I, we
Both of them held her secrets, and to be honest, Zheng Mengni didn’t trust either of them.
Rather than seeking their help, she preferred to spend time making her mother happy.
Tan Yan, although the object of her father's flattery, had become a cautionary tale for Zheng Mengni after Wei Jingxi's experience; she didn’t want to continue being a tool without freedom.
After weighing her options, she chose to remain silent, offering an apologetic yet troubled smile in an attempt to soothe Wei Jingxi's restless heart.
Wei Jingxi couldn’t understand what unspeakable troubles she had, why she couldn’t show him even a hint of favoritism in front of others.
Was it so hard to speak the truth? A hand is just a hand; if it’s not there, it’s not there. The way you try to please both sides is truly ridiculous.
Wei Jingxi scoffed dismissively: "Zheng Mengni, haven’t I told you? If you try to have it all, in the end, you will lose everything!"
Zheng Mengni felt somewhat wronged and didn’t want to engage with him further.
Tan Yan interjected: "Do you think she cares about losing you, Wei Jingxi? It’s laughable how much you overestimate your own importance. But I must thank you for stepping back; no matter what, she will never lose me."
Wei Jingxi stepped forward, curling his lips into a mocking and sarcastic expression: "Hasn’t anyone ever told you that you’re very arrogant? Do you really think your situation is better than mine? You’ll never lose me? You dare make such a ridiculous guarantee! I’d like to see how you can force Tan Zheng to accept this absurd marriage."
Tan Yan maintained a calm and composed demeanor, showing no signs of weakness.
He avoided answering directly and casually provoked: "Absurd? I can’t believe that the marriage I desire so much can be described with such a despicable term by you. At least you two had some feelings for each other; do you really think it’s absurd?"
A chilling coldness seeped into Wei Jingxi's eyes: "Are you crazy? What nonsense are you spouting!"
Zheng Mengni couldn’t listen any longer.
Wei Jingxi was truly foolish; his words were no match for Tan Yan’s eloquence. He stubbornly tried to argue with someone who was clearly beyond his league, foolishly stepping into the trap set by others.
She felt that staying here was a waste of time and softly interrupted: "Um, I have something to attend to; I’ll be leaving now."
Wei Jingxi caught up and grabbed her hand, looking utterly wronged as he asked: "He said you don’t care about me; I don’t believe it. Xiao Ni, you actually like me, right?"
Zheng Mengni paused briefly: "I—"
Tan Yan noticed the annoying hand and directly pulled Zheng Mengni behind him, answering this trivial question for her.
"No, she doesn’t. You’re overthinking it; can’t you be a little more clear-headed? You have no talent for humor; don’t try to make people laugh here."
Wei Jingxi wished he could get rid of this annoying obstacle.
"Have you asked him?"
In what capacity did he respond on behalf of Xiao Ni?
Wei Jingxi gritted his teeth, his expression dark: "Get lost, no one is talking to you."
Zheng Mengni gently pushed Tan Yan aside and walked up to Wei Jingxi, handing him the diamond ring that had yet to be returned.
"Let me say a few words, is that alright?"
Wei Jingxi did not take it. He desperately wanted Zheng Mengni to be quiet, fearing she would say nothing he wanted to hear.
"Our relationship is merely a marriage alliance. Now that our fathers have decided to cancel the alliance, we should have no further ties. But since we met, there’s a connection. If you’re willing, we can still be friends."
Tan Yan interjected, "Xiao Ni, you already have enough friends. There's no need to force yourself to make another meaningless friendship just for his feelings."
Wei Jingxi fixed his gaze on the delicate hand held out before him. He had held it many times before and never once thought of letting go.
"Friends?" Wei Jingxi scoffed in response.
Zheng Mengni, growing impatient waiting for him to take it, simply draped the chain around his neck herself.
"Yes, as long as you’re willing." She ignored Tan Yan’s suggestion.
Wei Jingxi was on the verge of breaking down, nearly exploding: "Either lovers or strangers! Our relationship can only fall into one of those two categories."
Without hesitation, Zheng Mengni replied, "Strangers then."
