The Opening Ceremony was a special recognition event solely for Tan Yan. His charitable deeds had made headlines in the financial news a week prior, earning him widespread acclaim from the public.
Tan Yan's grandfather was preparing to run for a promotion, and his grandson's honorable actions were undoubtedly a feather in the cap, making many envious of the Tan Family for having such an outstanding young member who had already made his mark in society.
Dressed in an elegant black suit, Tan Yan's smooth black hair was meticulously styled. He stood tall and warm, his smile as gentle as the spring sun.
"Are you feeling better?" Zheng Mengni asked with a soft smile.
"I'm doing well," she replied, seemingly casual. "But the notice said there would be an urgent meeting in the auditorium. It doesn't seem very urgent to me since no one else has shown up."
Zheng Mengni's attitude had improved significantly compared to before, and Tan Yan looked pleased as he pressed his lips together.
After a moment of contemplation, he said, "It's not a meeting; I just wanted to see you."
Zheng Mengni couldn't help but laugh at his unexpected remark. "You wanted to see me? That's quite strange. But if you had said so earlier, I might have come. Your tendency to deceive is really annoying."
"Deceiving you? Not at all!" Tan Yan replied nonchalantly. "It doesn't matter; the process isn't important. I'm just happy that you're here."
"But I'm not happy," she countered, tilting her head slightly back and leaning against her chair, her gaze lazy yet lacking elegance.
"Tan Yan, I'm not as idle as you are. Every moment of mine is already planned out. They need to be spent where they matter, not wasted on these boring things with you."
Tan Yan had grown accustomed to Zheng Mengni's disdain and remained unfazed, his smile still warm and inviting.
"You can tell me what you find meaningful, and I'll join you," he offered.
Zheng Mengni raised her delicate finger to her chin, genuinely pondering for a moment. Suddenly, her eyes lit up as she tilted her face toward Tan Yan and softly said, "Actually, there is something I find quite meaningful. Would you like to hear about it?"
"Go ahead," he encouraged.
With a gentle expression in her eyes, Zheng Mengni replied, "I rushed out this morning and forgot to have breakfast. I'm really hungry now. Would you be willing to go to Yun Ji and buy me some breakfast?"
"Sure." Tan Yan took out his phone and made a call, handing it to Zheng Mengni. "Tell my assistant what you want and if there’s anything you can't eat. He'll drive over and get it for you."
Zheng Mengni shook her head and blinked her eyes, speaking in a playful tone, "But I asked you to do it! You just casually handed my task over to someone else. Do you think what I say is unimportant, so it doesn’t matter how you treat it?"
The nearest place to the school, Yun Ji, was still half an hour away by car. With an hour needed for the round trip, the Opening Ceremony had already begun, and Tan Yan, as the host, certainly shouldn’t be absent without notice.
After a moment of consideration, Tan Yan replied, "Alright, I’ll go."
He could see that Zheng Mengni was deliberately putting him in a difficult position, but what could he do? The fact that she still wanted to challenge him was a good sign. It indicated that in her heart, he was not entirely insignificant.
Tan Yan instructed his assistant to drive him over. On the way to buy breakfast, he delegated his responsibilities as host to a capable officer in the student council.
Zheng Mengni had only mentioned it casually; she didn’t expect Tan Yan to actually go. But that was fine. When he returned midway and felt the unusual gazes from everyone, his expression would surely be quite entertaining.
There were still ten minutes until the Opening Ceremony officially started, yet students were already arriving in groups at the auditorium. Members of the student council gathered along the way, discussing among themselves.
"How strange! If the message was sent incorrectly, why not just notify everyone in the group? The president even sent private messages one by one."
"What do you know? Someone as considerate as him must be worried that some fools didn’t see the group message. He probably wanted to make sure no one wasted their trip by sending personal reminders."
"By the way, did you see the news from a few days ago? He truly lives up to being president. If only I could be half as outstanding as he is."
Zheng Mengni sat behind them, her head lowered as she played with her phone, a faint smile curling at the corners of her lips.
Just then, Wei Jingxi arrived late and strode towards Zheng Mengni with great enthusiasm. In his eagerness, he wasn’t paying attention to where he was going and nearly tripped on a step.
Fortunately, Wei Jingxi managed to steady himself by gripping the back of a chair. However, the commotion drew everyone's attention toward him.
Some people are just remarkable; when he appeared, he unintentionally drew everyone’s gaze. His entrance was rather ostentatious.
Zheng Mengni tilted her head and glanced at the hand still resting on the back of her chair.
"Haha."
She used to think that the kind of clumsy falls seen in dramas only happened to female characters in idol shows.
"What's wrong with you, Wei Jingxi?" Zheng Mengni asked, genuinely concerned and not joking at all.
Wei Jingxi sat next to Zheng Mengni with a dark expression, his pitch-black pupils suppressing a wave of intense emotions.
He missed her so much. It was driving him crazy! How serious was her injury?
For the past two months, Tan Yan had been blocking him, Wei Nanxuan had been keeping him confined, and Guan Su Lin had been watching over him. He knew nothing about Zheng Mengni's situation, and he was desperate to know if she was doing okay lately.
But when he finally sat next to her, all the rehearsed words he had prepared condensed into a simple question: "Have you eaten?"
Zheng Mengni glanced at him and smiled brightly. "Of course I have!"
She had gotten into a good routine. She ate on time and slept on time every day. At this hour, she had definitely already had breakfast.
As soon as she finished speaking, Wei Jingxi felt a bit downcast; it had been such a long time since they had shared a meal together.
After enjoying the amusing expression on Wei Jingxi's face for a moment, Zheng Mengni slowly added, "But I haven't had lunch yet, and I don't want to go to the cafeteria."
"Huh?" Wei Jingxi clearly couldn't believe what he was hearing. Without any hesitation, he asked, "Shall we go together, Xiao Ni?"
"Choose whichever restaurant you like; I'm fine with anything."
Wei Jingxi felt nervous around her; he had never met anyone who could flake out more than Zheng Mengni. He quickly added, "You can't back out."
"Am I that kind of person?" Zheng Mengni gazed at him sincerely, her clear eyes holding a hint of gentle affection.
Wei Jingxi smiled slightly. "No, you're not."
Zheng Mengni was in a good mood lately, and she noticed that Wei Jingxi had become much more obedient. He no longer acted out of place or disregarded others' feelings like before. Besides, she still needed Wei Laoshi to continue handling some matters for her.
Although she no longer sings off-key, without a patient and good teacher to guide her, it is unlikely that she will make rapid progress.
