's name, but there was no response.
He stepped lightly, standing quietly by the bed. Zheng Mengni was curled up under the covers, resembling a round, plump, white bun. Tan Yan reached out and gently patted the blanket.
The snowball remained completely still. Tan Yan carefully pulled back the covers, revealing a dazzling expanse of white. His breath caught in his throat, and his eyes shimmered with surprise; he hadn’t expected to find Zheng Mengni lying there without any clothes.
Exposed to the air, her delicate back glowed with a pale radiance. Her long black hair spread out like luxurious silk, damp and cascading. From her exquisite butterfly bones to her graceful waistline, she appeared as if drawn with a single fluid stroke.
Tan Yan squinted slightly, his gaze fixated for a long time without moving away. She was asleep. Even when he lifted the blanket, she showed no reaction. The bath towel wrapped around her had slipped down at some point, barely covering her gently rising and falling curves.
Tan Yan's gaze heated up along with his blood. The warmth spread from his feet upward, a tingling sensation enveloping his entire body. He didn’t understand love; all he wanted was to draw Zheng Mengni closer to him and keep her by his side forever.
He wanted to hear her sing, to listen to her talk. To share meals with her, to go shopping together. Beyond that, he had no other thoughts. In this moment, physical desire outweighed any spiritual longing.
He suddenly realized that being together could also bring romance and passion. Leaning down, Tan Yan closed his eyes and kissed her softly at the curve of her waist. His eyelashes fluttered as they brushed against her delicate skin.
Delicate, soft, exuding an intoxicating fragrance.
