Zheng Mengni stood before him, first politely thanking Tan Yan for extending a helping hand during her moment of embarrassment, and she handed him a heartfelt card.
Then, the softness on her face began to wane, gradually replaced by an uncontrollable hint of indifference in her eyes.
"Besides thank you, I also want to say," she paused slightly, as if steeling herself, "when we were in Heqing Town, you said you liked me."
Tan Yan was not foolish; he would not be naive enough to think that Zheng Mengni intended to reciprocate his feelings under such circumstances. With a growing suspicion in his heart, he maintained his calm demeanor.
He listened patiently as Zheng Mengni continued, "You said you liked me because I sing well."
Tan Yan nodded subtly, his expression inscrutable.
Seeing that he did not deny it, Zheng Mengni curved her lips slightly: "Actually, the songs posted online are not sung by me. I think your affection has been misplaced. If you need, I can give you the contact information for that girl. It's always been her singing for me."
Zheng Mengni mustered the courage to voice what she had kept hidden in her heart; if one looked closely, they could see her calves trembling slightly.
Finally, she could bravely reveal these uncomfortable truths to Tan Yan. She simply did not want to become entangled with this man who exuded an air of danger both inside and out.
Zheng Mengni's intuition told her that it was better not to start anything at all; once she did with Tan Yan, it would likely be even more complicated than with Wei Jingxi. After all, he already knew her biggest secret; one more wouldn’t matter.
Tan Yan paused for a moment before chuckling softly.
"Xiao Ni," he said with a teasing tone, "you really have a way of coming up with excuses to reject my confession."
He added, "You've put in quite the effort."
Tan Yan's demeanor remained light and unperturbed, showing no signs of shock or bewilderment as he gently praised Zheng Mengni for crafting such a clever lie.
Zheng Mengni's smile faltered: "What I said is true."
"What does it matter if it's true or false?"
"My point is, the person you like shouldn't be me."
Tan Yan narrowed his eyes slightly, a sly smile appearing on his face.
He deliberately asked, "Then who should it be?"
Zheng Mengni sighed in relief and opened her phone's contact list, her delicate fingers scrolling for a while before finally tapping on a name to show Tan Yan.
Her eyes were clear as she said, "It should be her. You can note down her phone number."
Tan Yan felt a tightness in his chest.
For the first time, he lacked the confidence to ask, "Do you really want me to find someone else?"
Zheng Mengni replied softly, "I just want to correct this misunderstanding."
Tan Yan felt even more frustrated.
But looking at Zheng Mengni's innocent and carefree expression, he couldn't bring himself to tease her any longer.
He sighed lightly, gazing at her intently.
"I'm just joking with you; I’ve actually known all along."
"You... you knew."
Tan Yan nodded. "Yeah, maybe I'm just sensitive to your voice. It's easy for me to recognize it."
He thought to himself: Unlike you, who has spoken so many times and still can't recognize someone when they send a voice message.
Zheng Mengni instinctively wanted to step back. The feeling that she couldn't hide anything from Tan Yan made her feel exposed in front of him.
Yet she also liked to lie.
No, being with someone like a human lie detector would drive her crazy.

Tan Yan's lips curled into a slight smile, his warm eyes glimmering in the natural light.
He said, "I can distinguish your voice. Have you forgotten what I once said?"

Zheng Mengni shook her head desperately. "I'm sorry, I don't remember."
Tan Yan spoke softly, "If you can't accept my feelings right now, that's okay. I can wait for you. In a relationship, the one pursuing always has to show sincerity to make it meaningful."
Zheng Mengni's face was filled with resistance. "That's not what I mean. I probably don't have any intention of starting something with you. This isn't the time for romance; I need to focus on my studies. I have to go."
As she spoke, she kept stepping back.
Tan Yan silently closed his mouth. He didn't want to pressure her or scare her. Moreover, walking backward was dangerous, and he didn't want her to get hurt because of him.
It wasn't until Zheng Mengni's figure completely faded from view that the warmth on Tan Yan's face vanished without a trace, replaced by overwhelming darkness and agitation.
After a long while, he gradually calmed down, slowly releasing the fist at his side that had turned white from being clenched.

He wasn't in a hurry.
Wei Jingxi posed no threat; he only needed to guard himself closely, standing outside Zheng Mengni's emotional walls.
