"Leave?" Zheng Mengni looked at him in disbelief.
She racked her brain trying to find a way to stay, wondering how Wei Jingxi could even think of taking her away. It seemed absurd to her.
Her gaze shifted to Qing Qian. "I'm sorry, I can't leave with you."
The overhead lights were too bright, and Wei Jingxi helplessly closed his eyes for a moment. "You've chosen to accept the life arranged by Zheng Yicheng, haven't you?"
He called her name softly.
In the past, whenever Zheng Mengni called out Wei Jingxi's full name, he would be overjoyed. He believed it was a sign of her possessiveness over him—her affection meant she wanted to speak of him entirely, hence the use of his name.
But at this moment, he couldn't feel joy; instead, he felt a sense of unease and wished she would stop speaking.
Zheng Mengni was unaware of his inexplicable thoughts and continued to express her own feelings. Her voice was gentle, but the words that flowed from her rosy lips sent chills down his spine.
"Is it possible that you are also the life my father arranged for me? Before our families decided on this union, you were just a stranger to me. Perhaps you've forgotten something: our real connection didn't come from the marriage arrangement but from your threats—stalking and surveillance, using underhanded tactics to exploit my weaknesses."
"When you treated me well, I won't deny it. I am grateful for your kindness; I only hoped for a smooth union."
"Now that the marriage is on shaky ground, I think you understand better than I do why."
As she spoke, a hint of grievance appeared on her face. "Wei Jingxi, this isn't my fault, nor is it yours."
With tears in her eyes, she grasped Wei Jingxi's hand and comforted him softly. "Accept your fate."
"Accept what fate?"
She regarded her fate as forever bright and splendid, filled with happiness. Zheng Mengni gazed at him gently, yet in her heart, she thought: Wei Jingxi, you can’t just throw everything away and selfishly drag me down with you.
She desired wealth and honor, and she wanted to be showered with love. She did not want to follow the impulsive and reckless Wei Jingxi into an unknown life.
Zheng Mengni looked at Wei Jingxi's increasingly pale face with pity, giving him one last tender embrace. Silly Wei Jingxi. Only a fool would give up the life that everyone dreams of for a fleeting passion.
She released him from her embrace, looking at him earnestly before taking off his jacket and placing it on the sink, leaving without looking back.
Just a few steps away, she heard Wei Jingxi’s hoarse voice behind her. "I regret it."
Zheng Mengni truly could not understand how such deep feelings could develop in such a short time for Wei Jingxi. It was merely a passing novelty that made him mistakenly believe he loved her deeply.
Sighing, she thought she was already dramatic enough; if she found someone even more dramatic than herself, how would they manage their lives together?
From her vantage point as an observer, she wanted to hear how much bitterness Wei Jingxi could express. Wei Jingxi leaned weakly against the sink, his body drained of strength, supporting himself with his hands.
He was actually more suited to lighter clothing, which would have concealed some of the gloom and harshness lurking in his eyes.
Wei Jingxi stared at the tips of Zheng Mengni's shoes, his voice ethereal: "What price must I pay?"
Zheng Mengni didn’t blink; in her heart, she silently thought that she had already paid enough. However, she couldn’t give Wei Jingxi the love he desired right now.
As she turned to leave, she heard Wei Jingxi continue: "What cost must I bear to exchange for the most beautiful beginning for us?"
He forced a faint smile, his voice hoarse: "I know you don’t want to leave because you blame me for uncovering truths you didn’t want to face, and I shamelessly claimed I wanted to protect you."
The weak tones he managed to produce were barely audible: "Protect? I can’t even protect our marriage."
Zheng Mengni took a deep breath, clenching her hand into a fist at her side.
Once, she had hated him for telling her things she didn’t want to know. Now, however, she felt grateful—grateful that he had discovered it in time. It gave her enough time to prepare thoroughly to guard what she wished to protect.
