Sun Yao gently placed her hand on her shoulder. "Mom will go with you."
Zheng Mengni looked at the wealthy ladies behind Sun Yao, who were exchanging glances, and smiled as she waved her hand. "Aunties are still waiting for you. I can go by myself, besides, didn't my brother give me his coat?"
Sun Yao, still worried, reminded her, "Just be careful. The restroom is straight ahead, then take a left at the end."
The wedding was bustling with excitement, but the restroom felt particularly quiet, filled only with the sound of running water. Zheng Mengni lifted her skirt to reveal her slender, pale legs as she bent down to carefully rub at the stains on her dress.
It was getting worse instead of better; a large patch of light pink stood out against the watery fabric. Zheng Mengni focused intently, the sound of water masking the soft footsteps approaching from behind her. A breeze swept under her skirt as someone crouched down behind her.
Just as she was about to turn her head, someone grabbed her calf. The palm was warm, radiating a heat that felt almost like it could burn her.
Zheng Mengni looked down to see Wei Jingxi crouching behind her, intently using his fingertip to wipe the skin on her leg. The places he touched were marked by his warmth.
Wei Jingxi's movements were gentle, as if he feared she might sense the care hidden beneath his actions. "There, all clean now." It turned out that when the wine glass had tipped over, some of the wine had splashed onto her leg.
He straightened up slowly after tidying her fallen skirt, his tall figure casting a shadow over Zheng Mengni in front of the sink. They exchanged a silent gaze before Wei Jingxi broke the quiet atmosphere.
"Is your cold better now?"
"Yes."
"Did your fever break?"
"It broke early."
The golden lights dazzled, reflecting off his pristine white suit, making it hard to keep one's eyes open.
Zheng Mengni hung her head and said softly, "I should go."
Wei Jingxi was standing very close, forcing her to brush past his chest, arms, and thighs just to escape.
In that fleeting moment as they brushed against each other, Wei Jingxi grasped her wrist.
"Why are you so cold?"
Zheng Mengni still held onto Zheng Zeqi's clothes in her arms, but he resolutely took off his outer coat and draped it over her shoulders, wrapping her tightly in the warmth of his garment.
"I really have to go."
Wei Jingxi raised an eyebrow. "You're avoiding me."
"Yes."
"It seems you understand that our marriage is destined to be annulled."
"Yes."
Zheng Mengni continued, "Since it's already a predetermined outcome, there's no one to blame. Perhaps we really don't have fate together."
As she spoke, she instinctively clutched the diamond ring hanging from her neck.
"It should be returned."
Wei Jingxi smiled and said, "No, we never had any fate at all; all of it came from my insistence."
Zheng Mengni slowly lifted her eyelids, her luminous eyes flashing with a hint of astonishment.
"I don't believe that destiny can separate us; the only thing that can truly tear us apart is ourselves," Wei Jingxi declared, finally tearing away the facade of silence. "You must find it absurd too, right? This marriage has nothing to do with them; why should their words hold any weight?"
Zheng Mengni's expression froze as she listened to Wei Jingxi.
"They treat marriage as a bargaining chip and use children as a means of trade! Being born into a wealthy family may seem glorious, but who knows how much filth lies beneath?"
He chuckled softly. "If you wish, I can take you away from these nauseating schemes."
Zheng Mengni blinked gently and lowered her gaze to the hand that held hers.
In an almost pleading tone, Wei Jingxi leaned closer and whispered beside her, "Shall we go, Ni Ni?"
